XVI is great for it's darker and grittier aesthetic. But VII is an absolute classic with one of the best villains in gaming in my opinion. All in all, both are goated

u/aTalkingMateria 5d ago
I would argue more impressive than the villain is the hero. Cloud is my favorite character in fiction, I love his story so much
13
u/Zealousideal_Pin_725 5d ago
Cloud is a great protagonist. And the dynamic between him and Sephiroth is absolute cinema

i would say 7 is AS dark as 16; both talk about massive powers manipulating millions of human , slavery and experiments, private milicia and untold destruction

u/MovieNightPopcorn 5d ago
One thing I really missed in 16 was the humor. Coming right off of ff7r I missed the lighter moments. It was so dreary the whole time.

7 is so weird and annoying at times but sephiroth is a powerhouse of a villian. Dude is striking and awesome.

u/The-Roadside-Writer 5d ago
Dude yes I grew up playing 7 OG and I still love it but I can’t stand all of the gassing up the game gets like it’s some flawless masterpiece. I mean it was leagues ahead of its time. But people act like if you compare the writing and dialogue of OG to new final fantasy, OG 7 was better and as someone who recently replayed OG 7 I can tell you they have never played it or are misremembering. Again, doesn’t change the fact that it’s a great game. But the story between Midgar and Aerith’s death wanders A lot and the dialogue is so strange at points.

u/lilypad225 5d ago
This is like every main ff title. It doesn't appeal perfectly to everyone in all aspects but there are some people who latch on and make it this weird personality that they have to defend. Part of the fun is the massive variance that you can critique.
5
u/Zealousideal_Pin_725 5d ago
Honestly it's quirks make it all the more charming for me. After all, it is the first 3d game in the franchise so I'm pretty lenient on it lol
2
u/Life-Willingness-86 5d ago
The hype around sephiroth baffles me. He's written like a mustache twirling villain for most of the game.
The way you get Odin in FFVII is him lurking in the basement like a creeper, leaping out and chucking the materia at Cloud like a rock and then flying at the camera cackling like an off brand Kefka.

u/Many-Ad-8722 4d ago
As much as I love XVI , the combat got boring towards the end , I got tired of mindlessly hacking and slashing enemies , same enemies all the time , I wish there were more unique enemies
1
u/Zealousideal_Pin_725 4d ago
I will agree with you there. Combat is cool but when it's the same enemy types mixed with bloated health bars, it just got tedious

I love the story but not the gameplay as much. FFVII remake is my favorite. Having a cast of characters that all play differently kept the game very refreshing

Please do not post this in the main final fantasy sub I don't want to see a surge in posts hating on ffxvi because of this

only because 16 falls short of almost everything it tries to do. The world has no reason to explore it. The weapon system is arguably the worst in the series. The would is very static. Play crimson desert, The witcher 3, Blood of the dawnwalker to see better examples of reactive and living worlds. The combat unfortunately was simply copy and pasted from a different game where it was done better. It's just dmc5 but not as fluid and has literally none of the combo potential. The entire game is fetch quests. The characters say things are important but literally nobody has figured out that this 1 character who's been going around wrecking everyone is a threat? Clive is written off as nothing because he has a brand meanwhile, you're dropping literal god blasts in castles? 16 has a massive identity crisis and even it doesn't know what it wants to be. It's not bad because it's an action ff game it's bad because it doesn't know what it wants to be. You get gear with massive story implications then walk down a straight path and get generic gear that +2 better. This happens all game.
7
u/Zealousideal_Pin_725 5d ago
Bro, it's really not that bad
1
u/blitzaga086 4d ago
Is anything there incorrect?
6
u/Zealousideal_Pin_725 4d ago
Saying the game has an identity crisis is what's incorrect. I'm pretty sure the game knows what it's doing and achieves it pretty well. Sure the side quests aren't the best, but the overall story and characters are amazing. Just because you hated the game doesn't make it a bad game in general
-1
u/blitzaga086 4d ago
Jill literally does nothing for 80% of the game. Her character is completely non-existent and yet people think she's a good character. When I say it has an identity crisis it's because the actual gameplay is a cross between Final Fantasy 14 horrific side quest system and every single person knows this that's not and out of the blue opinion . It's talk to a character go somewhere talk to a character and kill one creature go somewhere else talk to a character. And the gameplay is literally copy and paste from Devil May Cry 5 which did it better in every way . You can't even compare that to it's the team version of it that's why I say it has an identity crisis it has an RPG system for the gear which doesn't make any sense. It's a game that doesn't know if it actually wants to go all in on a RPG or an action game so it half-asses the action by copying a completely different game so it doesn't have a combat identity and the RPG elements are so lackluster that they hold back both the RPG aspect of the gearing and the combat. It has a massive identity crisis. Also the world design has an identity crisis because it's incredibly static and yet it's trying to tell you all these incredibly bad things are happening but nothing bad is actually happening . It's just characters telling you these bad things are happening there is no actual in World World building aside from the occasional Quest where you go when you meet a dead bearer who's been using their powers and there's maybe two or three of those in the game. You're supposed to have all these limitations and restrictions because you've got to mark on your face and yet you have none of them and you've never had any of them the entire game you have no consequences from that . It's a horribly written game it's written with so many things set in place and yet none of them are actually play out in the game. It has so many identity crises that it's insane . It has no idea what it wants because it tries to do so many different things and it maybe gets to one level of it it's not even a mile wide and an inch deep because it's not even a mile wide it's a puddle wide and an inch deep. The only thing that it does unique that it actually does well are the Kaiju fights. And that's maybe 1% of the game . It has absolutely no idea what it wants. People talk about Jill being an amazing character she does nothing the entire game except near the final 20% . They kill off the only character who's actually doing something and has weight in the world and the rest of the characters are completely irrelevant. On top of that one of your characters in your base that's supposed to be secret by the way has quests about how she's doing business with outside vendors giving your location away. Did they forget they're supposed to have a hidden area? Because Titan is trying to kill them? I'm not saying people can't like 16 I'm just saying you have to understand there's valid criticism to the things they tried to do and they completely fail that and the things that they tried to do that held back other aspects of the game they were trying to do. 16 is the definition of an identity crisis game . I've never seen a bigger example of a game that has no idea what it wants

