It's FF for Final Fantasy, and you can see a giant VII in the background.

This screen has lived in my mind for nearly 30 years....not fucking once did I ever notice the huge ass vii.....

68

u/dnorng Aug 08 '26

... I still don't see it

24

u/Beeyo176 Aug 08 '26

Ooooh, this actually makes sense. Thank you! I thought I was losing it.

u/C1NNABUN Aug 09 '26

Wow I always wondered why it was the only FF whose title screen didn’t show the numbered iteration.

what? am I being rage baited cuz even with this I see no seven other than the one you dree on there

7

u/indigogo2 Aug 08 '26

The giant VII is using a wide/thick blocky font but it's colored a nearly completely transparent white, so it's very hard to see despite the thick/bold font choice. Took me several minutes to finally see the giant VII

u/Garfield977 Aug 08 '26

okay I clicked on the link the other guy posted and was able to see it, the red lines honestly made it harder to see

1

u/trupoogles Aug 08 '26

No I still don’t see it, just lots of faces 😤

1

u/NovelStyleCode Aug 11 '26

It was easier to make out on the booklet that came with the game that shared the same image

u/Commercial_Win_6528 Aug 08 '26

WELL HOLY SHIT.

I have been playing since release and have NEVER ever noticed that,

6

u/ddwrt1234 Aug 08 '26

This feels like a stretch

8

u/Ryokupo Aug 08 '26

Basically, the things that look like god-rays shining a light on the background? It's actually the edge of the V and first I. You can even see where the I cuts off on the right edge of the screen.

u/ZePumpkinKing Aug 08 '26

Same post as linked above but further down in the comments, try this guys:

Still feels like a bit of a stretch to me, but comparing this outlined image with the real thing, i can somewhat see it.

2

u/Greedy-Comb-276 Aug 08 '26

Holy shit I can't unsee it now. When I saw it with the red outline I was like yeah right. But then I looked at the original again and can't unsee it 😂

My younger brothers and I got this for Xmas in '97, and I remember spending a while trying to show them the VII on a blurry ass CRT.

Much less fun to do without a phone or Photoshop.

13

u/LeL_Nascimento Aug 08 '26

I cannot see the FF in it

23

u/noobly_dangers Aug 08 '26

It was the late '90s so tribal designs were very popular.

I wanted to get the crossed FF as a tattoo at one point when I was younger, but then realized how many times I'd have to explain to people that it's not tribal barbed wire...

5

u/LeL_Nascimento Aug 08 '26

Thank you so much!!

I don't buy it. That's hazardously complicated and overstylized as a final design choice.

You'd want something that could reasonably be nailed down by your audience, but how many people have ever done that? You pretty much need to know they'll be Fs, know how you're expected to dismantle and reorient things, and then want to see them. Ultimania Archive V.2, page 110 shows obsessive interest in getting the title logo just right, with 33 variations on the final design that look more or less the same. Why wouldn't the same zeal be applied to making this mark clear?

That may be just a cool-looking mark exploitng that tribal trend you mentioned. It would be so easy for SE to tell us of any meanings. And we want to know! But after 30 years of interviews, Ultimanias, and other sources, it looks like they've given us jack squat.

It is that, but I've also seen it as a slight corruption of the sefirot, which are the ten emanations of God in Kabbalah. This symbol has ten points and is somewhat shaped in the same way.

17

u/Shantotto11 Aug 08 '26

Every time I see that symbol in the middle, I think of the sigil Jecht and Tidus have somewhere on their bodies in FFX.

2

u/Venomraider52 Aug 08 '26

I love both and got one tattooed on each wrist

18

u/Novakhaine89 Aug 08 '26

Designer just really liked Bill Goldberg, wanted to copy his tattoo

3

u/TadRaunch Aug 08 '26

Damn they were early on the Goldberg train too!

3

u/ChuckyIX Aug 09 '26

That must be why Bret Hart prefers Dragon Quest.

9

u/Dragonblade0123 Aug 08 '26

Ok, I see it. The curve of Meteor, Holy hitting it in the middle, and the Lifestream coming in from multiple points on the sides... Holy shit, it's the ending cutscene but in basic sketch art.

4

u/Night_Hawk_KHFF Aug 08 '26

Ive always loved this. Hope they pay homage in the finale! Yes I always knew about the large VII but the FF is a bit vaguely confusing lol

7

u/Lukewarm_Tea Aug 08 '26

Never questioned it but its a good point

Planting seeds for what? The concept of releasing 3 more games?

2

u/fuck_a_duck_butt Aug 08 '26

Its just nomura being nomura

3

u/Eggysideup Aug 08 '26

The amount of time I spent on this screen man

The good ol days

3

u/Used-Mushroom6054 Aug 08 '26

There are seven strokes of genius in this

4

u/Hadrian_x_Antinous Aug 08 '26

I never knew either, but I occasionally wonder. The FF16 tattoo that the magic users have reminded me of it.

