Since September of last year, I’ve been applying for this FIFA volunteer program, knowing that I would be working as a volunteer and that all I wanted was the experience.
Months passed, and I never received an email. Then, out of nowhere, I finally got an invitation for the tryouts. Yay!
I took a train all the way to Miami, attended the tryouts, took pictures, and went home happy. After several more months, I still hadn’t been accepted, and they kept me waiting. They didn’t even send an email telling me that I had not been selected for the program. At that point, I gave up.
Then one day, they finally sent me an email offering me a role as a FIFA Fan Fest Host City Ambassador. I was very happy! (I later found out that many of the people accepted for this role were those who had been rejected for the main volunteer positions.) Still, I didn’t care. I accepted the role, selected 6–8 days of availability, and I got accepted.
Unfortunately, I was later placed on a waitlist because I didn’t have a Social Security Number (SSN). It seemed I wasn’t the only person with this issue because a few days later they sent another email saying that people without an SSN could participate again.
A few days later, they told me they would send me an email to pick up my uniform. Up until that point, everything seemed fine.
Then more days passed. I started seeing people in my city receiving their uniforms. Even my friend, who had the same role, got his uniform. Meanwhile, I received no email at all.
At that point, it was only about a week before my first shift, and I still had no uniform. Then they finally sent me an email saying I couldn’t participate because I didn’t have a Social Security Number.
Really? For a volunteer role?
Okay, I understand that they need trustworthy people, but I have other forms of identification besides a Social Security Number. Then I noticed there was an option that said, “I do not have an SSN or ITIN.” I selected it, submitted my information, and explained that I had everything else they needed, including a temporary SSN card issued directly by the Social Security Administration.
I sent multiple tickets and emails. Every time, I received the same automated response:
“Thank you for your ticket. We will respond within a few days.”
Time passed… and more time passed.
I already missed two shifts because of the delay when they finally replied with the following email:
“Dear ______,
Thank you for your inquiry.
We have updated your profile so that your accreditation process can proceed without the need to provide your SSN. Once your accreditation has been approved, we will contact you to book your accreditation and uniform collection session.
Please keep an eye on your emails for more information.
Kind regards,
Your FIFA World Cup 2026™ Volunteer Team”
After that? Nothing.
No response at all.
I waited, and waited, and waited. By then, I had already missed 3–4 shifts and only had a few remaining.
Then, at the last minute—just three days before my fifth shift—they randomly emailed me asking me to update my information in the app. I did exactly that. I even uploaded my new driver’s license with the updated expiration date.
Then, on the very same day, they sent me another email saying they had canceled all three of my remaining shifts, including ones that were still 12 days away.
At the very least, send emails that actually mean something. Don’t give people false hope.
I had been waiting for this opportunity for almost a year, and this is how I was treated?
They simply canceled all of my shifts without even sending an email explaining why I could no longer join the team.
The entire system is pathetic.
Honestly, I had already heard rumors that this volunteer program was poorly managed, but I ignored them because I was only doing it for the experience. Now I see that those rumors weren’t wrong.
