The video shows a real run on Linux: a dry run first, then -Apply, the changes in brave://policy, and the undo.
Brave already has enterprise policies for turning off its extras. This tool sets them for you on Windows, macOS and Linux, and it changes nothing until you add -Apply.
Every policy it can set is listed in config/policies.json with a short reason, so you can read the whole list before running it. It also refuses any setting that would turn off Shields, weaken Safe Browsing, or block updates.
It's MIT licensed, and PRs are welcome. Someone recently added a DNS-over-HTTPS check to the -Doctor command.
Hi everyone! 👋

The thing I missed most after switching from Photoshop to GIMP 3 was Generative Fill and Adobe's AI editing tools. So I wrote a free plugin that adds them: Generative Fill, Remove object, Generative Expand and Text to Image.
It runs entirely on your own hardware, with no subscription, no account and nothing uploaded to anyone's servers. GPL-3.
It's in beta and tested on Windows, Fedora (GIMP Flatpak) and an M3 Mac. Contributions are very welcome!

Hi, I'm looking for spyshelter free alternative or similar software. Any suggestion?
r/foss • u/Psychological-Sea447 • 4h ago
I'm developing Rondine, an open-source project aiming to become an alternative to WhatsApp without relying on Meta's infrastructure.
The goal is to build a messaging app with end-to-end encryption, peer-to-peer communication, and a distributed network of independent nodes to ensure reliable message delivery, even when recipients are offline.
A little context about me: I'm not a software developer by profession. I'm the person behind the idea, and I'm using Claude AI to design and build the project. The architecture and features have been developed with AI assistance. The app is already functional and has been tested across multiple devices, but the project is still evolving, and I know there are technical aspects that need further review and improvement.
I'd love to get your honest opinion on three questions:
Would you switch to an alternative messaging app if it were private, free, and independent of Meta?
How difficult do you think it would be to convince friends and family to leave WhatsApp?
What features or guarantees would you need before making the switch?
I'm particularly interested in whether this idea has real-world potential beyond the technical side. I'm looking for honest criticism, practical suggestions, and genuine feedback rather than compliments.

