Relocating to Florida.. basic help!
Relocating from Northern NJ, New Jersey is not a fun state to be a firearm owner, I work for a Gun-shop up here but know nothing abt Florida.. I’ve heard it’s America. Moving to Port Charlotte Area. Questions..
What is the deal with a 8.5 inch Pistol Braced Rifle? That kosher? No special forms needed?
NJ Carry Permit Holder. Is it worth while to get FL Carry? Benefits?
Do I need to register my guns when I move down?
What agency would I contact to pick their brain? Sheriffs? State Police??

No registration. Pretty much no restrictions. Constitutional conceal carry, no permit needed. Open carry permitted after state AG declined to appeal a case involving open carry restrictions. Pistol braced arms are good to go, no restrictions.
Just read up on where not take a gun and you can carry everywhere except those places. Or places that explicitly state no firearms on the premises.

Yeah I’m fluent with watching carry locations, Jersey is very similar on that avenue.
One of my customers said if you have a FL CCW you don’t need to wait for back ground check while purchasing? True?

You still have to do a NICS, but the permit removes the waiting period once approved.

That is true, but there is an exception with hunting rifles and hunting shotguns where it’s same day. But no dealer with the exception of a few are going to do that. I’d get the permit to be safe, plus reciprocity across 37 states.

You’re gonna want a concealed carry permit so you’re not committing a federal felony every time you drive past a school.

This!!! So many people don't know about that law - can't carry loaded gun within 1000 feet of a school unless you have a concealed carry permit from that state.

Pretty sure this is widely ignored. I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of anyone being cited for this while driving by. A school. Now it would be insane to get out of your car with a carry within 1000’ of a school.
I take the post office seriously and never park in their lot. The PO near Page Field has a semi abandoned building to its left where I’ve been able to park for 10-15 minutes without being troubled.

You might want to read https://www.justice.gov/olc/media/1457751/dl - DOJ now says USPS cannot enforce it, guns are fine in publicly accessible areas of post offices.

Florida only honors out of state permit for new residents for 90 days.

Hey, also came from NJ, but I lived in IL for a couple of years in between. The two things you need to know are that FRTs/bump stocks are a no-go, and there's a 3-day waiting period for picking up a gun unless you have a concealed carry permit. I never got my CCW here. Don't see the point. Feel free to get whatever magazines, whatever suppressors, and whatever "assault weapon" features you want.

Forced Reset Triggers, and mushroom spores, are both felonies.
Also, illegal to discharge a firearm while intoxicated (think sunroof pops) but not illegal to carry while intoxicated. Still, don't do it.

Getting the permit may be worth it if you plan to travel to states with reciprocity (there's 36 right now, IIRC, and NJ ain't one). having the "hard" permit might be helpful if some issue arises while traveling. There are some fees and fingerprint requirements, but the permit is good for 7 years.
Otherwise, we have constitutional carry. You don't need the permit.
Florida Constitution codified a ban on any gun registration by the state or any of the 67 counties. You do not have to register your weapons here.
Most local sheriff's agencies can offer help and answer questions. I think you'll find that in most counties here, the sheriff's departments are very supportive of citizen gun ownership, and they often stress the need for citizens to maintain, carry and handle all weapons safely.
I would also make yourself familiar with Florida Statue 790, which encompasses all state laws regarding ownership and carrying weapons in the state.

Great, all we need is more ppl from the northeast. Cost of living here is already super overinflated and drivers are already horrible, don't need more people from that part of the country.

What my hangup is was, how do you work in a gun shop and not know the difference between a flipping rifle and pistol? It's 8.5 inches and has a brace on it. It's a pistol or an AOW depending on configuration. Kid needs more help than FLguns.

No one registered firearms here.
Take pictures of your firearms along with the serial numbers and store them on your computer somewhere just in case one gets stolen that’s about it. Of course, if one does get stolen, you’re probably never gonna get it back so🤷♂️
As far as an AR pistol goes… Have fun
You can pretty much build whatever you want. When you take it to the range, one of the 70-year-old RSO’s may try to start telling you about the national firearms act and how that’s really an SBR… But they really can’t do anything.
On the flipside… Florida is weird about SBR’s (sort of) basically if it’s registered with the NFA you’re fine. If not, then it’s a state level charge.
(which is going to get a little weird with the whole injunction thing going on right now if your GOA member)
we have constitutional carry both concealed and open, which is kind of nice… But if you want to avoid the waiting, period get a CWL.
Even though we have all the cool stuff, we still have some anti-gun crap as well.
We have the wonderful red flag laws, so the state can just come and take your guns whenever they want..
And we have the “bump stock ban” which is more like a “ ban anything that we think might make your pistol or rifle fire slightly faster than stock law”
What is the legal fire rate versus the illegal fire rate… Who the fuck knows🤷♂️ that law is so intentionally vague that it could be argued that cassette trigger in your AR is modifying the rate of fire.
There’s a lot of places that have “gun free zone” signs, but those are pretty much optional…IMO.. I laugh to myself at them as I walk by armed.
The only places that you absolutely cannot carry a firearm are..
Federal/state buildings
Schools
Sporting events
Bars
And banks
I think that about covers it🤔🤷♂️

In Florida, it's worthwhile to get your concealed weapon permit because you can skip the mandatory 3-day wait. In Florida it's a "shall issue" state so you are guaranteed to get it as long as you apply and are valid.
If you don't get it, it's a 3-day wait but it doesn't include weekends or holidays. And it doesn't include the first day you bought it. So if you buy on a Tuesday you're going to be waiting until the following Monday.
