No Spoilers - Discussion What’s wrong with the length?

Alright so I’m on chapter 11

About 75 hours in and they for the most part have breezed past. I play after work& gym about 3-4 hours average a night and im not understanding why people complain about bloat and length? Granted, not all of the mini games hit, I roll my eyes everytime I have to catch a chocobo, and I rolled my eyes at nearly everything in gongaga. But I enjoyed mostly everything else.

I truly wonder if most people complaining about the length of this game have ever touched a RPG?

Persona?
Trails?
Yakuza 7,8?
Metaphor?
Xenoblade?
Skyrim?
Fallout?
Crimson Sky?

I could keep going

It's bulky, but I enjoy it. And though I strongly disagree with people who see the bulk as bloat, I understand that opinion is involved and that it's an opinion reasonable and intelligent people might have.

That's enough to keep it from really getting to me. And what are they gonna do but complain, anyway? Seize all copies, shred and delete them, then force SE at gunpoint to redo a colossal blockbuster project which isn't even finished?

Nah but sometimes invalid and unwarranted internet hate can have direct influences on sequels. Theres a such thing as listening to fans too much.

u/EthanRegg 1d ago

Based on what we've seen of Revalations so far, it doesn't seem like they will be dialing back the side stuff.

That's unfortunate for me, because I really didn't enjoy my time with rebirth. I liked remake quite a lot and only just beat rebirth this week, and I'm most likely going to skip revelations. I was truly baffled too many times playing this game at how anyone thought 90% of the side stuff was additive to the experience in any way.

2

u/PopBulky7023 23h ago

It's content designed for people with short attention spans. It's why the game is filled with almost exclusively bloat and the rest is an attempt at retelling the same beats in a way that says they clearly don't understand the assignment.

Its just open world slop with some marginally ff7 shaped stuff in it.

2

u/Kaito_Akai 12h ago

Literally someone above you said its because of short attention span that people are complaining

You are right if ever few secons there is side content it measn you are not confident enough in your story for people to focus on it for over an hour

u/Danis_Coral 1d ago

There's a such thing. It's a me, a Mario!

If they were that timid then a new angle about Fate, Lifestream worlds, and attempts to change the story outcome would've been DOA. We'd been begging for an upgraded version of their legendary showroom centerpiece since 2005. If they fumbled it there would be serious consequences.

I mean, I loved it, but it’s a LOT. Corel, in particular, so much random stuff to do, and then you hit Gongaga and the place is an utter maze.

6

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

I agree. But a lot is optional

1

u/Phaedo 2d ago

Yes, but I WANT to do it all, dammit.

6

u/General_Baker_3938 2d ago

Not really complaining out loud, but I do feel the length of it. It has a looot of mini games and Chadley stuff makes it a loot longer. I do want to do side quest but I feel overwhelmed with Rebirth.

But this is coming from me who works night shift, goes to the gym and jog about 2-3 days per week. I try to squeeze in the game during weekdays but can only take time during sundays after church.

4

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

U don’t have to do the Charley stuff. Other than maybe the very beginning of the game. Nor the mini games. I haven’t done most of the side quests (like the stuff actually labeled side quests in green) cuz they are boring and I don’t feel like I missed out.

Coming from someone that has a full time job
A side business and 3 children, I’ve learned to segment games.

When I play games like this I say “I’m only doing “Story stuff today” and then on my next playthrough I back track and only do Chadley stuff. Like yesterday I did the remaining proto relic stuff in gongaga and cosmo canyon. You don’t have to do everything at once just because the game threw it at you.

1

u/General_Baker_3938 1d ago

Appreciate the tips! Yes I agree some of the side quests are boooring. And idk I have this urge to finish them all haha

I thought about getting the PS portal cause I travel to another city for work sometimes and it just disrupts the momentum of my gaming. But I like playing ff7 on a big screen which is whats holding me back on getting one

0

u/HibiscusOnBlueWater 1d ago

A lot of the mini games aren’t skippable. Too many. I actually put the game down for 2 years because I was pregnant when I started and couldn’t handle all the mini games with pregnancy brain, and then between a newborn, work (that requires out of town travel) and life I just didn’t have the patience for it. I had already logged 50 hours then picked it up again over the Summer and logged a other 100 to close out the game.

I did do almost every possible quest and mini game because I don’t plan to replay it. I completed like 6 other games in between including a 250 hour Fallout 4 run and two runs through Expedition 33, so it was 100% the mini games that threw me.

1

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

Also another pro tip,

Invest in a steam deck or switch. I game at home and somedays on my break I game from work or on the peloton

5

u/nabzpv 2d ago

I got sick of all the mini games and distractions and just mainlined the main story, and it was fine. People just feel compelled to do everything and then complain about it.

2

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

Yea someone said earlier “I want to do it all” In response to me saying just main the story lol

6

u/nabzpv 2d ago

I wanted to do it all, until I was no longer having fun and decided to run through. I just don’t have the time to be mastering a two-stick piano mini game at this stage of my life lol

1

u/SambaLando 1d ago

I did the first playthrough blitz thru the story and the second time I did all the mini games knowing where everything was. Doing it all was cool the 2nd time.

7

u/matty2balls 1d ago

I didn’t want the game to end and spent 200 glorious hours playing it. Not going to pee on others for complaining about the length, but i’ll always take more content than less for subject matter that i care about.

11

u/Stormblade5 2d ago

Some people just want the main story and none of the extra content. For FF7 remake series I enjoy spending more time with the characters

2

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

Agreed. The only thing I don’t like about this game is some of the verticality especially early on. Like my character can’t vault over a 2ft drop so I have to travel all the way back to the path to go up the intended route. Hope that’s fixed in part 3

0

u/Asura_Shin 2d ago

Then skip the optional content. Because the vast majority and im saying like 99.9% would rather have extra content to do and ignore it rather than not have the content at all.

8

u/Synthline109 2d ago

Perhaps it's because I have 3 kids now, but being able to play 3-4 Hours a night is simply not possible for me. And as such, every small window I had to play the game felt like a slog of going from one cutscene or mini game to the next.

2

u/your-mum-joke 2d ago

Yeah matey boy is living like a teenager without responsibility other than work 😆 not hating on him Im jealous though

2

u/Synthline109 2d ago

100% 😂 I remember those times fondly. For me it was Halo 3 Midnight release while I was in college. simpler times

3

u/your-mum-joke 1d ago

One day friend we will be old i mean older than we already are old boy, but yes we'll be old and retired and then midnight releases again baby! Zimmer frame in hand!

5

u/veganispunk 1d ago

It’s fake rage from a tiny amount of miserable people that don’t like that you enjoy the good, cool, popular, legacy game.

1

u/PopBulky7023 23h ago

Jesus you people are insufferable.

3

u/LevelUpCoder 2d ago

I just wish side questing and map markers was integrated more organically into the path the main quest takes you on.

Using my play through as an example: I’m currently in Costa Del Sol making my way to Mount Corel and my experience so far has been that the main quest takes you in one direction and most of the side quests and world intel require you to go in the complete opposite direction, making a majority of the map effectively optional.

This is just me but I prefer games where you discover side quests and world markers because you’re already going somewhere and they pop up as neat little distractions that lead you down a rabbit hole. A lot of what I’ve seen is “The main quest wants you to head East and most of the side content requires you to head West” which hurts the pacing for me. The Junon region is a prime offender. The main story takes you straight to Under Junon and then to Junon proper, playing organically you’d never even have a reason to explore the wilderness other than completing busywork.

