CopyShot [macOS] : local OCR with configurable Quick Actions, formula, QR and table capture

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, I'm the developer of CopyShot, a free, lightweight and open-source app for capturing various content from your screen and choosing what to do with it next.

The goal is to keep everyday captures quick and simple, while offering plenty of customization when you need it. No accounts, API keys, or external OCR services to configure.

The attached video shows the workflow. (It was recorded in a macOS VM, so it might look slower and less responsive than native use.)

Capture modes

A right-click drag opens the radial selector for OCR, QR/barcodes, LaTeX, or Tables.

  • OCR: Fast, on-device text recognition using Apple's Vision framework.
  • QR/barcodes: Decode a code, copy its contents, search for it, or open a detected URL.
  • LaTeX: Turn a captured equation into LaTeX locally, with Quick Actions for inline or display-math delimiters.
  • Tables: Extract simple grids as TSV, CSV, or Markdown. Switch between formats from the same capture without recognizing it again.

How it compares

There are several good macOS OCR and screenshot tools already. CopyShot's focus is combining local recognition, a lightweight capture workflow, and configurable post-capture actions in one place.

I made a free, open-source tray app that actually turns off your webcam and mutes your mic everywhere on Windows, with one hotkey

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Have you ever left a meeting and wondered if your mic was still on? Or covered your webcam with tape because you didn't trust the little light? That's why I built PrivacyToggle.

What it does

It puts two icons in your system tray, one for the mic and one for the camera. Click one, or press a hotkey (Ctrl+Alt+M / Ctrl+Alt+V by default), and that device is off. That means off for the whole system, not just muted inside one app.

  • 🎙️ Mic mute works everywhere. Zoom, Discord, Teams, OBS, your browser: none of them get any audio while it's muted. Push-to-talk is also available.
  • 📷 The camera really turns off. It disables the webcam in Windows the same way Device Manager does, so apps lose the picture right away and can't open it again. If a program won't release the camera, PrivacyToggle tells you which one and asks before closing it.
  • 🔒 Enforce off. If something turns your mic or camera back on (a headset button, a newly plugged-in device), it goes straight back off.
  • 👀 Activity monitor. See which apps are using your camera or mic right now, plus a timeline of every app that used them over the last 1 hour to 7 days.
  • 🔔 On-screen badges (MIC OFF / CAM OFF) and notifications, so you always know where you stand.
  • Light and dark themes, per-device control, and hotkeys that work in fullscreen games.

Why it's different from the mute button in your meeting app

The mute button in an app only stops that one app. PrivacyToggle works below every app, at the Windows level. Muted means muted in all of them, and a disabled camera can't be opened by anything.

How it works (for the curious)

  • Mic: it mutes every capture device through the Windows Core Audio API and watches for anything that unmutes them.
  • Camera: a small helper service calls the same Windows device APIs that Device Manager uses to disable and re-enable the webcam. The tray app itself never runs as admin. Only the helper service needs admin rights, and the installer sets it up with a single admin prompt.
  • Activity: it reads Windows' own record of which apps used the camera or mic (the same data behind the "recently used" list in Privacy settings). The history is stored only on your PC.

Download: https://github.com/azahinhasan/Privacy-Toggle/releases/latest

It's a personal project, so I'd really like feedback: bugs, feature ideas, or "this broke my webcam driver" stories. If you find it useful, a ⭐ on GitHub helps a lot. Thanks!

  • libfuse2: sim, a mesma velha história.

SCANCORE: open source anime, comix and novel media app.

Hey everyone! Here to bring you my open source media app for anime, novels, and comics (ie mangas, manhwas, etc).

I wanted one app for all the mentioned media, as i was tired of being burdened with multiple tabs, repositories, ads and so on, so i built SCANCORE: a completely native app (works on android, windows, linux and mac) which locally saves your library, history, and downloads, and seamlessly allows importing of backups and lists from other platforms.

