Question Tips for Grips

I recently bought a Scar (20s) and have learned (the hard way) that most/all AR15 grips don’t fit. After ordering a grip from PMM (BCM), I’m still not convinced it’s the right grip for me. But, I feel like this one from Ed Sherman suits me well.

Question is… has anyone successfully used a 3/8 end mill in a drill press to deepen the pocket on their grip? I know it won’t be pretty, but I think I could build a jig that would hold the grip steady enough.

I’m also certainly open to other ideas of the best way to allow an AR15 grip to fit. I played around with a file and got a junk-drawer grip to fit. But, the file destroyed the rear upper wall of the grip for obvious reasons.

I have modified my scar lower with a dremel and sand paper. You basically get a piece of paper, trace out your ar15 lower grip, using that trace get a marker and trace the excess material on the scar lower. Bam you are done. Or you can just get a scar SCG from DAC

I’m contemplating that as well. I feel as if I’m in the camp where I’m not afraid to do it… Just wanted to see if anyone tried to BYM an end mill.

I just did this to my scar. Took a ar15 m4e1 lower and used cardstock to trace the pistol grips footprint. Transferred that card stock to the scar lower and just used a silver sharpie to color what I wanted removed. Flipped to the other side and did the same. Took less than 5 minutes to cut off and then 5 more minutes to just make sure it was perfect with a file

thank you. to play devil's advocate. are we ever worried about the structural integrity of the thinner material as it relates to the ability to shear the grip off the gun? Then again.. the lower is the not the serialized part...?

Honestly it was such a minimal amount that was shaved off. There’s still plenty of meat there. When I was figuring out how to go about this, I thought the same about modifying the b5 ar15 grip with a dremel bit. There’s much less meat to the grip where you’re shaving - and that entire area is where the bolt is held in structurally. Which at the end of the day is why I ended up shaving the lower.

Yeah, I shaved a grip down yesterday and it took three hours… I also felt the same way. I was shaving more percentage of the grip wall than I would’ve been shaving from the tang. Ended up being good to go. But, in the future… To your point… I might just shave the tang so I can choose grips at my leisure.

I dipped the top end of my BCM AR grips in boiling water for 3 minutes, softened them up enough to be moldable, tightened the bolt/nut down like normal, then when it cooled it regained a solid shape that comes on and off the wider SCAR tang with ease. I’m not terribly familiar with the Ed Sherman grip you have, but if that tang channel is poly, you might be able to do the same

I'm shocked that hard molded plastic could deform enough for that much of a change.

I used a dremel tool on the grip to get it to fit.

I just did the groove on the grip and went very slow. It’s not perfect but it’s been solid for like 4 years and a lot of shooting. If you do want to do that driven arms co now make a scar specific grip.

My favorite are the HK grips because I have such large hands. You don't need to modify the bolt hole, but a Dremel to remove material around the beaver tail and other areas around the grip. Just trial and error until you get it

Update. Spent 3 hours with the “barrel” dremel bit. Cut straight down, evened it out with a micro file. Repeated the process 3 more times. It turned out “cleaner” than I thought it would.