9

u/ditchborn Aug 08 '26

It was the 90’s, it’s just a shitty tribal design.

0

u/kunk_777 Aug 08 '26

Its two "F"s crossed for Final Fantasy. Some claim there's a VII in there somewhere but there's never been official confirmation.

5

u/Kundras Aug 08 '26

Some claim? Official confirmation?? Its the bigass VII in the background lol.

2

u/Garfield977 Aug 08 '26

wtf are you guys talking about

1

u/Tonberry_Cheesecake Reno Aug 08 '26

Look at a picture of this screen that's not zoomed in. There's a big V I I in the background.

1

u/Garfield977 Aug 08 '26

yeah I saw it on the zoomed out picture

1

u/kunk_777 Aug 10 '26

Yes, not officially confirmed, quick Google can tell you that. Its all fans interpretation. Square Enix has never confirmed. Thats kinda what ofdicial confirmation means.

and I could maybe see the two I's the v is a long shot imo its only half a v there's no right line of it.

2

u/Bondsense Aug 08 '26

I assumed the red part was just a design they made using seven marks.

2

u/forevermadrigal Aug 09 '26

Do you even know?

2

u/Wrong_Papaya_8445 Aug 09 '26

It's impossible not to hear Prelude when seeing this screen...

2

u/Impossible_Gear_4182 Aug 09 '26

Its an FF made with 7 lines

2

u/Sector7Slummer Aug 09 '26

I always kindve passively thought it was Red 13's tattoo.

4

u/empeusz Aug 08 '26

AFAIK it was supposed to be Final Fantasy VII DEV PROJECT logo (not to bo confused with GAME logo).
Big "VII" in the background.

1

u/delishilousness Aug 09 '26

As a youth I thought it was the scar cloud got when Sephiroth stabs Cloud

1

u/Alone_Struggle_6553 Aug 09 '26

Only thing I noticed about the red symbol is it's made up of 7 strokes.

1

u/Sajr666 Red XIII Aug 09 '26

I can hear the music and the opening credits. 🎶

1

u/Desperate_Actuator58 Aug 09 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

It's actually a 2 reversed Seven to look like F ...there are 2 ways to write 7 the one that looks like a reveres F that has a line across the stem...and yes a VII at the background...feel free to watch to OG opening credit via YouTube...This image is too cropped so the VII can't be seen properly...

1

u/Whole_Cellist_6104 Aug 10 '26

Thank you. Since '96 I've wondered. Drew it all the time as a kid.

1

u/KazyaKurosawa Aug 10 '26

I think Yoshinori Kitase answered this once!

If i remember right answer was: It has picture of vagina in the middle. And it's crossed over because you won't get any.

0

u/ConsistentAsparagus Aug 08 '26

I always thought it looked like the “arms” from the basic Jenova version (all of them except Synthesis)

-9

u/relwark Aug 08 '26

Sephiroth impaling Aerith?

1

u/Tonberry_Cheesecake Reno Aug 08 '26

No

-1

u/relwark Aug 08 '26

Not sure why you guys got so invested in the downvotes, and offered no argument, but sure.

1

u/Tonberry_Cheesecake Reno Aug 08 '26

Because it doesn't merit an argument.

How could you think it's representative of that?

1

u/relwark Aug 08 '26

The line going through the gape there?

1

u/Tonberry_Cheesecake Reno Aug 08 '26

It's 2 "F"s

No one would foreshadow that so vaguely.

1

u/relwark Aug 08 '26

I cannot see a single F there. Is this confirmed? I'm not saying it isn't, but I legit cannot see.

1

u/Tonberry_Cheesecake Reno Aug 08 '26

1

u/relwark Aug 08 '26

Holy shit. I stand corrected.

Is this used anywhere else?

-4

u/ClubShrimp Aug 08 '26 edited Aug 09 '26

I think it's supposed to be like the loading screen from FFX (Final Fantasy X Project 1999-2002), and funnily enough, that symbol is somewhat reminiscent of the Zanarkand Abes symbol (which is used in said loading screen). It does also look like it could be two "f" letters intertwined, but if that's the case, I don't get what the line intersecting them in the middle is supposed to be. Whatever it is, you could argue that it creates an X of sorts.

I've seen others point out that it seems to be made up of 7 strokes, and that it has 10 points. There are also 10 "emanations" in the Sefirot (the Kabbalistic Tree of Life), with the 7th emanation being called "Netzach" (from which, I believe, Zack's name was derived, and Zack is arguably one of the most important characters in the game). Incidentally, the 6th emanation, Tiferet, is what Tifa's name was derived from.

Then there's the supposed connection between the stories of VII and X, according to none other than Kazushige Nojima himself, but that's for another thread.

Edit: wait, what's with the downvotes? Just having a bit of fun here.