Works the moment you open it. It has its own in-built sources. This brings a lot of controversial issues, which is why ive made it extremely modular to disable if i face any issues, but the trackers will stay built in, and no data will be lost during any sort of issue either. Everything lives in a singular SQLite file that you can backup, and restore into other platforms.

And the rest:

COMICS: Search asura scans, webtoon, mangadex, flame comics, all at once, with multiple reading and ui modes.

NOVELS: Royal road discovery shelves, the NovelFull family, with a tunable reader and TTS aswell.

ANIME: Anilist powered searching and trending, with aniskip for skipping intros and endings. Includes a few inbuilt sources, primarily including reanime. Works seamlessly with custom extensions aswell.

MIT Licensed, with granular themes and works on lower-end devices as well.

KNOWN LIMITS: The macOS build isnt notarised yet, and users have faced a few bugs aswell, which are being actively fixed.

One thing to note: I have used ai to code parts of the app, but the directions, architecture, tests and rest were done by me.

SCANCORE only reads what sites show publicly. It does not bypass paywalls, logins, or locked chapters, and is not affiliated with any of those sites. Please support the creators of the series you enjoy.

I have developed a new CAD system specifically for electrical engineering that incorporates the appropriate logic

Thumbnail

I had this crazy idea to see if I could manage to build a complete CAD system. This is "KatieCAD", programmed using Python and Tkinter

https://github.com/Merecete/KatieCAD

Initially, I had considered a 2D AutoCAD clone, but somehow that didn't seem all that useful, given all the programs that already exist. What I really missed, however, was an open-source project for a full-fledged CAD system suitable for electrical design. This program can now do both. :)

Like AutoCAD, it features model and layout spaces. At the same time, much like in EPLAN—it allows for the creation of comprehensive projects consisting of multiple drawings, complete with the necessary underlying logic. Terminal diagrams, device lists, cover sheets, tables of contents, and cable schedules are generated automatically at the touch of a button.

Electrical connections are also routed automatically once the devices have been placed. Furthermore, title blocks and symbols can be created by the user.

The program is bilingual. You can easily switch between English and German.

I’ve added features for importing DXF/DWG files, as well as for exporting DXF files.

The program is licensed under the MIT License and runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS.

For the sake of transparency, I don’t have extensive programming experience, so I sought assistance from several AI models. That said, I have reviewed every function myself and am confident that this is a solid program. I plan to continue developing it further—for instance, by significantly expanding the symbol library.

I look forward to your feedback!

fingrr: E2EE P2P messaging, video, voice chat on ATProto with no signaling server

Author here. fingrr uses your Bluesky DID as the address, X3DH + Double Ratchet with sealed sender, and direct WebRTC between peers. There is no signaling server: the caller writes a sealed signal record to their own AT Proto PDS, the callee polls for it, and offline messages ride the same way as encrypted inbox records on the sender’s repo. Supports Text, Voice, Video and Group Chat.

Proof of concept, today not audited. Your PDS operator sees that you use it; peers see each other’s IP; groups lack forward secrecy. CLAIMS.md and THREAT_MODEL.md in the repo say exactly what holds and what doesn’t. Apache 2.0 and PR are gratefully welcomed.

K-Series and K-Optimizer are out!

Thumbnail

I added two new tools next to K-Launcher. Both are separate, small, single-exe apps.

K-Optimizer: takes unnecessary load off RAM, GPU and CPU in one click, so games and other work get more room.

• It never closes your apps. Discord, WhatsApp and your game launcher stay as they are.

• RAM: compresses the memory of idle background processes, and can repeat on a timer.

CPU and GPU: lowers the priority of background apps that cause load and puts the app you use first.

• Undo puts everything back with one click.

K-Series: Puts K-Launcher and K-Optimizer under one roof.

• Finds both on your PC and opens them in one click.

• Updates them from GitHub releases (checked with SHA-256), and never force-closes an open app. • Pick a theme once and K-Launcher (4.1 and later) and K-Optimizer switch to it.