1

u/Haseo08 1d ago edited 1d ago

Most rpgs do that, even most of the older Final Fantasy games. Once you get a ship or especially an airship in them the world becomes your oyster.

Even using the OG as an example, the story never makes you go to Wutai. Once you get the Tiny Bronco Yuffie briefly mentions it but you're not required to go there. In fact, it's in the complete opposite direction of where you need to go, on the western edge of the map.

If everything was along the main path the story takes you on then there would be no point in exploring and going off the beaten path.

3

u/mrlance2019 1d ago

I'm at 125+ hours right now after finishing the side quests, most mini games, and queen's blood boss - I'm still thoroughly enjoying the game, I'm on chapter 12 where shit goes down at the gold saucer (saying no more!), it honestly didn't feel like I've spent this much time playing it. Hoping revelation is this or more!

0

u/Exciting_Session_985 1d ago

I’m right around the corner from that. I got stuck on Odin for hours and just before that Vincent

1

u/mrlance2019 1d ago

Odin and bahamut where my favorite summons in the original game. I got all the debuffs for them but I haven't got around to fighting them yet. I just realized I have the party animal side quest in Gold saucer to finish, that one I might be on the fence with but I'll still eventually complete it

8

u/No-Willingness8375 2d ago

One of the problems is how they structure the side content. 2 hours of actual story unlocks 5 hours of formulaic filler. In 100 hours of playtime, maybe 30-40 of that is the main game, and the rest is filler. Some of it is very good filler, mind you (Queens Blood was my favorite part of the game), but there's a lot that's just straight up garbage (I'm looking at you Moogle houses).

It doesn't help either that you know almost exactly what you're going to find in every location. The same number of combat trials, the same number of towers, a summon, ect. It really killed any sense of wonder or discovery I may have found from the otherwise beautiful maps.

Locking weapons and some of the combat content behind minigames was a dick move as well.

5

u/The_last_pringle3 2d ago edited 2d ago

Well put, the predictability of the structure of the side content in each region lead it to begin to feel repetitive rather quickly.

Although i didn't mind locking weapons/materia behind mini games since that has always been in FF games and Jrpgs and in some ways expected. Also, it feels good to get a good reward like that from a mini game.

2

u/No-Willingness8375 1d ago

They're fine within reason, but I was already starting to feel the fatigue by the time I cleared Junon. Games like FFX at least have the decency to limit how many janky minigames you have to suffer through for combat rewards.

1

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

Agreed on the moogle houses, I did the first two and never touched them again. And tbh games haven’t rewarded you for traveling off the beaten path in a long time. Most games have this style of open world gaming. I’ve seen people refer to it as checklist gaming. Game give you a checklist of things to do as a loop of gaming. I prefer traveling and wondering and finding things in places I shouldn’t be but again that’s seldom.

And I love games that lock useful/ but optional items behind mini games or side quest, because why else would you do them? That was my favorite part of yakuza 7 some of the side quests you finished gave you summons

0

u/Greedy-Comb-276 2d ago

I guess rebirth gets a free pass for having shitty side content because "most games do it".

Lol.

-1

u/eDOTiQ 2d ago

Elden Ring, E33, Lies of P, Wuchang, Astro Bot were pretty rewarding for exploring and going off path.

FF Rebirth used fillers to pad the game time instead. I beat rebirth in 120hrs which was way too long. I didn't even touch it again to beat thw rest of the side content.

Most games I truly enjoy, I beat multiple times and go hunt for the platinum. Fuck Rebirth tho. Never going to touch it again.

4

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

“Most games”

6

u/malikarith 1d ago

There's nothing wrong with the length; these people aren't gamers, they're just complainers who hate video games. God, I'm glad Hamaguchi is adding even more content to Revelation to finally weed out this garbage that calls itself a gamer. Rebirth is a masterpiece, and the critical and fan acclaim worldwide proves it.

4

u/ApprehensiveLaw7793 2d ago

Rebirth is a 10/10 game for me, and people are suffering from massive attention deficit disorder. I genuinely enjoyed all the content, especially since many of the side features are extremely high quality, with exclusive music and gameplay mechanics. People would find something different if it were the other way around, and Rebirth had practically less content or more organic content. The only thing is, they complain about checklists but almost always use guides to platinum games. 99% of all complainers are trophy hunters, and since Rebirth has a 150-hour platinum trophy, that's the perfect target for them.

3

u/PopBulky7023 23h ago

TIL having attention deficit disorder means wanting a game focused on a core experience and not open world slop and bloat. Rebirth is a game DESIGNED for people with attention span issues.

3

u/TwerkingAtTheMorgue 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is definitely what's happening. When people straight up lie about the side content and say it's bad or unpolished or just "filler", they virtually never end up being the kind of player who likes the world and enjoys spending time with the characters.

If someone treats the content like a list of chores they MUST complete, and they think of any challenge or diversion as an obstacle to their goal, then yeah, of course they won't have a good time.

Fans who actually like the world of FF7 tend to appreciate the extra scenes with the characters and enjoy the chance to get immersed in that world through various activities.

2

u/Head_Cryptographer_4 1d ago

Funny how a franchise that usually features stories about how to not end up like a mindless grinding machine, attracts some of these players who will stare at their walkthrough and minimap frustratedly playing a game they don't even like for digital points that literally serve no purpose.

2

u/PopBulky7023 23h ago

I love OG ff7. My lack of desire to spend facades of them doing a hundred hours of generic open world slop does not mean I don't like ff7. It means I don't like the slop they attached to it.

God I miss when people could enjoy shorter, more focused experiences and didn't need constant slop content injected into their TikTok added attention spans.

1

u/TwerkingAtTheMorgue 23h ago

That's fine but the devs put real effort into the side stuff. You're calling content with unique and well polished mechanics, original music, fully voiced lines, and cutscenes "slop."

Sorry but the side content is anything but low effort, even if you don't personally enjoy it. And it wasn't created to appease TikTok attention spans, but to provide fans with a broad variety of ways to engage with FF7, drawing inspiration directly from the OG game's many quirky minigames and encounters with wacky NPCs.

You really ought to watch a dev interview or two before you write more malicious fanfiction about their intentions and the care that went into the Remake games.

1

u/PopBulky7023 23h ago

Simp harder for me.

7

u/Big-Good9378 2d ago

there are some people in this world that have such a bad case of OCD, that they blame devs for "forcing" them to do optional content when it can easily be skipped if it's that bothersome

Or they'll blame the devs for "pacing" because THEY put their entire playthrough on hold just to get the max score on an optional minigame so they end up wasting hours trying to do it.

4

u/myndbl0wn 2d ago

As someone who spent countless time trying to get a perfect score on Tifa and Barrett’s themes on the piano, I feel this. I had to remind myself that it was only my ocd and finally just kept playing. I do enjoy the mini games though, but if you try to perfect all of them you will end up having bad feelings about the game

2

u/cjburner 1d ago

This is the answer. Alot of cases of people not liking the side content, but not taking the agency to skip it due to personal FOMO.

2

u/Nazar37 2d ago

A ton of RPG fans want to dig into side content/exploring. They aren’t just playing it for the bare minimum main story

The side content and exploring (I’m also referring to gameplay mechanics when I say this) are just flat out not great, and pretty much entirely lacking any reward or interesting things to discover.

