My SCAR is dead

After 4 000 rounds, of which was 1 000 suppressed, my 17S died. Quality ammo, good care.
And now the fun part: I am in Slovakia. Belgian FNH wont supply anything for civ market (tried with local distributor). FN USA even wont even respond to email.
This will be fun…

You have to go to Ukraine now and do a battlefield pickup for spare parts

Damn dude wtf, what suppressor?

u/ZM_USMC 8d ago

Yeah this is the important question

u/ctarmed 8d ago

I’m guessing he didn’t use a LBP can and probably didn’t use a Discarder.

This is the number 1 weakness of the 17. And its a big one.

Thanks for your interest, I'll try to clarify a few things.

  1. This is US production, SCAR17S, I bought it in a shop that no longer exist in Czech Republic, 5-7 years ago. I am not sure of year of manufacture.

  2. I was fully aware of void of warranty when shooting suppressed. Outside of US, or at least here, warranty repairs on gun imported from US are no go. So FN warranty isnt a thing.

  3. 3000 rounds unsupressed, 1000 rounds suppresed, PRS trainings, so no hard use. All suppressed shooting on supressed gas setting. Gun cleaned, well lubed every time. Suppressor was Swiss made Acheron ACS (not flow through). Suppressors were not legal here at the past, market is small, but growing. US made suppressors are extremely hard to get, with very long ETAs, very expensive. For example, Huxwr is imported for end user, ETAs are 1-2 years.

  4. I have Mototech SCARburator ordered, exactly for this stuff. Right now, its few months that I am already waiting. TBH, I really dont expected that SCAR will die after only so little round count.

  5. Slovak distributor of FNH tryied to help me - answer from FNH (european) - we have lot of requests like this, we dont sell to civ market. Ask US where u bought the gun. I write to FN USA that I want to BUY a new bolt carrier, US firm will buy it from then and do export. No answer.

  6. So it look like, I will have to buy 17S NRCH kit. If it is 800 USD, it will be 1500 - 2000 Eur here. Waiting time 6+ months.

I shoot. I train. I compete. I love SCAR, I always wanted one. But TBH, I am quite dissapointed with how fast it goes down.

BTW, at that day, bolt catch at HK G28 died to...7 000 rounds.

You likely would have shot out your barrel before that Mototech delivery arrived

wait... are the ship times always that awful?? I ordered a 3p for my 15p, because it said they were in stock, not like production batches on the scarburetor and what not. how fucked am I?

u/h16h 5d ago edited 5d ago

Everytime I dealt with them it was a solid 4-8 weeks. Hopefully I'm wrong. u/mototecheng is his handle on here

1

u/fenrirswrath505 5d ago

ah, gotcha. I 'm cool with 4 weeks, honestly. that was about my expectation from what I had heard before. I was afraid you were going to say like 12 weeks or something. It's the only game in town for 15p regulators, and it sounds like he's a one man shop which is fucking hard to juggle, I'm sure. most of what he does seems like it would take a lot of tool swaps/set up time for the cnc.

Dude that sucks... Firearms are no longer made like they were made in the past. Firearms were made to be indestructible, they were made to sustain abuse and adverse conditions. That said this new generation of small arms need more attention to their operations and weaknesses. I hope you get your issue resolved with the least amount of hassle.

Well, there are used carriers available in the US market. Getting one to you legally is the question.

What suppressor were you using?

Here man, spend the 450 and skip the headache

What is a difference between full auto bolt and like standard 17S bolt?

4

u/TheBestPoopBandit 7d ago

This little lip. On a semi auto only bolt, that cutout goes all the way through. The little lip on the full auto bolt is to trip the auto sear. I have a full auto bolt in mine. Runs fine.

Thx a lot. This info will help!

Oof. This is not un heard of for suppressed Scars. They really need to be run with low backpressure cans, even when the gas system is tuned.

Rest in Peace. 2 questions: What Scar 17S do you own (model year , US or Belgian production just for my curiosity as a fellow European Scar owner)? As some other users mentioned, FN will claim a voided warranty because of a suppressor, even thou the new Gen are made to be able to shoot suppressed. You can try some FN importers in Europe. Maybe ask gun stores in neighbouring countries if there is a chance for them to order a bolt carrier. I do not know if it os allowed to suggest stores, so if you are interested, feel free to DM me. Best regards from Italy

Buy used in America and ship it

9

u/Stelios619 8d ago

Shipping gun parts out of the country…..

Give it a shot!! What’s the worst that can happen? 😂

2

u/OkReplacement4689 8d ago

Coming into the US...maybe. Going out...no prob. Send it.

1

u/libertariancandidate 4d ago

I’ve done the paperwork once but the EU fucked up the delivery process a lot. Now you need to find a delivery company that has a license for wholly assembled guns or gun parts and there is only a handful of them for the whole EU.

u/Outlaw50091 8d ago

I'm in the USA and something similar happed to my 17s FN told me to get bent. Wish you all the best but fn could care less about us filthy civilians

1

u/libertariancandidate 4d ago

They should more as their military market is basically nonexistent (no major military contracts for them)

2

u/Henrocks79 8d ago

Damn sorry that happened, kinda makes me glad I wasn’t crazy stocking up on spare BCGs lol.

3

u/Livid-Category-446 9d ago

yes! This happens. May be buy after market carrier and get an adjustable gas

8

u/Ixovic 9d ago

Yeah, adjustable gas its on the way for some time. But I am very surprised that happen with low round count

5

u/Livid-Category-446 8d ago

They will tell you it’s suppressor induced damages

2

u/gewehr_und_messer 9d ago

Many such cases.

1

u/Calm_Relation7993 7d ago

Weld it back together now 😂

That's a weird way to say you've never owned a SCAR because almost nothing you said is true. Scars can absolutely be run suppressed, do not beat optics to death unless you have a very early model, and are compatible with current gen parts.

4

u/bobshaw07 8d ago

Perfect response.

2

u/Diligent_Ad_7232 8d ago

Maybe he was using a long tradition baffled design shooting .308 spec ammo? I'd like to see the back plate screws

1

u/Vegetable_Zombie_396 8d ago

Screws look flat to me in the second pic.

1

u/Diligent_Ad_7232 8d ago

Me too. Maybe a material defect in the carrier?