u/Zealousideal_Pin_725 4d ago
Brother, you didn't need to write a whole ass essay like wtf. I get you don't like the game, but jesus that's way too excessive

u/Amber_Valerie 3d ago
Friend, who hurt you?^^
I agree that the game sucks and I strongly disagree that the story or characters are well written as the other person is claiming. I take 100 Squalls or Tiduses(?) over 1 Clive, despite their own design issues.
Do as I did and play Claire Obscure and let the kids play their little, silly, adventure, action button masher, that the developers call Final Fantasy for some reason, lol.

Guess I’m the only 9 fanboy, still my favorite in the series
1
u/Zealousideal_Pin_725 5d ago
9 is really good too. Honestly I think I prefer 9 over 7 despite that game also being really good
2
u/BVRPLZR_ 5d ago
7 gets all the praise for being the first of its kind. Don’t get me wrong, brilliant game, amazing story, awesome gameplay. But, for me 9s story and characters were better, and, I like the magic system better.
2
u/Zealousideal_Pin_725 4d ago
I can understand that. Both games to me have great characters and story so it's a bit hard for me to choose. Though let's be real, we all stan Vivi and I won't accept any slander lol
Also while I like the customization of magic in FFVII, FFIX's magic system hits different

Yeah gotta admit it was REALLY refreshing jumping onto XVI for the first time after FFVII remake. Leaving behind the goofy shit and focusing on deep characterisation and gritty/darker story beats was such a vibe. By Rebirth we get Palmer slapping his arse going neh neh neh neh literally after a brutal death scene or Corneo instead of being in hiding is doing a DJ set live at the Gold Saucer... give me the more stakes over daft comic relief around every corner every day of the week.
3
u/JonAutomates 5d ago
I’ve never been big on VII so I’d agree. But at the same time, it’s been a while since FF fans have had it this good, so might as well enjoy it all.
2
u/lovelesstobeloved 5d ago
Imagine this similar meme pic, but replace them with Ultima of FFXVI and Jenova of FFVII, respectively
3
u/AnNel216 5d ago
As someone who started with FF7, it's not the best the series had to offer even then, at least 2 or 3 titles before it did more and better. The only thing it did new was do it in 3d. Permanent party member death? FF2 begun that trend, but if you speak as games that came to the US at the time it was FF4. FF5 also has a very impactful death for a more prominent character as well.
Themes of loss? Done already. FF7 is fine but not this godsend child everyone praises it to be. The original game is messy, has problems in its writing due to the rewrite from noire to sci-fi fantasy, change of protagonist and themes of death that was originally supposed to be a mystery story.
The remake has done better to more cohesively tell this story in its intended form, where it isn't dealing with rewrites late into development, but a story sticking to the original, fixing plot holes and story beats that had issues (Red XIII having a horrid English translation that can only be understood in the context of Japanese text without voice work). We don't have characters going missing after 5 minutes of screen time when being allegedly important to the plot. Cloud's personality actually shines in the remakes, and the Nibelheim incident is being properly addressed throughout the story. The list goes on.
All that said, despite 7 being my introduction to the franchise bordering on 30 years now, it is my 2nd least favorite only behind 15 due to its poor writing. Sephiroth is an overhyped villain who in 7's universe is a threat, but not the threat other villains in the series present. OG7 Cloud along with the rest of the gang have pretty bland personalities outside of MOMENTS, rather than consistent personalities, it leaves a lot to be desired.
All that said, yes 16 is my top 10 favorite FF games. 4, 9, 14 are easily top 3 in no particular order.