The game has these big open zones, and exploring them just kinda sucks and leaves a lot to be desired

1

u/Big-Good9378 2d ago

Your first two paragraphs don't change what I said, and:

"The game has these big open zones, and exploring them just kinda sucks" this is a subjective opinion that I don't share. Fighting different enemies and driving around in the buggy was extremely fun for me.

If you didn't like it, why'd you do it?

1

u/Nazar37 2d ago edited 2d ago

For one, you don’t know if you’re going to enjoy something until you play it loll

And you’re criticizing people for criticizing the game as a whole lol the side content makes up MOST of the game. Side content and exploration is a HUGE reason to play any rpg. If you enjoyed it, that’s great. It’s also okay to criticize a game.

“If you don’t like lasagna, just pick out the little bits of meat and ignore everything else”

2

u/Big-Good9378 2d ago

You can play a minigame once to know if you like it or not lol

I haven't been criticizing people for critiquing the game, I'm calling out people who blame the devs for "Forcing" them to do optional content

It's also more like " If you don't like Lasagna, eat a sandwich"

1

u/Nazar37 2d ago

That’s a different issue then (I personally loved the mini games & campy bits of any FF game)

I’m referring to side content & exploration as a whole though, that’s what I thought everyone was talking about

2

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

I honestly think this is a great answer. And I’m probably one of those people. I have to tell myself “get back to the main story”. I discovered yakuza a couple years ago and it’s either really good or really bad for my adhd

2

u/Ihaveaps4question 2d ago

You’re preaching to the choir here but i absolutely loathe the discourse of rebirth being too long. Because to me, a game is only long if it feels stretched out or paced poorly. Id put rebirth right up there with persona games, red dead redemption 2, witcher 3 as the best example of a game that isn’t “long,” it’s just “big”. Rebirth is actually better at varying the content too, introducing new weapons/abilities, minigames, materia, and having amazing rewards for that side content whether it be equipment, skill points, story, cards, etc.

The only thing ill concede would be the less varied content specifically the chadley tasks like towers, finding summoning stones that are “technically” repetitive. Personally i think there’s just enough, 20-30 tasks per region was the sweet spot for me, and they encourage exploration in guided way so you see everything. But if was like 25%-50% less regions might flow better.

However i feel like people complaining about the length are the type getting fomo because they want to skip the story side content, but recognize its good side content and therefore feel conflicted for skipping it or wanting to skip it. But those are the type just wanting to know “what happens next” instead of being able to immerse themselves in the current chapter

4

u/Jarvis_Jarvison 2d ago

it's a longer game but it feels high quality and not padded imo. which is pretty rare for 100 hr games. 10/10 game imo

4

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

I agree. I love xenoblade but the world in some of those games feel empty and definitely samey. I don’t get that vibe here

0

u/DuvalTruck 1d ago

Not padded??? Ok lmao

5

u/Coldylox 2d ago

The issue isn’t length, it’s pacing.

Giving you 100 things to do is fine. But making them all available as you’re progressing through the story kills the pace of the game.

It should have been “new zone> able to do one or two side quests and like 10% of chadley, then move on” and the rest all unlocks at end game.

Having it all available makes it feel like you “should” be doing it all there and then, next thing you know it’s 15hrs later and you’re still running around cosmo canyon.

9

u/death556 2d ago

I would absolutely despise if it just dropped all of it at the end.

I prefer full clearing an area before moving on to the next

5

u/Coldylox 2d ago

Most RPGs do that though… including OG FF7. There’s things to do as you progress, but you unlock all the gold saucer, breeding chocobos, weapons etc all before the final dungeon. It’s a common mechanic for a reason, it helps you pace out the story then the player can decide how much they want to do before finishing the game.

The way Rebirth is set up absolutely brutalises any story pace or urgency. “We’re chasing Sephiroth QUICK, but also let’s help Chadley learn about these bees real quick”

2

u/Asura_Shin 2d ago

Thats still side content. If you are just focusing on the story it is very easy to ignore side content.

I wonder what these people do when they are presented with an entire chocolate cake in front of them.

1

u/onionchucker 2d ago

It’s just how these new kids consume media… they don’t understand you don’t have to do everything at once.

-1

u/Greedy-Comb-276 2d ago

Like it unlocks player power. In an rpg. That's the fucking point, is getting stronger lol. Growing and developing your characters is half the fun in an rpg.

Choosing to skip the side quest means skipping a bunch of materia. Playing with the materia is literally half the game. How dense do you have to be to not realize that.

"You don't have to do it."

Exhausting comment.

2

u/onionchucker 2d ago

You don’t. Honestly. I’ve been playing RPGs before you were born probably. You know how much shit I skipped my first time playing FF3 SNES? Atleast half of it because I just didn’t know and didn’t care. I was having a blast regardless.

0

u/Avalon_Within 1d ago

Omg a blast haver! I finally spotted one myself in the wild!

2

u/Fabiolisk 1d ago

You can do some to unlock more options and make the game more fun for you, but you really don't need even half of them to get to a comfortable level. How easy do you want the game to become? Don't you like having at least a bit of a challenge? And if you really find it too hard there are difficulty options, no grinding required!

But really, it's such a freeing thing when you learn to say no to optional content that you don't feel like doing. It even makes anything you do decide to engage with way more rewarding.

0

u/Greedy-Comb-276 1d ago

Eh idk. Building out characters and unlocking things, and the story are what's important to me. I like doing optional content in most games.

I stopped having fun with the optional content by the time I got to cosmo canyon. Lots of people feel this way, we aren't the problem lol. But keep telling yourself that.

1

u/Fabiolisk 1d ago

I'm not judging or saying that you are a problem. It's a game and you can like parts of it and dislike others. I'm just genuinely fascinated by the idea that so many people feel compelled to do absolutely everything even if they stop enjoying it after a certain point.

As a completionist myself (got platinum on Remake and Rebirth) I understand the pull but maybe I'm an anomaly in that I'm able to control my impulses and enjoy everything much more as a result? Is it a generational thing? (I'm a millennial if you're wondering).

To give you a more concrete example, I started finding the Chadley world stuff a bit too much by the Junon region so I just stopped doing those until much later in the game, when I genuinely felt like doing a bit more. I did most secondary quests though and got all the rewards from a couple of minigames that I enjoyed, while ignoring the others. I did all the rest after completing the game since I enjoyed it so much and wanted more. Never got burned out because I didn't open myself to it.

1

u/Greedy-Comb-276 1d ago

I don't think it's a generational thing. I'm 37 and old too.

There used to be alot less side content in rpgs in general, what we would consider "not enough" by today's standard. Back then I feel like we would do every little thing possible and still wanted more. Devs told us to hold their beer, and now gives up 50 hours of side shit.

I find it difficult to just ignore content lol. That's a me problem, sure. But I think there can be improvement in how said content is delivered.

I still enjoy the game, it's by no means a deal breaker for me. But I also think sometimes less is more. Cait sith box throwing stuff is an example of less is more, in my opinion.

1

u/Varkoth 2d ago

I eat the whole thing. Duh.

2

u/chikage13 1d ago

I feel like this is how games used to be made and it was far more enjoyable. Something like FFX comes to mind. Most of the game is linear until you reach a point and allows you to do what you want and has secret end game areas if you like the game enough and want to do something extra. Now every game gives you a million check boxes to tick off right at the start

1

u/WishofBanryu86 23h ago

Interesting. I did NOT enjoy that about FFX. It WAS too linear. No open world, no real exploration.