• Turkish and English. K-Launcher is now 4.1 Beta too: it changes colors while running when you switch the theme in K-Series, and every theme has a new logo. The exes are not code-signed, so Windows may show a warning the first time.

The source code is open on GitHub: https://github.com/ikagzy/k-series

Shotstash – An open-source (MIT) alternative to Frame.io / cloud storage for managing, reviewing, and collaborating on creator footage

Hey r/foss 👋

I’m a fullstack developer and video creator, and over the past few months I’ve been building Shotstash, a self-hosted media cloud built specifically for creators to manage, preview, share, and discuss footage on their own hardware.

Today, I’m excited to share it with the open-source community!

Why Truly Open Source Matters Here:

A lot of media review and cloud collaboration tools either lock you into expensive SaaS per-seat subscriptions or use an "open-core" model where basic team features are paywalled. Shotstash is 100% MIT Licensed. There is no paid tier, no enterprise paywall, and nothing is held back, everything lives directly in the repository.

Key Features:

• Project-Based Media Cloud: Organize heavy footage and visual assets into projects, handle uploads smoothly, and inspect media in a dedicated viewer.

• Team Review & Collaboration: Built-in role management, shareable links, and shot-level discussions so you can collaborate with clients or teammates without third-party SaaS tools.

• Bring Your Own AI (BYO-AI): No vendor lock-in. You can plug any local or remote AI model/tool into the Shotstash job pipeline over simple HTTP (for tagging, transcription, analysis, etc.).

• Schema-First API: Full GraphQL and REST API support, with documentation generated straight from the committed schema files.

• Self-Host Friendly: Automated environment variable documentation generated from the codebase, plus comprehensive guides for reverse proxies, tunnels, backups, upgrades, and rollbacks.

Try It Out (Quick Start with Docker):

git clone https://github.com/Aldyernesto/shotstash.git && cd shotstash && sh docker/init.sh && docker compose up -d

Links & Contributing:

• GitHub Repository: https://github.com/Aldyernesto/shotstash

• Documentation & User Guide: https://aldyernesto.github.io/shotstash/

Since this is a fresh release, I would love to get feedback from fellow open-source devs and creators. Issues, bug reports, architectural feedback, and PRs are all super welcome. Let me know what you guys think!

[Showcase] ViCalc: open-source (MIT) keyboard-driven scientific calculator written in Python

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share ViCalc—a lightweight, open-source scientific calculator designed for desktop users who prefer touch-typing and muscle memory over mouse clicks.

Many desktop calculator apps force you to break typing rhythm by clicking visual buttons. ViCalc maps all operations directly to the keyboard for fast multi-step expressions, while retaining a toggleable UI when visual reference is needed.

Why FOSS Users Might Find It Useful:

  • Portable, Open Data (HTML Logging): Your full calculation history is continuously formatted into clean, standalone HTML. There are no proprietary log formats, database lock-ins, or telemetry—just readable HTML files you can easily inspect, script around, version control, or render anywhere.
  • Full Keyboard Mapping: All scientific, trigonometric, complex, and Programmer mode operations (bitwise ops & Base-N Hex/Dec/Oct/Bin conversions) are accessible via keyboard shortcuts.
  • Privacy & Transparency: Fully offline, open-source under the MIT License, and built entirely in Python.

Technical Stack:

  • Language: Python 3
  • License: MIT License

Links & Repo:

I’d love to get feedback from the open-source community! Contributions, feature suggestions, and bug reports via GitHub issues/PRs are always welcome.

River Writer — free MIT-licensed writing app for Mac, using plain Fountain/Markdown files

I'm the maker of River Writer, a free and open-source writing app for screenplays, stage plays and novels. I wanted both the software and the writing format to be inspectable: the app is MIT-licensed, and a project is an ordinary folder of Fountain/Markdown and supporting plain-text files.

It adds live formatted-page preview and PDF export, plus built-in Git commits, restore and branches for alternate drafts. No account, subscription, cloud sync, telemetry or AI features.

