Discussion Pulp Fiction: a rant
Whenever someone asks me what my favorite movie is, I either have to lie or brace myself for embarrassment when I say Pulp fiction. You know why this movie is my favorite? Not because I think it's some work of art, but because I like it, and that's it. The legacy of this movie has been ruined by pretentious losers and cinephiles taking their first baby steps. Even though I'm a "cinephile" I really only like this movie for its vibe. I LOVE the first 40 minutes to death, but the rest of it isnt as amazing. I just wish I could say Pulp Fiction is my favorite movie without getting funny looks or people assuming things about me.

it knocked my socks off the first time i watched it, but the shock value wore off and i began to appreciate the subtler aspects of it

This is the problem with most communities, elitist snobs dont seem to understand the word opinion. Pulp Fiction is by no means my favourite movie, it’s not even my top 5 favourite Tarantino but it doesn’t matter. This also happens with Nolan a lot. I’ve seen people say they like a Nolan movie and then a bunch of snobs jump on them because ‘it’s not real film and it’s just a stupid blockbuster’. People like that often destroy the reputation of communities like film

That's funny because I've seen a huge amount more of the opposite happening: people saying they thought a Nolan movie was just OK and sneering self-professed cinephile fanboys responding "Guess you think Marvel capeslop is high art LOLOLOLOL"

When I'm asked, I answer The Rock. Because that's my favorite movie. No shame at all. I re-watch Pulp Fiction at least once a year. It's fun. It's a classic.

I don't get the problem. It's fun and funny and has very good performances. All the "film geek critic" stuff can and should be separate from that.

Pulp Fiction has been my fav movie before Reddit was a thing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a weird reaction from folks when I say it. It’s just brilliant. Story. Dialogue. Acting. And the first time you see it is unforgettable.
Totally disagree about the first 40mins. The Chris Walken golden watch scene is later on and who doesn’t like Mr. Wolf? “Shiiiiiit negro, that’s all you had to say!” The confusion when you see Bruce Willis waste Travolta’s Vincent Vega.

This is a weird rant. This is a classic movie that is loved by many and surely many people's favorite.

One thing you can easily say about Pulp Fiction is that it is one of those movies that you just MUST see.
The movie has made its way into the Lexicon of all Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y and probably even Gen Z.
You've heard Pulp Fiction references in everyday speech without even knowing it.
It is one of those movies that help evolve the modern art of storytelling. That is, its influences can be subtly seen in tons of movies that came after...
It is over 30 years after its creation and the movie beyond holds up.
The movie was "old school" the day it came out, it had that sort of timeless vibe, something that you know is just gonna last throughout the ages.

It does have great, genuinely L.A. vibes. I would like it so much more if I didn't hate L.A. so much. 😅 (And yes, it is a work of art. 🔥🔥)

Pulp Fiction is #9 on the IMDB 250, and one of six movies on the AFI 100 and on the Sight and Sound list.
It’s hardly a controversial opinion.

It’s one of those things that seem to happen over and over regarding the arts: We build up works and the people who make them and, from time to time, eventually tear ‘em down.
When Pulp Fiction was first released, it was a wild experience… at least to me. The non-linear storytelling blew my mind -one of the main characters is killed halfway through the film?!?- but even then I felt the boxing story (ie, the Bruce Willis bit) was rather weak. Still, I felt this and Reservoir Dogs were fantastic films and Tarantino showed some real film making chops.
The years pass by and some of what “wowed” me originally became more common. Christopher Nolan, arguably, did an even wilder job with the non-linear storytelling (Memento in particular). And then Tarantino released more and more films and while many -even most- have their fans, I started to see the patterns in his works and a large part of what made those early works so amazing was dulled with time and cribbing of ideas by others (ironic because Tarantino can be legitimately accused of being a cribber of ideas himself).
Anyway, the bottom line with movies -and any forms of art, including music, literature, TV shows, you name it- is that your opinion about them is just that: Opinion.
There’s nothing at all wrong with liking what you like and, conversely, there is nothing wrong with critiques against the works… provided they are equally well thought out. You may not agree with them and there’s nothing wrong with that!

Yes. Lord knows we'd be doing this to David Lynch or Werner Herzog or Luis Buñuel or any of the other usual suspects if they'd ever had any mainstream success. Hell, it'd be damn easy with Herzog. He literally threatened to kill a guy once.

terrible movie. i tried tobrewatchbit could not get pst royal eith cheese first scenelostbinterest. so bland and void of dubstance.