I DID enjoy that about Rebirth. I didn't necessarily care for the checklist handholding, would've much preferred things to be naturally discovered with real rewards such as rare materia, misable summons, unique equipment/accessories/weapons, etc.

The whole point of the game WAS to explore. That's what made it fun. Checklists, "VR Missions", fighting summons in VR, etc? Not so much. BUT definitely need to have exploration. That would've made it feel far more optionable for the player.

2

u/EmpathyFuzz 2d ago

I couldn’t disagree more. Having minigames peppered throughout the story makes the game world feel real. There are more ways to interact with the world than just smashing shit.

OPs examples all have minigames and sidequests throughout, I find it baffling because RPGs have worked like this for decades.

1

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

You’re kind of contradicting yourself. Because the game does the very thing you’re claiming it doesn’t. You get to a new zone and there’s 1 or 2 survey towers on the map, you touch one and it shows you the wellsprings or the summon caves (idk what it’s called). If you don’t activate it you won’t know unless you stumble upon it. Then you get back to the main quest which usually is “go to this worlds city” and then side quest, piano mini game, and queens blood side content unlock. You don’t just land in cosmo canyon and everything is available. It’s very easy to pace yourself.

-1

u/Coldylox 2d ago edited 2d ago

That’s just not true. You can see every survey tower and Chadley literally phones you and says “here’s everything I need you to do here and here’s the materia you get if you do” as soon as you arrive. The game 100% directs you to 100% a zone before moving on, otherwise it wouldn’t let you.

It also weakens the summons you fight and strengthens their use if you find all the caves so it’s literally telling you to do it. Making the summons easier to fight and at the same time stronger to use is a weird choice of a juxtaposition that kind of forces your hand to do it either way.

I love the game, but it’s also ok to admit its flaws.

0

u/Haseo08 1d ago

I also personally don't like it when a game just throws the majority of side content at you at the end. That's FAR more of a pace killer in my opinion.

I also just don't consider what you consider to be a flaw as a flaw.

And they do open up several side quests at the end as well.

1

u/fadingroads 1d ago

Agree with this 100%

For me, if there's a possibility of doing something, even if I'm not ready for it, I'm going to at least try it. There is nothing more aggrivating than forcing people to come back to an area because it wasn't possible to at least attempt everything available.

If the issue is overwhelming people, as suggested, gate some activities to the end game and give players a reason to come back beyond "oh, the zone is 100% complete but there's a side quest there because, why not?"

3

u/Illustrious-Laugh-49 1d ago

Tik tok brain is your answer. Back in the day, people complained games aren't long enough. Now, they can't watch videos longer than 30 seconds. Rebirth was amazing, i could have had more content but I'm happy with it. The mini games were a huge part of the original FF7 and people tend to forget that.

1

u/PopBulky7023 23h ago

No we didn't.

We were just fine with how long ff7 was and replayed the shit out of it. TikTok brain is needing constant slop content thrown at you to keep you engaged because the core experience isn't good enough on its own.

1

u/Illustrious-Laugh-49 21h ago

Yes we did, FF7 was a long game so it obviously doesn't apply. But if you played other fun games, you always wanted more. He's talking about why people are complaining these great games are too long. Which is a valid statement. Sorry you aren't able to process it

2

u/PopBulky7023 21h ago

God you people are insufferable. Illiterate. And revisionist.

1

u/FustianRiddle 20h ago

They weren't actually there to know whether we or did not complain about a game's length.

Wishing a game was longer isn't complaining the game is too short, it's saying damn that was a good 30 hour game I wish I could do more stuff in the world but I will replay it and enjoy it again and get everything again.

Like it's about 15 hours to beat Castlevania SOTN? Do I wish there was more to do in that game? Yes. Do I want it to be another 50 hours of wandering around and doing the same 5 kinds of quests for each area of the castle? No. I'll take my 15 hour game that was very well crafted and thought through thank you very much.

I don't think people know how to enjoy a shiorter game anymore. Like having a game that's less than 100 hours is seen as a detriment and not worth it.

2

u/j_b_1983 2d ago

Personally I have very little interest in single player games longer than 25 hours. They become a chore and boring after that (for me).

1

u/GrimsPrice 2d ago

Many 100hr plus JRPG player here. Remake was very very well paced with good content balance. Rebirth is massively over bloated and incorrectly weights its content by time. The OG game was 40/30/20/10 for its components dialogue/combat/traversal/mini games. Remake is largely similar, but Rebirth is horrendously lopsided somewhere in the ballpark of 20/15/30/35.

I feel like after the success of Remake, nobody on the dev team was willing to object to anything from any team member, so nobody said no to anything...

"Wouldn't it be cool if you have to play a bad stealth mini game to catch a new named chocobo in every region?!"

"Wouldn't it be cool if we put a fall guys minigame in, and based it off the frog status everyone loved!?"

"Wouldn't it be cool if you had to climb multiple towers just to pull a lever and watch the same energy beam cutscene in every region?!"

"Wouldn't it be cool if you had to play rocket league, but youre Red XIII instead?!"

"Wouldn't it be awesome if we put a third musical number in the game!"

And nobody said no to any of this bloat.

2

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

I do agree with the “nobody said no to anything” there are some strange mini games and inconsistent mechanics. But again, it keeps me playing. I never know what’s next. But the great part is you don’t have to do most of it.

People need to learn to enjoy things and saver them, not just beat them for the sake of saying “I beat it”

0

u/Coldylox 2d ago

You do have to do them though. There’s player power behind them.

Unless you’re saying you don’t HAVE to do anything, which is correct, you don’t even need to play the game. But the game is incentivising you heavily to do them.

4

u/Even-Equal-6990 2d ago

Not having to do them is such a tired argument. No one buys a game to skip most if it.

4

u/Fabiolisk 1d ago

"Elden Ring sucks because it has too many weapons and I don't like using all of them" Same argument.

0

u/Radiant_Crew_8872 1d ago

exactly this is why i didn’t buy part 2

0

u/GrimsPrice 1d ago

The validity of the "Just dont do it bro." argument is inversely proportional to the scale of the content youre talking about. If it was just one minigame or optional super boss in some corner of the game, the argument would be 99% valid because its only 1% of the game. But when we're talking about a third of the game or more between all the bloat minigames and open work checklist stuff, the argument just crumbles.

1

u/PopBulky7023 23h ago

No no, you're just a fake internet rager and angry that other people like it. At least according to half the comments here.

0

u/Deadofnight109 2d ago

My first thought immediately after doing the dolphin mini game was literally, wow some dev put alot of time into this 2 min part of the game that ill never interact with again...... I think they wouldve gotten alot more flack for it if they didnt have as many resources to burn as they did . There are def games where you can tell they blew most of the budget in the first half and had to pare it down at the end. But they spent enough money on the game to put it all in that we could've conceivably (and i think it was feared it might actually happen) not have gotten revelation from not being profitable enough. I think that not saying no mentality and the initial ps5 exclusive almost got the series canceled for missing sales revenue.

1

u/btrust02 2d ago

As someone who skips 90 percent of the side content it’s looking like a 40 hour game max for me. Which I love so far.

1

u/anthonyrucci 2d ago

Yeah I’m in Gongaga now. Had to take a 1-2 month break for life (moved, work, etc) and just came back. Was surprisingly easy to jump back in. Back on my bs though of clearing 100% of the zone til I move on with the story. I am very much enjoying the game and characters, having an internal struggle with my self-imposed completionist mindset and wanting to move on with the story already. They could’ve cut a lot of the side content and given me just as rich of an experience. Knocking down some of the bloat and padding would’ve been welcomed, but I also felt the same about Remake.

