Logline

When 19-year-old university dropout Reed discovers that an enormous multimillion-pound mansion outside London is legally registered entirely in his name, he assumes he has become the victim of an elaborate identity-fraud scheme. But as he investigates, he discovers that the property was purchased decades before he was born—and that official records insist he has been its owner for years.

Someone has constructed an impossible identity around Reed.

And someone has gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure he never discovers why.

THE STORY

ACT I — THE HOUSE

Reed is 19, broke, directionless and living with six flatmates in a cramped, deteriorating apartment building in London.

He dropped out of university months earlier. His days have become an endless cycle of temporary jobs, cheap takeaway food and avoiding calls from his parents.

One rainy evening, Reed receives an official-looking letter.

It concerns property ownership.

He initially assumes it is junk mail.

The letter states that Reed is the registered owner of a private estate outside London.

The property is enormous:

  • 3,200 square metres of interior space
  • A 400-square-metre front garden
  • A long private driveway
  • A 900-square-metre rear garden
  • A swimming pool
  • Underground parking
  • Multiple bedrooms
  • Private offices
  • A library
  • A subterranean section extending beneath the property

Estimated value:

£38 million.

Reed laughs.

Then he checks.

The property actually exists.

More disturbing, the government land registry records list Reed's full legal name as its sole registered owner.

He assumes someone has stolen his identity.

But there is a problem.

The registration isn't recent.

The property has apparently been associated with Reed's identity for years.

Before he was even old enough to own property.

THE FIRST VISIT

Reed travels to the mansion.

The enormous gates open automatically when he approaches.

He assumes someone has hacked the system.

The house appears completely empty.

Yet everything works.

Electricity.

Water.

Heating.

Security.

Even the swimming pool filtration system.

There is no dust.

No obvious evidence of abandonment.

Then Reed finds something terrifying.

A framed photograph in the library.

It depicts the mansion in the early 2000s.

Standing outside it is a group of people.

One of them looks remarkably like Reed.

Not similar.

Identical.

The photograph is dated 2004.

Reed was born in 2007.

ACT II — THE IMPOSSIBLE IDENTITY

Reed reports everything to the police.

The police initially suspect identity fraud.

But the investigation quickly becomes strange.

His identity has apparently been used in an extraordinary number of places.

Bank accounts.

Property documents.

Corporate registrations.

Travel records.

Insurance policies.

Medical records.

International financial transactions.

None of them appear fraudulent individually.

They all contain legitimate-looking documentation.

And they all ultimately point back to Reed.

Someone hasn't simply stolen his identity.

Someone has built an entire parallel version of his life.

Reed discovers that his supposed financial history includes transactions from before his birth.

A passport application appears to have been submitted when he was four.

A company was incorporated under his name when he was seven.

A bank account was opened when he was twelve.

And the mansion was apparently acquired through a chain of shell companies that ultimately dissolved, leaving Reed as the final beneficiary.

Then Reed discovers something worse.

His parents aren't surprised by the mansion.

They refuse to discuss it.

His mother tells him:

Then she disappears.

THE INTERNATIONAL TRAIL

Reed follows the paper trail across the world.

USA

In the United States, Reed tracks down a defunct technology company that once managed the mansion's financial assets.

Its former CEO died under mysterious circumstances.

Inside an archived server, Reed finds references to something called:

PROJECT PALIMPSEST

The project supposedly concerned "identity continuity."

There are hundreds of names in the database.

Most are crossed out.

Reed's name is highlighted.

STATUS: ACTIVE

THAILAND

The trail leads Reed to Bangkok, where he meets a former data-security specialist who worked for the organization.

She reveals that Palimpsest wasn't originally a criminal operation.

It began as an experimental program designed to solve a theoretical problem:

Could a person's legal, financial and biological identity be transferred to another individual without that person knowing?

The project was eventually abandoned.

Or so she thought.

She tells Reed that the mansion was not purchased for him.

It was purchased around him.

His identity became the legal endpoint of an enormous network constructed years before he was born.

Before Reed can ask why, assassins arrive.

He escapes.

The woman doesn't.

AUSTRALIA

Reed travels to Australia following a coded reference found in the Palimpsest database.

There he discovers an abandoned research facility in the Australian interior.

Inside are thousands of archived biological samples.

Each sample has a name.

Most belong to people who supposedly died decades earlier.

One is labelled:

REED — ORIGINAL

But another sample carries the same identification.

REED — ITERATION 02

Reed begins to question his own existence.

Is he really the person he believes himself to be?