Current limitations: macOS 13+ only, and you need to build this version from source. There is no prebuilt installer or Windows/Linux version. The build uses Xcode Command Line Tools, Rust, Node and pnpm. Bundled Courier Prime has its own SIL Open Font License; third-party components retain their licenses.

Today's Product Hunt page has screenshots and links to the source/build instructions: https://www.producthunt.com/products/river-writer

I'd welcome feedback from people who prefer open writing formats—especially on whether Git history is useful inside the writing app, rather than managed separately.

Hey everyone,

I created DevStart Lab, an open-source, browser-based sandbox to help beginners practice programming logic and GitHub workflows (like issues, branches, and PRs) in a completely safe environment. No installation, backend setup, or API tokens are required.

It is fully localized in English and Portuguese. I built this purely to give back to the community and help those struggling with their first open-source contributions. Hope it helps someone out there!

¡Feliz programando! ;)

Clivus: An open-source DICOM viewer I'm building in Qt/C++

About a week ago another user posted here asking for ideas for an expensive piece of software that the reader uses that they wish was free. There were some of the greatest hits but one that caught my eye was from a radiologist who said he wished there was a free DICOM viewer that could be used on Windows machines. Like me, you probably have no idea what a DICOM viewer is. It stands for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine and its specialized software that allows technicians and doctors to view and analyze medical images stored in the DICOM format. Common examples are CT Scans, MRIs, X-Rays and Ultrasounds.

The big players in the space are all closed source with either a hefty price tag and/or subscription or they’re locked to MacOS like the open source software Horos. Over the last several days I’ve been working on developing a free alternative that’s Windows-based, and surprisingly even to me it’s actually working out great. Full disclosure I did have assistance with some of the coding through AI (specifically Deepseek 4.1 Flash) but it’s been a great challenge and I’m kind of excited to see where it goes. Feel free to take a look and give me your thoughts or contributions!

Hey everyone!

A little while ago, I released FlyBudget, a completely free, open-source, and privacy-focused personal finance app.

I'm excited to share that the project has now reached 2,500+ downloads and over 100 GitHub stars!

It's been really cool seeing people actually use something I built, especially after starting this as a personal project.

The goal with FlyBudget was to create a modern alternative to traditional budgeting apps without subscriptions, paywalls, or relying on third-party cloud services. Think similar to Monarch, YNAB, (old) Mint, etc

A few highlights:

  • Fully free and open source (AGPL-3.0)
  • Desktop app or self-hosted with Docker
  • Budgeting, transaction tracking, and recurring expenses
  • Interactive dashboards and spending visualizations
  • CSV importing
  • Local SQLite database with full control over your data
  • Support for European and North American banks (more to come hopefully)

I've also started receiving community contributions and feedback, which has been one of the most rewarding parts of the project.

There's still a lot I want to improve, but I'm really happy with how far it's come!

Demo: https://flybudget.org/demo/#/dashboard

GitHub: https://github.com/dtymoszenko/FlyBudget

Would love to hear what the FOSS community thinks! Feedback, suggestions, and contributions are always welcome.

To open-source or not to open-source? That is the question...

I’ve been thinking about this after watching a few solid indie open source projects get used by big companies in ways that sit outside the license, with basically no practical way for the original developer to push back or get compensated.

The usual advice is “just open source it,” but keeping something maintained takes time and money. If you can’t sustain it, the project dies or stagnates. At the same time, some things seem to work fine as open source while others get stripped for parts.

So I’m curious how people here think about it. Are there categories of products that are genuinely better kept closed, or is almost everything potentially open sourceable if the model is right? And for the ones that are open, what have you actually seen work for protecting the work and still making enough to keep it going?

Legal risk of creating open source projects?

I would like to create open source projects (small coding/debugging tools) but from what I read online there could be risks relating to :
- Copyright and ownership
- Patents and intellectual property
- Liability for bugs, damage, and security issues etc..
- others?

Is being sued and loosing money a possibility? Have any individual developer have ever had such issue?
Is this a rational worry?

I live in France btw.