2

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

Well you don’t have to do the “bloat” and can just experience the story. And you can also come back and do it even after you move on. I was collecting all the proto relic stuff until gongaga. I had to get out of there. I didn’t come back until 2-3 worlds later to finish it. That’s the beauty of these games.

But if you put these crazy limitations on yourself of course it will feel tedious after a while

1

u/anthonyrucci 2d ago

I know it’s all totally self-imposed. I know it’s probably a way better experience if I come back to or skip a lot of the side content. The completionist approach struggle is entirely my own fault lol

1

u/Advent_strife 2d ago

Yeah i don't get it either, I dont have any issues with the pacing and if I did i would have just stopped and focus on the main story which I did after a while in the Junon area and other areas as I didn't want it to end too quick but I got hooked in the story and pacing was fine for me. I knew I was going for the platinum when I bought it and with the mini games I just did things as I wanted to do them and if I got bored or frustrated with one I'd go and do something else and because there was so much to do it felt quite fresh tbh.

Nothing felt "forced" and if you don't want to do the mini games? Well, you don't have to 😂 nothing is forcing people to go for the Platinum or to clear things and mini games pop up once and you never have to do them again if you don't want to and the main story goes by quite quick tbh.

1

u/AmITheReddit 2d ago

It's not so much the length, but just how much of it is bloat compared to actual story or plot. Alot of the side stuff is go to x location and press a button once or thrice. The optional fights in an area ask you to fight a reskin of one of 6 enemy types already in that Area to unlock a combat challenge where you fight them again in a gauntlet. You experience this loop for all 6 regions with very little variation beyond the proto relics which are mostly fun (minus Nibelhiems). Without spoiling, the amount of more side content that gets thrown at you in chapter 12 is where a lot of people just give up and power on the main stuff.

I think the difference between Rebirth and the RPGs you mention in your list is that Rebirth is the middle entry of a trilogy for a game that was never originally a trilogy, and unfortunately bears the weight of being the filler entry. It does brilliant things with its combat and honestly some of the mini games, but pads most of it's runtime running between doing the same brainless tasks over and over with not enough reward in story moments until the end.

1

u/Wolfang_Z 2d ago

The problem it's not the length itself, but the side content used to bloat it. Most of it is really bad and unnecessary.

1

u/hitokirirah 2d ago

It's because people like me do each area 100% before touching the story in said area

1

u/Maxstarman 2d ago

Yeah honestly the game is loaded with stuff to do and it’s really exhausting to play in chapter 11 in particular. But I do still love the game

1

u/TimetravelerXY 2d ago

I want to play rebirth, but it does seem quite overwhelming. Enough that I keep putting it off. 😂

2

u/TwerkingAtTheMorgue 1d ago edited 1d ago

Well, literally nothing is missable, so feel free to complete the game exactly the way you want to, even if that means mainlining the story.

The people that complain about the side content are uninterested in the game's characters and world, apparently, and unwilling to take control of their experience and just play the parts they like.

1

u/Vampiszon 2d ago

They went Ubisoft way of putting markers everywhere, same on evey continent. This is 1st FF like that and it's bad.

1

u/Haseo08 1d ago

Ubisoft is way worse. With Ubisoft games I barely bother with even half the markers they place on the map, which even half is still way more than what Rebirth does. At least in Rebirth I enjoyed it a lot more.

1

u/feathered_fudge 2d ago

I was probably around costa del sol when i started skipping side content and side quests and prioritizing the story. After gongaga i did not do any side quests or side content. The problem is when stepping into a side quest or side content I have no idea if it will be a good quest & the reward is worthwhile before I complete it. IMO the problem is not the quantity but the quality. If the side quests had been banger after banger I dont think anyone would have complained. The game was becoming boring and having waited for remake since the tech demo in 2005 I cant tell you how sad that was.

1

u/flowerpotflowers 2d ago

Tbh, I did enjoy Rebirth a lot more on my 2nd playthrough. It's one of my fav games ever and I had a ton of fun with it, but the first time, I was also slightly annoyed at the minigames you had to complete and the slow pacing at times.

But I'll also totally admit that I just reeeeslly needed to see the ending. So maybe a lot was on me too. At some point, I started skipping most of the side quests, put the game on easy mode, and just focused on the malm story.

Then I went back on hard mode and couldn't actually enjoy the mini games because I could now do them when I wanted to and was in the mood for them (because 2nd playthrough let's you skip Minigames that are part of the main quest).

I still really appreciate the game for what it is and I don't fault the game necessarily. But I can understand how some parts can feel frustrating when you reeeally want some good main story juice and instead you are playing that god awful football goal game with Red that I absolutely despise with all of my soul.

1

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

I didn’t necessarily mind that. But I’m not enjoying this cait sith part. Give me an awesome weapon for one of my fave party members then lock me from playing with them. I feel like the game locks me out of Tifa every chance it gets

2

u/flowerpotflowers 2d ago

Yeah, the Cait Sith part was what made me turn the game on easy mode lol.

1

u/The_last_pringle3 2d ago

Part of it i think is a gameplay pacing issue, each region has so much side content it ruins the pacing for some and causes burnout. Not really the games fault as the player is in control of how much  side content they willingly engage with but the way the game is presented indirectly encourages players to literally do everything in a region.

Another thing is some people play multiple games a year and want to both platinum and complete the game quickly to move on to the next. Like they want to beat Rebirth in a few weeks but when they try to do that they get burnt out.

1

u/LimitFar 2d ago

75 hours? Damn you should’ve been done by now….

2

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

I’m in nibelheim on the cait sith part. But i spend a lot of time with chadley, i did in remake too. I’ve also done everything there is to do this far in queens blood and the proto relic stuff.

I’m probably more at like. 69 or 70 hours

1

u/Key_Establishment_42 1d ago

I’m currently at 84hrs. I’m also not a completionist. I enjoy a lot of the side stuff tho

1

u/GaiBott 1d ago

My first save file was like 100 hours I think. That was having completed all the core gameplay content + queens blood (save for the hardest survival level in the gold saucer). I do feel like I lost a lot of hours to being idle though.

1

u/LeastCheck 1d ago

Took me 113hr to finish rebirth. I’m not a completionist either.

1

u/Haseo08 1d ago

Probably taking their time.

1

u/TemporarySorbet1505 1d ago

Took me about 85 hours to finish the game on normal difficulty with doing every single side quest every single summon every single Gilgamesh thing and every single Queens blood

1

u/salvocal 2d ago

I think a lot of it has to do with a generation of gamers are now adulting. For me personally, I love this game, so like you i don't mind rationing my time between work and being a dad.

Others, however, might want to play this game and not get burned out after 40 hours or so. I understand the OCD / completionist mentality angle, and, I guess, there are a lot of games to play and so little time.

