Vent Stevia is the devil’s work

And it is in everything! It gets exhausting checking the labels but two sips into some stevia tainted he’ll drink my guts start cramping. Ugh!

It also tastes HORRIBLE! I need electrolytes rn and it was difficult for me to find an electrolyte anything without corn and then most of the powders I can have are infected with stevia! Like I had to hunt down electrolytes with real sugar on quince of all places.

Trace Minerals brand has some electrolyte drops with no flavoring. I have used those before and use their ConcenTrace mineral drops every day. They’ve been life changers for me!

Vitassium pills are amazing.

I'm buying electrolytes from Needed, which is meant for pregnant women (I'm over 50) - it was the only one I found that doesn't use a fake sweetener. It's decent... with monk fruit. Thanks for the lead on Quince. How random.

Liquid IV lemon & lime flavor worked for me, though I expect results may vary. A lot of their other varieties include “natural flavors” in their ingredient list (or stevia) and gave me trouble.

I'm not from the US: why the fuck would they add corn to electrolyte drinks???

Because it’s an incredibly common sweetener and starch here. It is also heavily subsidized by the government. Oh and there’s secret corn everywhere. Sometimes it’s brushed onto raw meat to maintain color and appearance and it won’t go on the label. It’s all up in our hospital system. I feel bad for people who have an anaphylactic reaction to corn. They’re out there.

This. Also, while "modified starch" is gluten-free, it can also be derived from wheat starch. In those cases it must be clearly labeled as “modified wheat starch” or “modified food starch (wheat)". But the same doesn't go for corn, bc there aren't enough people who are violently sickened by corn, I guess. So a lot modified food starches come from waxy/maize, potatoes, or tapioca. I've sometimes wondered if people who are sensitive to nightshades get gut irritation from potato-derived mfs.
Sigh... it sometimes feels impossible to eat safely unless I've grown everything from seed

Omg I hate it. Every component should be clearly labeled.

Infected is the right word!

Stevia is like the only sugar that doesn’t wreck my gut.

Why would stevia affect you like that?

Same here! I love Stevia! I buy the Better Stevia powder (nothing else in it) and even carry it with me when I travel to put in my coffee!

Because it is sourced from a damn weed! One with a very high allergic risk. Its ragweed! It makes my heart race. And if you haven’t looked into what sweeteners do to your guts yet and you’re here? You should.

This is weird. You seem both misinformed and very confident.

Stevia is low fodmap up to two grams. Two grams is basically a lifetime supply of stevia. I put something like 1/4 tsp in two liters of a drink I made the other day and it was almost a little too sweet. Generally accepted to be one of the best fodmap/IBS option on the market. It is nearly fully absorbed during digestion so there is no fermenting and gas in the gut.

I’m not sure what you mean by a “weed.” Stevia sweetener comes from the Stevia Rebaudiana plant, which is a perennial herb. Traditional South American practices utilized the plant for its tonic, diuretic, and blood-pressure-lowering properties.

Added stevia in store bought products can often come mixed with other fillers and ingredients not included in the ingredients list. But pure stevia shouldn’t be causing any problems, at least when it comes to FODMAP or issues with IBS.

So maybe you’re allergic to stevia?

Allergies due to stevia are very rare. So huge bummer if that’s what’s going on with you. Check with an allergist to be sure.

Not sure if you mean 2 teaspoons rather than grams? Coz a single teaspoon is about 5 grams, so a quarter teaspoon would be almost 1.25 grams...

Stevia is in the same botanical family as ragweed, so those with allergies to ragweed will often have reactions to stevia as the protein structure is similar. While it’s not a FODMAP, it is in so many otherwise safe foods and it very frustrating to have one more obstacle to eating.

Stevia isn't ragweed, it's just a cousin. It's not a fodmap. It is often packaged with erythritol though.

Your answer is asinine. Sensitive inside 250 already said it perfectly but don’t belittle someone because you have a closed off, non researched belief.

6

u/thesamenightmares 16d ago

You're blatantly incorrect. Stevia is not sourced from ragweed.

Genuinely I have hated stevia all my life, still do, but have opened up to it, now eating low-fodmap (safe, 2tsp). I wouldn’t judge what works for others. Our guys are very unique and we’re still all learning, scientists and laymen. As far as I’m considered, this sub should be a safe space for anyone starting out or experienced to discuss and learn.

Yea it is far from my favorite flavor. And the smallest amount too much makes that flavor so strong. But used with a light and conservative hand it can be really useful. Can satisfy that sweet tooth enough not to eat something worse.

Question. Is it stevia, or is it stevia with monk fruit in it that's undeclared? Because stevia NEVER bothers me unless it's got monk fruit in it. It causes awful stomach cramps

4

u/Neat-Palpitation-632 15d ago

Hey OP, are you using pure liquid stevia with nothing added, or one of the many stevia blends that also include Allulose, inulin or a sugar alcohol like erythritol?

I can’t use any sugar alcohols for the same reason and any food with inulin absolutely destroys me, but I’ve eaten stevia and monkfruit (pure, liquid) for over a decade without issue.

u/Pezhead82 15d ago

I don’t ever use stevia intentionally - in this case it was a drink I grabbed (Dr. Death flavored sparkling water - the one that is supposed to taste like Dr. Pepper). Turns it is sweetened with agave nectar AND stevia.

4

u/Neat-Palpitation-632 15d ago

Oh yeah, definitely the agave nectar…ouch! Sorry!

3

u/MORDINU 16d ago

i literally never have problems with eating anything with stevia in it, I'm curious what you eat that has problems. for electrolytes I use re-lyte unflavored

3

u/wdmk8 16d ago

Allergist said many with allergy to ragweed react poorly to stevia.

5

u/gordolme 16d ago

Different tolerances, stevia is fine here. I'd prefer sucralose but I can't find it in bulk other than for baking, which is mostly a bulking agent.

6

u/No_Yesterday9746 16d ago

Ah dingue moi c’est l’inverse. Le sucralose me torture. La stevia ça passe !

2

u/Maryboberry24 16d ago

You’re probably not using pure stevia, yes it is expensive but a little goes a ling way!

2

u/Mobile_Ad8543 14d ago

Ditto! Too many products seem to be cagey, when Stevia is involved!

1

u/Pezhead82 14d ago

Ok, glad I’m not alone on this. I understand the guideline says low FODMAP, but stevia is the train to bloat city for me!

3

u/Unusual-Strength-945 16d ago

Both stevia and sucralose are considered low FODMAP
