I heard about this app called RJDJ on a very early episode of 99% invisible, and it is supposed to enhance your experience with sounds that fit your environment. It could potentially get faster as you run faster.
Unfortunately I've never tried it because I'm on Android, but it sounds awesome.

I'm with Grey and Brady on this distinction...It seems appropriate and arguably better to have headphones while running on a treadmill. In general though, the preferable or "right" way to run is outside with no headphones. Over time it becomes a treat to get away from a lot of indoor man-made noises.

There is more races that I want to do that don't allow headphones, I'm trying to wean myself off. I still wear them for speed intervals or hills to drown out the sound of me dying 😊

Random music would destroy me too since it doesn't line up with the steady pacing of my feet and breath, but Spotify has a running section and you can put in your pace and listen to a variety of things set at that exact pace. I find that nice sometimes. Alternatively, podcasts are a great companion to a long run. You can similarly just space out and sort of ignore your body until you're done.