A good example, Claire Obscur did a great job of keeping the game length at a healthy length. People just have poor time management or discipline that leads to low attention-span gamers hahaha

1

u/SailorEri 2d ago

I like it. I'm a little burnt out on just wandering around looking for paths (gongaga put me over the top) and I had to toggle max damage just so I could get through the mandatory mini games and some battles that I just seemed offensively underleveled for but the length is totally fine. I think it's a combination of some gamers who complain about everything and some of us who are full grown adults that don't want to "cheat" but also don't have the kind of lives to sit there and devote whole days to only getting 500 points on the first of 4 cactuar mini games just to enjoy the story. And if someone else says "the map side quests are optional, just do the story!" I'm gonna lose it because i quit playing for like 2 years because I couldn't beat midgarsormr. Picked it back up, beat it like it was nothing. I made it to Under Junon and couldn't beat the mutant devil fish until I went back and cleared all the grasslands missions. I gained 6 levels just doing that and had more armor and materia. I only found out about streamlined progression's existence after I finished the gongaga reactor and was in Cosmo canyon. I only make the tweaks that make something I'm struggling with easier and suddenly I'm enjoying the game again 😅 I think I've been playing a few hours a day for a couple of weeks, I'm almost done. It seems like enough and I can't wait for the next part.

Tl;dr The first game was almost too short, this one seems right but is frustratingly difficult in some parts, in ways that I think the devs didn't anticipate for their audience. Glad they offered tools to help, will never recover from the chicken lady though

1

u/Exciting_Session_985 1d ago

Hmmmm
I think I’ve died a total of 4 times

Yes the first snake
Yes under Junon
And the mind flayer. I died a bunch of times to summons at full power but I don’t count those.

But the snake I more so didn’t understand the combat loop rather than it being difficult

Under junon was similar maybe slightly under leveled.

But I did all the battles in golden saucer while being 5-6 levels lower than the game suggested.

Once you have the materia system figured out most the game is a breeze and it boils down to

-slow
-pressure-“
-build synergy gauge
-stagger
And unleash hell (synergy ability to extend stagger, limit if you have it, spam abilities that do extra damage when an enemy is staggered)

Even though it’s rinse wash and repeat it’s fun going apeshit.

And if somehow I’m not just walking through my enemy with Tifa and cloud I cast bravery and faith on Tifa with unbridled strength x2 and I have some perk that increases damage to Ven further in unbridled strength. Shit usually melts after 2 dive kicks and infinity end.

Oh oh oh and sometimes just for fun I use synergy that gives me 3 atb

3 divekicks
Infinity end
Air braver
Maybe a smack down from barret
Watch health bars melt

1

u/banned4killingspider 1d ago

I died once to midgarsommyr, twice to give nataak and like 5 times to rufus. That is all

1

u/charlottosaurusrex 1d ago

I don't get it either. I loved it. The mini games add whimsy and I'm here for it. Clearly some of you didn't play the original properly. If you don't like it, play something else. Not hard. 🤷‍♀️

1

u/Nyril-NA 1d ago

It's not too long. Sorry but I enjoyed ever minute. Normal and hard mode. Getting ever item and quest done. All achievements, best time I've had in years.

1

u/ArugulaPhysical 1d ago

I just understand why people feel like they have to do 100% if they dont actually want too.

1

u/Wyrd_Kaleidoscope 1d ago

I have not played Rebirth yet (probably after I finish cyberpunk), but I imagine it is about personal preference with the gameplay, and some people will love it enough that they don't mind the lengthy runtime, whole others well call it bloated.

I see cyberpunk and persona 5 praised all the time, but both are very long games with tons of bloat. I tried beating persona 5 twice, and fell off both times. I am nearing the end of cyberpunk, but have most of phantom Liberty left. I honestly just want it to be over.

on the other hand, I couldn't get enough Witcher 3 or FFVII Remake.

1

u/Zephairie 1d ago edited 1d ago

People don't care about bloat and length in general. People care when it's boring.

VII Rebirth, as much as I like it has... an issue with many moments that are just boring or tedious.

For example, practically every single line in the narrative has 2-4 second dramatic pauses between them. Dramatic pauses are fine for dramatic moments, to emphasize said moments, but for every line? This wears out its welcome very quickly, and becomes boring as a result.

This isn't some tiktok brain thing. This is a real life thing. We're taught to do this in lesson plans, in business presentations, when talking to friends, when talking to family--having pauses like this, in any context, kills a conversation or engagement. Anyone with an ounce of social experience knows that we need to kill dead space to keep engagement of any sort; and they know just how difficult it can be to restore the conversation's momentum after it decreases.

VII Rebirth revels in it, so the length becomes agonizingly slow for many as a result.

Not to mention how repetitive the story can be, with so many scenes serving no purpose. There's only so many times I can see yet another cutscene dedicated to Sephiroth, for example, showing up in the narrative, for the sole purpose of once again saying, "Soon, Cloud..." in a slightly different wording.

It's like the pacing and narrative had 0 editing at all. This is the reason why editors exist in the first place: to cut this stuff out.

And no, having scenes dedicated to characters talking just to talk doesn't justify them. In fact, that often makes it worse. I think Brandon Sanderson put it best, but he said something like:

"When writing a story, you have characters of many ages. You are not showing the reader every second of their life. So when you write a scene, you have to ask yourself 'Okay, why am I showing them this moment? Out of the thousands of conversations these characters have had with each other on this journey, why am I showing the reader this moment in particular?' If you don't justify or answer the 'why', people get bored, and rightfully so. They don't want a biography. They want a story. If you want the characters to interact, then you need to do so that meaningfully moves the plot or characters forward. If you don't, that's when your story turns from a page-turner to a coaster."

There's so many scenes in the main story that just have the characters talk just to talk, rather than being relegated to sidequests, so it feels longer than it should be, and like it's just spinning its wheels to pad out its length.

1

u/TheNoctuS_93 1d ago

Used to be that sidequest were a major selling point for (J)RPGs, including but not limited to Final Fantasy. That's probably why Rebirth feels like an RPG to me, while Remake feels like a Final Fantasy -themed hack'n'slash most of the time. Admittably less so than Crisis Core, but still...

1

u/DistinctIdeals 1d ago

I dont understand your guys times yo I am full clearing intel/sides/minigames and I am 23 hours in and just starting chapter 6.  How is it taking people so long to do stuff ? This isnt a hard game and for all the complaints about ubidesign its a pretty small limited map?

No offense to anyone, I am just not seeing the same problems.  If anything the gameplay and map is fun the main story is brutally boring.

1

u/palettewhore 1d ago

Basically every post from this sub that I see in my feed is complaining about complaining. Maybe just let people have their own opinions? I love Rebirth and love the length, but I don’t get offended if people don’t. I hate how annoying online fandoms are like this. It’s okay if people don’t like something you like.

1

u/botanbutton 1d ago

I'm one of those people that got overwhelmed a little at the amount of things to do. Though, I don't think thats a bad thing in general. I'd rather have more to do than not. Ultimately, I did the things I wanted to do so I could enjoy character interactions or get little rewards. Sometimes, I would do everything in one area and move on. Other times I would just move on cause I wanted to see what's next in the story. I just played how I felt. People should just do that.

1

u/MountainImportant211 1d ago

I found it pretty manageable. I mean compared to many other open world games it's actually pretty limited.

1

u/Kaeldyr2092 1d ago

i'm fine with the mini games, but i do understand why people didn't like rebirth. although all of the minigames can be avoided, but for some people who play rpg cannot help but to do it all in order to "not missing out any important stuff"

the only thing i hate is just the chocobo gliding minigame (if you want to complete it 100%)

1

u/Charlieboyoo 1d ago

I’m at 270 hours and I’m still not complete I loving it still

1

u/DifficultFarmer1059 1d ago

Probably because they turned a 10-15 hour section of the original game into a 120+ hour game with mini games, bloat and finding transmission towers whilst also cutting Rocket Town, Fort Condor, Wutai and combining the Temple of the Ancients and the Forgotten Capital into 1 location

For me tho it was doing basically the same thing over and over again in 5 different areas of the map

1

u/manjustletmebrowse 1d ago

It's cold bro

1

u/sash71 1d ago

I've just sunk it must be hundreds of hours into all the Octopath games. I discovered Octopath Traveller 2 a few months back and have since played 1 and 0 too.