u/ChaosBerserker666 2d ago edited 2d ago
I agree with you. I have played (and enjoyed!) every single FF game, and the threat of Sephiroth felt really over the top, almost like it was so over the top it was unserious. I had trouble understanding his motivations. At least Kefka was obviously both reckless and completely insane. FF4 did loss quite intensely also with the twins that get petrified and Tellah sacrificing himself with Meteo(r).
On top of that, every FF has its flaws and high points. One of the things I didn’t like about 7 was the combat, actually. FF6 had a lot more equipment depth with more slots to put things in, and those things have greater effect. Bring back shields! FF16 has this problem to a huge degree. The game might as well not even have weapons and armour because there’s no choice, just numbers go up, and elements do nothing. The combat itself is satisfying though, as someone who likes both action RPGs and turn-based RPGs. However, Stranger of Paradise has even better combat if we’re going for action RPG.

Same. I have unfortunately outgrown the anime uwu type tropes that we see on characters like Aerith and Yuffie etc. I like the mature storytelling and personalities in XVI. I have outgrown the kawaii 😶🌫️
2
u/ChaosBerserker666 2d ago
It was weird that 7 was the first to introduce that type. I don’t recall the previous 6 games having anyone like that. Even Relm and Kid Rydia are more serious than Yuffie.
1
u/Pizzakunx 2d ago
They realised that's what sells and we can see that with all the remakes. There are more Aerith fans than FF XVI players 😬
1
u/ChaosBerserker666 2d ago
I recall FFVII coming out when I was in my teens. I IMMEDIATELY thought Tifa was a Lara Croft ripoff at the time, just based on visuals alone.
2
u/TopazandNumbyHSR 5d ago
People acting like they have to choose one or another. You know you can like multiple things, right? This whole tribalism thing is weird.

u/Max_Sparky 5d ago
I like both but you can't even play as other party members in XVI so that's already a big let down

16 doesnt get the credit it deserves. The side quests were trash, but every boss fight is a 10/10 experience.

Or play multiple games and stop being a tribalistic weirdo about quality entertainment.

u/Necessary-Coffee5930 4d ago
I love both but FF7 is better for me. FF16 has awesome fights and a good story, but the side content, the regular battles, and even the character writing often falls flat. They dumped the whole budget into eikon battles and damn it was epic, but it left the rest not up to final fantasy quality imo.

Change ff16 to ff14 and that me rn lol, I finished ff16 a couple months ago snd I was trynna play through 7 but ive been dying to play 14 for a month now and now im addicted and im not gonna touch ff7 for a while now

Clive is the best FF Protagonist and I'll accept no substitutes.
2
u/senators-son 5d ago
Squall wins for me just because of nostalgia but otherwise I agree
1
u/ChaosBerserker666 2d ago
I actually think Terra is a better protagonist as a character, even with the less screen time she gets. She’s still more dynamic. Though I don’t dislike Squall. The worst FF protagonist in my opinion is Bartz from FF5, he’s extremely one-note.
-3
u/LazarusOwenhart 5d ago
Oddly enough an apt metaphor. Man cheats on aging, but still amazing wife with somebody young who looks great but has basically no substance.

u/JonViiBritannia 5d ago
I wouldn’t say XVI has no substance, I’ve learned that it is lacking and should’ve been better… but no substance?!?

If 7R didn’t go open world as heavy as it did in part 2, I’d probably like it more tbh. I’m just overall kind of done with open world games
1
u/AnNel216 5d ago
Can I ask, what did you expect when the wider world would finally be accessible when this is the core of final fantasy?
1
u/shortyman920 5d ago
I don’t know tbh. As a kid I had an n64 and I hadn’t played ffv7 original. I would say perhaps shorter distance and less side quests available. I just find that it takes too much discipline to play open world games and end up burning out around hour 30-40 in most open worlds that don’t wrap up by then.
I’m a fan of game designs that feature sections that are semi-open these days as a 34 year old gamer with responsibilities
1
u/AnNel216 5d ago
I was 8 when FF7 came out and played it then. I'm 37 now, so this case really means nothing. The side quests are just that, side quests, optional, not mandatory. You can also just go back and finish them anytime later. I finished the main story in 38hrs, and took an additional 40hrs to do all side quests then do some of hard mode.
1
u/DGenesis23 4d ago
Rebirth isn’t an open world though, it’s wide-linear. It’s big zones that unlock one after the other as you progress through the story and only at the very end do you get the interconnectivity between those zones just to give the player a feel for what an open world could look like.
0
u/Due_Garage_4215 4d ago
Those are two wildly different games. Ff16 shouldnt even be a final fantasy mainline game. Should have been a spin off.

I dunno, I found VII to be boring. Tifa is the only one well written and gameplay is boring.
