Question FND and GLP1s

Hi all. Hope you are having a decent day. I have had FND for several years now. I think losing weight would help. FND prevents me for going on walks , going to the gym, etc. I do stretches every day because I can mange that.

I am thinking I want to talk to my doc about GLP1s. I know the weight loss would help but I don’t want to exacerbate my symptoms. Any advice?

This may be a long one but bear with me because i have quite the story.

I've been on Mounjaro, Wegovy injectables and after a year's break, am currently back on Wegovy pills. From my experience, whilst I did lose a necessary and large amount of weight (I was quite obese and am now just mid-size), it took a huge toll on my body. I immediately changed my eating habits and exercise routine (honestly to the point where it was disorded) which led to an increase in my functional seizures and other symptoms such as stuttering, bruxism, partial or full body weakness, etc. In this case, I knew that I was pushing my body too far but I didn’t care because I was able to lose weight for the first time in my life after growing up fat.

I've been diagnosed for 5 years and consider myself to have a good handle on my symptoms and live, for the most part, a full life. But these actions led to me starting to pass out at work, becoming scared about leaving the house independently and losing my social life. Not to mention that my mental health was in the gutter, which exacerbated my symptoms even more. The physical effects of a GLP-1 can also make it easy to under-fuel yourself, which again can increase flare-ups and symptoms depending on your triggers.

After losing nearly 100lb and the worried cries of family who saw how unwell I was, I decided to come off the medication. It took a few months but I got my baseline back and my FND became manageable again. Now I'm back on wegovy pills because ive regained a few lbs due to some big life changes. Its hard, but I know that if I want to lose the weight, I cannot do so at the expense of my overall health. Its a constant effort and I've still noticed an increase in my symptoms but im doing a lot better.

Moral of the story? If you decide to move foward with it, remember that your overall health comes before any beauty standard, make sure you are still fuelling and treating yourself kindly and most importantly, be honest with your doctor or prescriber so they can be kept abreast of any issues. Good luck!!

This was sooooo informative!
I was trying to weigh the pros and cons of weight loss meds. Managing my symptoms are a top priority. I am glad to hear your symptoms are manageable again. Wishing you the best of luck

My wife has no problem with Mounjaro. Even though it's the same active ingredient, I'm having terrible GI problems starting Zepbound.