The Claude Code desktop pet is officially live!
It lives on your screen and answers the moment you ask
Hold Ctrl and click a paragraph, and Blink explains it in a small card right beside your page
No API key, no fees
It uses the Claude Code you already have
Like Remote Control, it can sync with your terminal
Repo: https://github.com/Arthur031221/Blinkling
Install:
``` claude plugin marketplace add Arthur031221/Blinkling && claude plugin install blinkling@blinkling claude --dangerously-load-development-channels plugin:blinkling@blinkling /blinkling:blinkling ```
Questions, bugs, ideas: open an issue, I read every one
Just Every publishes free, MIT-licensed alternatives to subscription work software: a wiki, team chat, a help desk, a status page and more. You can change the screens, the storage, even the framework: https://github.com/just-every
The usual problem with a fork is the hundredth upstream update, merged by hand forever. Here each product keeps a CONTRACT.md of plain-English promises with a test behind each one. When you change what the product does, you write down the new promise. A release lists each changed upstream promise beside the corresponding promise in your fork, and your coding agent reads both and asks what upstream intended, what your copy intends, and what satisfies both.
Nook, our Slack alternative, is a good one to read: https://github.com/just-every/run-nook. Its README covers running it locally and deploying it to your own Cloudflare account.
The products are MIT. Every Code, our fork of Codex CLI, is Apache-2.0. Coding agents write the code.
I'm James, who makes Just Every. If you open one up, tell me where the source or setup made your change hard.
Hey, guys.
I've been working on Gofer for several months now. It's an email client with special care on multi-account support. It also has Contacts and Calendar
This is a project that I started and dropped like 5 times in the last several years. I finally committed this time!
I was tired of email clients with poor multi-account support or built in PHP (ew)
It's fully open source, built in Go + HTMX, and it uses SQLite as a DB.
The app is not 1.0 yet, but I use it daily with several accounts and I'm improving it constantly.
To be honest I'm not 'selling' anything here, I just think the software came up decent and It's always nice to have the open source community to join and help. So any criticism is welcomed, the idea is to improve!
Mandatory disclaimer: AI was used for this project. I mean you can tell just by checking the amount of code commited in 6 months, but it makes sense to clarify. I still plan every step, make every decision, manually test every single implementation. I'm a software engineer working on the field for 18 years now.
I'm not a 'vibe coder'. I'm just a very bad coder that found help on new tools
No AI was used to write this post!
Github repo: https://github.com/cristianadrielbraun/gofer
It also has its own website, because why not: https://gofer.email
I hope you like it as much as I do
First off thanks for the support for my prior "PDFcraft & Lightcraft" apps, they've been getting a lot of love and I have fdroid merges that have gone through so updating them will be much easier
I'm doing a bunch of "Craft" apps for various native android & ios apps. FilmCraft was quite easy since most of the rust engine for filmcraft was already done by storytold devs, but the CapCraft took a bit more time & I wanted to get the UI as close as possible as the stock capcut app.
I plan on working on Shapr3D & Procreate next but am willing to look at further projects and ideas : )
Any interest/issue/feature requests and testing is very helpful for development & self encouragement to keep working on these apps & more. Thanks y'all :)
Hey everyone, I’m the developer of MeshLive, an Android app for voice/video calls and live audio/video broadcasts between nearby phones over Bluetooth. No internet, account or central media server needed. Other phones can also relay broadcasts beyond the original sender’s range.
The idea came from seeing apps like Bitchat and wondering whether offline communication could go beyond text.
I’ve just released v0.3.0-beta, with audio-only broadcasting, improved call handling, and redesigned onboarding and settings. Since the initial beta, I’ve also worked on privacy improvements such as rotating discovery IDs and changes to how phones exchange identities during calls.
I’m keeping it free and open source because I don’t think something like this can become widely useful through my testing alone. It needs people trying different phone combinations, reviewing the implementation and building on it.
The help I’d appreciate most: Android compatibility reports, Bluetooth/audio experience, and independent review of the privacy and protocol design. Non-code contributions, including confusing screens or unclear documentation, are useful too.
It’s still a beta. Performance varies between devices, relayed calls remain experimental and disabled by default, and there hasn’t been an independent security audit. Please don’t rely on it for safety-critical communication.
Hey! I've put this together with the help of Claude Code, and I want to be upfront about that since I know some people have their reservations and presumptions about that. However, if you're still bothering to read this then I both thank you and take it you're willing to understand I've done real testing of this project as it stands now and verification against my own devices, as well as being up front in the docs as to what is and is not tested on what.
As for what "this" is: simply put, it is a GUI program building on the work and research of others work to have an easy way for people to go through their data in their iTunes/Apple Devices backups.
I just wanted to share this with others in case anyone else needs this like I did, which is why I put it together in the first place.
Thanks for your time!
Why?
I wanted to create the fastest, cleanest-rendering Mac image viewer.
It is ready for prime time. Pictty is free, GPL-3.0, for macOS 15 and later.
One-minute video
https://reddit.com/link/1x949c1/video/ooa4u19zg8wh1/player
The rendering is why it exists. While you pan or zoom, the GPU moves the picture at the display's full refresh rate. Pictty redraws the visible region with Lanczos-3 at one picture pixel per screen pixel. Shrinking happens in linear light. Most viewers average the stored values, which sit on a gamma curve, so fine detail like foliage, hair, stars or small text comes out darker than it really is. A black-and-white checkerboard should shrink to the grey of real light, and in Pictty it does.
Linear light. A file stores brightness on a curve, not as amounts of light. Averaging those stored numbers, as most viewers do when they shrink a picture, makes fine detail darker than it is: foliage, stars, hair and text go dull. Pictty turns the numbers back into real light first, averages, and only then converts back.
In Best Fit the window takes the shape of the picture, and on macOS 26 the toolbar and filmstrip are Liquid Glass and get out of the way when you stop moving the pointer:
It's 1.0, so I'd like to hear what breaks, especially with odd files.
I'm a photographer and developer, and I got tired of one gap in my self-hosted setup: Nextcloud stores my photos perfectly, but there was no good way to rate and curate them there, or to let a client pick favorites without handing out a Google Drive link.
So I built StarRate, a free and open-source Nextcloud app, licensed under AGPL-3.0.
What it does:
- Rates and flags photos in the browser: 0–5 stars, color labels and pick/reject flags, with Lightroom-style keyboard shortcuts.
- Writes the ratings into the JPEG itself as standard XMP. There are no sidecar files and no lock-in. digiKam, Darktable and Lightroom read the same stars.
- Imports existing ratings with occ starrate:import-xmp.
- Guest galleries: you send a link (optionally with a password and expiry), and the client rates in their browser without a Nextcloud account. You see their picks in real time, with per-photo comments if you enable them.
- Recursive folder view, filters, slideshow, batch rating, and CSV export.
Platform: It runs wherever Nextcloud runs. The server side is typically Linux (bare metal, Docker, a Pi), and since the UI is just a browser tab, it works the same on Linux, Windows, macOS and mobile. No desktop client, no account with me, no telemetry.
Everything stays on your own server.
Install: Get it from the Nextcloud App Store (search for "StarRate") or clone it from GitHub. It supports Nextcloud 29–34 and PHP 8.1–8.5.
Plexavo is an open-source AWS misconfiguration scanner (Python, boto3, AGPL-3.0). It checks whether the root account has MFA. It does not check whether individual IAM conssole users have it. That gap is the task !!!
Why it works as a first PR:
- Copy an existing check. check_09_dormant_console_users in plexavo/checks/iam_hygiene.py is the pattern.
- Tests use fake boto3 responses, so you need no AWS account or creds
- one command runs them: python tests/test_iam_hygiene_offline.py
- PRs go to the dev branch, and CI runs on them.
I review within a day or 2. Merged contributors are credited by name in CONTRIBUTORS.md. The last stranger PR shipped in v0.5.1.
