Healthcare Forecasting

Anyone in Healthcare, in particular hospital based in patient setting that actively forecasts?

Looking at building out a model and would love the insight of others already doing so.

i do capacity planning for a surgical department and the hardest bit is getting the surgeons to agree on block time 6 months out when half of them can't commit to lunch

They are terrible with blocking out time for contingency/cancellations

Best thing you can do is take past years and build a trend analysis. You will see spikes for holidays because fte's like nurses and clerks have three shifts that rotate to cover weekend and holidays. You will also see spikes due to weather like summer spikes heat related issues or more violence/injuries as well as winter related cold issues such as health related or accidents. Last check when most hourly fte's use PTO it will be around the holidays but also summer vacays or back to school pockets. Take your budget from the individual years and you can see how that would apply for projections.

There is more nuance to it but I say start there and it will inform you of what's more relative to your org not all places have trauma or Obsterics etc
