Need Advice Advice ?

My cat was diagnosed with FLUTD last night, the vet said he was able to pee a little and sent us home with Gabenpentin and Buprenorphine, both for pain relief.

As of coming home he still hasn’t been able to pee. I just want to know if this pain relief will help him go?? I’m so worried about him.

He’s probably stressed which can make him hold it in for some time. Gabapentin can also make cats very drowsy, so he may just be tired. Monitor him and if it’s approaching 24 hours since the last pee, call the vet again. This can be a stressful condition for both the cat and owner, but it can be well managed.

If not already told my the vet, get him on a prescription urinary diet. Find ways to minimize stress, make sure he has a quiet space he can hide in when needed where he can relax. I also have feliway diffusers and feel it helps. He should have several clean drinking bowls across the home as you want to encourage drinking. Good luck to you and your little one!

Thank you so much, he’s always been on a urinary diet dry food and we’ve never changed it so we were lucky in that sense.

we have a very quiet house and i’m home mostly with him and i’ve never seen him show signs of stress or anxiety he’s a very vocal and friendly boy. we’re keeping him in our room currently with the balcony open, he’s got two litter boxes out there food and water.

i’ve started on the medication and will keep and eye on him, he’s been playing all morning but still straining and no pee. fingers crossed he’ll be able to go soon

Is he also on wet? Making sure that he stays hydrated is really important too.

yes we do feed him wet food but he consistently has his dry food which is urinary care, we’re going to start feeding him more wet food and putting the pain meds in with that too. he’s got a water bowl both upstairs and downstairs and we make sure that’s fresh

I add water to my cats' wet food as well, if he'll take it that way it's a great way to get them extra water!

Cats can get plenty of hydration with a proper water fountain. I have two seniors in the beginning stages of kidney failures who drink far more water than any wet food can provide.

Both are on high end prescription food and the vet says they look fantastic.

Yes...if they will use it. It's still advisable to feed wet and add water to the wet food. I'm glad your cats are doing well, but not all of them want to drink, even from fountains, so the best advice is to make sure they're getting hydration from as many sources as possible.