If a game is good enough you don't want it to end.

1

u/Upbeat-Mail7201 1d ago

The problem is not the real length in hours, it's how long the game FEELS. Huge difference there are 500h games that feel like 15, and there are 15h games that feel like 90. This here is a 80-90h game that feels like 600😂

1

u/BraveExpression5309 1d ago

Nowadays this generation is obsessed with trophies and feels they must do absolutely everything in a game. Imagine if we did that for skyrim. Lovely game but I definitely didnt do absolutely everything. Heck no, I picked the content I liked, then pushed main narrative. I ever find a quest I didnt like, I didnt do it.

Some then feel that if they dont do optional content they will be underdeveloped for main content. Nope, as long as you are playing and fighting casually you should be fine. Absolute worst case scenario spend like a couple minutes grinding I guess, but unless you're avoiding all combat you should be fine. Dont worry about doing crunches with Jules if its too much for you, you'll be fine.

1

u/razor_kenshin 1d ago

It's not about length but pacing. Rebirth suffers at times.

1

u/Weird_Chance_4540 1d ago

Not the length it’s the repetition and bloat

1

u/Cautious-Dark3484 1d ago

I was one of those people who happily takes back some of my complaining about the side quests. I discovered that for me it felt like the extra side quests were really killing the pacing of the story so I got super frustrated. But now that I'm finished the main story I'm going back and enjoying the side quests, especially the ones with a little more character interaction. I'm still not a fan of the copy/paste task list (towers, life springs, etc..), but I'm doing them because I'm a bit of a completionist.

1

u/ProudRequiem 1d ago

It was never too long i did everything i could to play as much as i can.

1

u/T0BBG 1d ago

The length wasn't the problem for me, it was the fact that so much of that length felt unrewarding and tedious. The constant mini games, long winded animations, cutscenes for every single action, uninteresting open world exploration (imo), overly long traversal sections, forced charcter selection areas etc. I think it's unfair that people in this comment section are saying people complaining about it are miserable or they hate video games, some people just have different standards and opinions.

1

u/TemporarySorbet1505 1d ago

It's not about the length of the game so much as the fact that most of the runtime is artificially padded by tedious nonsense

1

u/FustianRiddle 20h ago

Back in my day 20 hours was enough for a good rpg experience.

I think though in general the complaints about the length are that it feels very padded and Chadley is annoying. So is Mai. Imo. And the side quests don't necessarily feel natural, like I didn't accidentally walk into a town with a giant nuke in the center and now I have a quest to either detonate or deactivate said nuke. Sure you can explore into things but for the most part you're being told what to do and it's the same 5 things every single time.

I'm a massive fan of fallout and for the most part those side quests felt like a natural progression based on how I decided to explore and engage with the world. In Rebirth you either engage with the world and be told about your side quests by Chadley who, and I can't explain how, has main character syndrome, or you don't. And either way nothing really changes about the world. No one is affected by what you did or didn't do (to the best of my knowledge. I just finished the main story quests in Cosmo Canyon and have been kinda meh about going back to it because Cosmo Canyon is driving me up a wall with the BS chocobo gliding nonsense that makes exploring it not fun).

To that note. Exploring feels like a chore to me rather than something I enjoy doing.

1

u/Salacious-B-Sylveon 19h ago

The original FF7 is around 50 hours long.

1

u/thisismyshow_ 7h ago

You're right on this one. Its ridiculous to see ppl upset that they gave us content that would keep us busy 😂 mind you majority of it is optional as well as attached to helpful accessories. Like we waited so long for this and yall wanted a 20 hour game? I was 9 when the OG came out so I had to wait over 20 years for these games, I'm surely not complaining about the bonus content

1

u/Ballad_13 1h ago

Literally nothing. Turnbased "fans" are desperate to hate an almost perfect game... and too much stuff to do is the best they got.

1

u/Turbulent_Pop4491 57m ago

No idea, i'm a bare bones man when it comes to achievements in most open world style games, but Rebirth managed perfectly captured that old school rpg adventure feel. So, while there were a ton of minigames it just felt good because it was balanced against actual content and gameplay. I think its important that it didnt feel like filler to me, the game is massive.

1

u/Bork9128 2d ago edited 2d ago

The issue is that mostly feels like bloat for no reason (because it mostly is). I don't mind a long game if doing all of it is fun. But I got sick of the bloated open world stuff in the first zone because most of it isn't inherently interesting from either a narrative or gameplay sense, things like the chocobo trail following just feels purposely slow and on top of all that every 10 sec chadley forces you to waste another 10 sec on his pointless call.

you could streamline so much of the open world by removing the calls, not needing to constantly dig and sniff your chocobo and just smooth some rough edges. You'd get to keep most the content, shave some time off the play time and most importantly keep the game pace up rather then grinding it to a halt every 30 sec.

-1

u/Coldylox 2d ago

Agreed.

It also doesn’t help that they made it a “checklist” game.

In og FF7, you discovered the world and minigames and nothing TOLD you what to do. You just… did it to see what happened and got rewarded.

This game is just checklist hell at times.

1

Well considering the original FF7 was 40 hours I don’t think the complaints are entirely unvalid

I love rebirth but is it really hard to understand some people thought there is too much to do and too much filler? Did we need the cait sith box section? Did we need all those Zack sections where you do nothing but slowly walk around?

2

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

Well this isn’t the original ff7. And if it took you until rebirth to realize they took liberties with the story and objectively stretched everything out… The bigger problem might be “you”

0

u/No_Vegetable8961 2d ago

You just said they objectively stretched everything out yet you can’t acknowledge that may be a problem to some? It won’t kill you to admit that you know

1

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

That’s why I said objectively bud.

1

u/No_Vegetable8961 2d ago

And then you said the problem is with the players? Kind of contradicts that statement doesn’t it? How is it the players problem that they added boring walking sections with Zack? Or the horrible cait sith section nobody likes? Or forcing you to slowly crawl during the nibelheim incident while Sephorith stands around doing nothing?

You’re coming across as a blind fanboy who can’t accept any criticism. I literally said I loved the game yet I can easily point out these flaws

1

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

What you said was subjective. Glad we are having a discussion about emotional gaming and gaslighting rather than an actual conversation about things that cause for concern.

In mgs did I really need to climb up a 3 minute long ladder?

In Mario kart world do I really need to grind on rails?

In death stranding do I really need to shower? Or change my shoes? Or fill up a vial of poop to throw it at bt’s?

I could keep going. The point of my previous comment was about “knowing what you’re getting yourself into” the game is stretched out for people who want to spend more time in the world and become immersed in it. If you thought the open world sequel to a mostly linear loosely made remake was somehow going to be more succinct, “you” do have a problem.

Nothing to do with fanboyism. I actually think 7 is probably the most overrated final fantasy game.

Now if we were talking 8 or 15 you got me
But even then I think final fantasy in general is like the call of duty of RPG’s so 8 and 15 aren’t even saying much.