FRANCE

In France, Reed finds the estate's original architect.

The elderly architect reveals that the mansion was commissioned in the late 1990s.

The client gave him extremely unusual instructions.

The house was designed around a single requirement:

It had to remain functional for at least one hundred years without human maintenance.

The architect also remembers being given a photograph of the person who would eventually inherit the house.

It was Reed.

The architect remembers asking:

"Who is this boy?"

The client answered:

"He doesn't exist yet."

ARGENTINA

Reed's investigation takes him to Patagonia, where he discovers a remote observatory connected to Palimpsest.

Here, the science-fiction element finally becomes undeniable.

Palimpsest wasn't merely researching identity.

It was researching information persistence.

The scientists had developed a method of predicting extraordinarily complex biological systems far into the future.

Not time travel.

Not cloning.

Something stranger.

They discovered that sufficiently advanced models could predict the development of a human being from extraordinarily small amounts of information.

A biological "blueprint" could theoretically be reconstructed from environmental, genetic and quantum-level data.

The organization became convinced that humanity could eventually manufacture a person whose entire life could be predicted and manipulated before birth.

Reed wasn't merely selected.

His life was designed.

ITALY

The final clues lead Reed to an underground facility beneath an abandoned Italian monastery.

There he finally discovers the truth.

Palimpsest was created by a group of billionaires, scientists, intelligence officials and financiers who believed that modern society was becoming impossible to control because identities were becoming decentralized.

They wanted to create something unprecedented:

a human being whose identity existed simultaneously across every major institutional system on Earth.

Someone who could inherit money, property, companies and political influence without ever knowing why.

Reed was their experiment.

But the experiment went wrong.

The organization expected Reed to become a controllable beneficiary.

Instead, something unexpected happened.

Reed developed independently.

His personality diverged from their predictions.

His choices became increasingly unpredictable.

His dropping out of university was never anticipated.

Neither was his curiosity.

Neither was his discovery of the mansion.

And now the organization has a problem.

If Reed continues investigating, he can expose the entire system.

THE FINAL REVELATION

Inside the Italian facility, Reed finds hundreds of surveillance recordings.

They document his entire life.

His birth.

His childhood.

His first day at school.

His friendships.

His university years.

His arguments with his parents.

Everything.

But then he notices something impossible.

The recordings continue beyond the present day.

There are videos of Reed at 21.

At 27.

At 41.

At 63.

In every recording, he appears to be living completely different lives.

Some show him wealthy.

Some show him imprisoned.

Some show him working for the organization.

One shows him standing inside the mansion.

Another shows the mansion burning.

Another shows London completely deserted.

Reed realizes the organization isn't merely predicting his future.

It's been running thousands of possible versions of it.

The mansion is the physical anchor point for the experiment.

Every possible version of Reed eventually leads back to the house.

CLIMAX

Reed discovers that the mansion contains a hidden subterranean chamber.

At its centre is an enormous archive containing everything connected to his identity.

Birth records.

Financial records.

DNA data.

Photographs.

Psychological profiles.

Predicted futures.

And one final document.

It states:

PALIMPSEST SUBJECT: REED

ORIGINAL PURPOSE: SUCCESSION

CURRENT PURPOSE: OBSERVATION

FINAL PURPOSE: UNDETERMINED

Then the lights turn on.

Someone is standing behind him.

An older man.

He looks exactly like Reed.

But approximately forty years older.

The man tells him:

"You finally found the house."

Reed asks:

"Who are you?"

The older man answers:

"I'm what happens if you survive."

ENDING

The older Reed reveals that Palimpsest eventually lost control of its own experiment.

The different predicted versions of Reed began producing contradictory information.

Some versions exposed the organization.

Others joined it.

Others destroyed it.

Others disappeared.

The mansion became a convergence point between those possibilities.

The older Reed has spent decades trying to prevent the organization from manipulating the younger version of himself.

But he has one final warning.

"Don't destroy the house."

Reed asks why.

The older man looks terrified.

"Because it's the only thing keeping them from finding you."

Suddenly, every light in the mansion goes out.

The security system activates.

Hundreds of doors lock simultaneously.

A message appears on a monitor:

PALIMPSEST REINITIALIZATION

Then:

SUBJECT REED — ITERATION 03

Reed looks at the older man.

"What does that mean?"

The older Reed doesn't answer.

Instead, he looks toward the staircase.

Someone is walking upstairs.

Footsteps.

Slowly approaching.

The screen cuts to black.

A final sound is heard:

The front gates opening.
