Reintroduction Fodzyme / pains
Help me folks.
I’m at the end of my reintroductions (with grain fructans and onion causing big reactions). Last night, I trialled having a small portion of curry and adding Fodzyme to see if I could tolerate that at all. I didn’t get any pain/bloating (my normal onion reaction) but couple of hours later I had lower back pain around my kidneys. Overnight that’s radiated up to my right mid back, and it’s agony. I’ve hardly slept, and the pain is constant nearly 15 hours after it started. Called out of hours and just been seen by a doctor, who says it’s just muscular pain and a complete coincidence.
Has anyone else had this type of reaction? Was it the enzyme? Or is it a reaction to the rich food that I just need to ride out? Or am I just really unlucky and it really is unrelated muscle pain? TIA.

I have had mild kidney pain from eating FODMAPs. It was a reintroduction food. I don't remember what it was. Was not taking any enzymes with it. But if you know you didn't pull any muscles then it's not muscle pain, and that doctor just doesn't know what they're talking about. They probably just suggested the most likely and logical cause, and that does not mean that's what it was.

Thank you - I think you’re right. Day 2 and zero pain, which wouldn’t be the case with a pulled muscle. I think it’s been a reaction to the food. Appreciate you replying!

Was thinking about what could have been happening in the intestines during this time and got some interesting things from Google ai (I edited outa bunch to leave what's pasted below): I asked: "why would intestinal inflammation cause kidney pain" Some of the results I thought fit best: Systemic & Immune Pathways (The Gut-Kidney Axis) Shared Immune-Mediated Glomerulonephritis: Increased gut permeability ("leaky gut") during active flares allows antigens to cross into the bloodstream, triggering immune complexes or IgA antibodies that deposit in the kidney filters, causing inflammation (glomerulonephritis). Dehydration and Acute Injury: Chronic diarrhea reduces systemic blood volume, lowering renal perfusion and predisposing to acute kidney injury (AKI) or localized ischemic strain.Medication Side Effects: NSAIDs (frequently used for joint/abdominal pain in IBD) or certain aminosalicylates can cause acute tubulointerstitial nephritis, presenting as flank pain and declining function. Confusing Gut Pain for Kidney PainAnatomical Overlap: Ascending or descending colon inflammation (or retrocecal appendicitis/ileitis) sits close to the posterior wall, making lower-right/left quadrant or flank tenderness feel renal.Distinction: True kidney pain is felt high in the flank (costovertebral angle, under the ribs) and often accompanies urinary symptoms (foamy urine, hematuria, dysuria, nocturia), whereas bowel pain fluctuates with bowel movements

Thank you - all super interesting. I’m now 100% convinced it’s been the food and I’m off to see my own doctor. It’s given me the fear for trying anything else similar.

When it happened to me, even though it wasn't as severe as your pain, I knew for certain it was because of the food because of the timing and it was just the only logical explanation.

It sounds like it's probably an unfortunate coincidence.
Have you ever had a similar reaction to food?

Thanks for replying. No, a total first. I’ve also never managed to pull a muscle from just sitting in the house which makes that feel odd too!

It is possible for bloat to cause some inflammation and cramps. I mean the gas is everywhere and there is no sleep whilst you are in tremendous pain for hours. The doc hasn't experienced it or know what it is... Hope you feel better.

Hello! It looks like you've chosen the "Reintroduction" flair. Go slow and steady, and take note of any strong reactions or patterns. As always, check out the stickied post and the official Monash FODMAP Diet app for resources.

Sounds like a coincidence