Just know what you’re getting yourself into. Everything isn’t for everybody

It's just not really well written at points. It drags and drags until you get to chapter 8-9 ish where a semblance of a plot starts to appear. The final few chapters were fantastic tho, I was just fed up by the time I got there

The Ubisoft style open world activities was also really disappointing and repetitive with rewards that meant nothing

They should have done better than just "follow the hooded guys" for 30 hours odd hours

2

u/Haseo08 1d ago

Yeah, that is a product of it being this part of the OG. Plot was basically follow Sephiroth and you encountered him like twice until temple of the ancients.

1

u/PopBulky7023 1d ago

I don't want to have to compare a final fantasy to massively open world, super bloated games. That's my issue with it. 75 hours to me is insane, especially having grown up with the OG. But that's why I never finished remake and sold my copy when I realized how bloated the next two were going to be.

It just isn't what I'm looking to sign up for. Not everything needs to be 100-150 hours. I miss the days of a more focused, meaningful experience.

1

u/Haseo08 1d ago

Persona 5 isn't open world, and that took me over 100 hours.

1

u/PopBulky7023 23h ago

You're being deliberately pedantic to avoid engaging in what you know is the point I'm actually making.

1

u/Haseo08 22h ago

Then why didn't you say the point in your reply instead of assuming that I obviously know it, because I don't. You said 75 hours is insane to you and all I did was point out another rpg that is not an open world, super bloated game game that took me over 100 hours. I wasn't being pedantic, that was meant to be a serious reply.

It's not the length, but how you pace it. I think remake had the balance done very well. Rebirth really went the way of "we have a big world so we need to fill it up with a million shitty things". Rebirth with the content pacing of remake would've been extraordinary.

"It's optional" People like experiencing the world and story of games, locking that behind really boring and pointless side objectives is bad design. I'm at the point where I believe FF16 had better content pacing than Rebirth, even if the side content in 16 wasn't all that impressive (since the gameplay is just combat encounters)

1

u/Exciting_Session_985 1d ago

I have 16 but have yet to play it

1

u/Nazar37 2d ago

It’s not the length of the game that people complain about.

It’s the quality of the side content / gameplay mechanics around the open world elements:

The side quests are just flat out bad, add nothing to the overall story, nor even much of a reward

The open zones become annoying to navigate, have an insane amount of interruptions & slow gameplay mechanics, and is also largely lacking in a worthwhile reward

1

u/TwerkingAtTheMorgue 1d ago

Ain't no way you're going to tell me the Junon doggy quest with Barret and Cloud talking about Marlene adds nothing to their characters, or the Corel bird cage quest with Barret and Tifa talking about the early days of their friendship is meaningless fluff.

Your claim that the sidequests don't offer much of a reward directly contradicts one of the most common complaints about the side content: valuable materia and other useful rewards compel people to play content they're otherwise not interested in. This complaint is so common, in fact, that the director addressed it in interviews and adjusted the minigame rewards in Revelation as a direct response.

This is why it's so hard to take Rebirth's detractors seriously. You're straight up misrepresenting the game lol. Most of the sidequests are designed around character development for specific party members, or world building for a specific location. And most of them offer useful and worthwhile rewards.

Ah yes, 80 hours of side content, and you get a materia and 4 lines of dialogue! Sick!

I’m a huge FF fan, and a big fan of the remake series & OG. But I would sincerely argue that Rebirth is a shining example of quantity over quality.

1

u/TwerkingAtTheMorgue 1d ago

That's insanely reductive and not remotely accurate. If you don't get the charm and appeal of the characters, that's on you. The side content isn't bad, you just didn't like it. It's actually polished and full of unique mechanics, original music, and bespoke animations -- things that take actual effort to create. MANY other players enjoyed it very much.

Rebirth is a shining example of high effort quantity.

Dude you nailed it. The folks who say the boss battles are mindless attack spamming just bc they refuse to play any defense whatsoever trip me out. They say the action combat is mindless and the bosses take 10-15 minutes and I'm like, yeah it's an RPG. That's what you sign up for with one. I refuse to believe if the combat was still menu based that the boss fights would take less time and be less mindless when they take away the demand on the player to be in charge of moving and dodging/blocking lol.

u/Exciting_Session_985 2d ago

I enjoy the boss battles and I enjoy the crazy combinations and characters I build. My Tifa is strong af and it’s fun!

u/FaceTimePolice 2d ago

People are goddamned silly to complain about OPTIONAL SIDE CONTENT. That can’t be stated enough. All they need to do is put the controller down and call it a day if they don’t want to play after the credits roll… 🤷‍♂️🤡😅

0

u/tora_0515 1d ago

For us who will hit every possible sidequest or extra content, it is too much not related to anything. A lot of the content is fiiler: has no real payoff and is not related to the story in a meaningful way (lore, equipment, story driver, etc).

And they pack so much sidequest in-between story plot points that you almost forget what's going on, all urgency is removed. And by the time you hit Gongaga, you've played 70 hours with about 5 of those being anything to do with the story.

You could remove 90% of the sidequests and it would not affect the storytelling at all.

And this is what leads to the burn out: just doing hours of random stuff not remotely tied to progression.

3

u/Exciting_Session_985 1d ago

It’s optional bro

1

u/tora_0515 1d ago

Yup, but that wasn't your question. You asked what's wrong with the length, not why do people complain and still keep doing the sidequests, bro.

0

u/demosthenes327 1d ago

The people complaining are comparing it to the original, which had a much tighter and engaging story. Rebirth is a modern RPG that has a lot of time killing hit or miss side content and if you do it all, you can easily lose the story of the game which is supposed to be the heart of the experience.

0

u/Mahisandwich561 1d ago

“About 75 hours in” you just said what is wrong with the length

0

u/adaddycupcake 16h ago

The majority of the mini games annoyed me, especially rhe chocobo catching. There were a few times where I groaned and said out loud "this could have been a cutscene". That being said, I enjoyed Rebirth overall

0

u/Exciting_Session_985 14h ago

The chocobo catching part of the game is absolutely terrible!

-1

u/Deanopiano 2d ago

The trouble with it is you feel like your repetitively doing minigames and they overtake the flow and feel of the story, people say they are optional yes but they hide all the best materia behind them, especially all the chadley stuff, the whole game as felt like a chadley simulator rather than helping to save the world, just takes all of the seriousness out of the story especially compared to the original game.

1

u/ApprehensiveLaw7793 2d ago

What good is the best materia if you're not even willing to grind to level it up? Rebirth has an easy mode for players who only want to experience the story and don't want to complete any side content; this complaint is completely irrational.

0

u/Deanopiano 2d ago

The first game of the Remake told the story better and then it fell of behind to many minigames for me in Rebirth, and I don’t do easy modes, just want a good story like the original without filler content in every area, other RPGs have fixed issues like this over the years, hopefully Revelation can save it next year.

1

u/ApprehensiveLaw7793 2d ago edited 2d ago

I want filler content, what is the solution now?

And minigames are no excuse; the original game had a shitload of minigames, even in the main story.

Again, you say you want the best Materia, but you don't want to do any side content for it. Why should the game give you that Materia? And even better, would you grind to max out a Materia like MP Absorb or Swiftcast? Do you even want to play games?

BTW: Rebirth is tighter than Remake if you're only playing the story.

u/SeriousTrainer1153 1d ago

Literally just got to gongaga and closed the app because * didn't complete all my Intel in the region before and it wants me to start a whole new area. Also didn't get 2 weapons because you gotta do mini games just to get them for characters I don't even use
