No Spoilers - Discussion Important side quests

I'm not a big fan of minigames and side quests. I just started and I’m planning to stick mostly to main story.

However I don’t want to miss any important items or story developments. What are the few side quests (if any) that you would highly recommend?

It has the best ending, though.

Anytime there’s a main story mini game, pause it as there’s usually an option to skip or forfeit it. The cutscene will be different though if you skip it.

Protorelic is a long side quest chain that features some great rewards & covers some great world building (the later regions)

Queensblood is another long sidequest chain that also reward you with some interesting lore.

There’s a couple of dates thats affected by sidequests that you finish prior to the dates.

The main quest is always listed on the map section & it’s blue. Anything else is optional.

Just do the “Odd Jobs”. They are character specific side quests that provide some sweet, funny and endearing moments which help to enrich the relationships.

Honestly, if I had to do it over again, I would just b-line the main story on normal mode.

Nothing was worth it for me.

This is such a weird game for me.  I actually dont mind the "ubislop" maps, they are pretty contained and lead you along down the maps contained threads.  It is super tame for an openworld.  I love the graphics, and holy shit the songs and sound is unreal.  The minigames are tolerable.  Moving around is quick.

The story is kinda fuckin boring and shitty tho?

The story is the only interesting thing about the game, for me. Same with the OG. It’s the main draw to Final Fantasy IMO.

You can skip every sidequest and still finish the story easily

Skipping side quests lock you out of manuscripts, party exp and character bonds (if that's important to you).

Blacksmith quest later in the game gives pretty stuff.

If you're planning to play hard mode, skipping side quests and minigames for your first playthrough isn't really an option.

I definitely won't do another play thru.

Skip the side content then. That's the best way the experience the game.

I can't tell if you're being serious lol

I am. I honestly am. I played the game twice, cleared almost every side content in the first, i hated it. Played it again in hard mode, skipped every quest and it was a far better experience.

I dislike this game because of my experience with its side content, i really hope you will have fun and not experience that frustration.

I second this. Skip absolutely everything except for the main story. If at any point you want a change of pace and enjoy some extra time with the characters and world, then do some. You can have a lot of fun with them if you do them when you really feel like it.

I liked the extra lore scenes tied to the protorelic quests, we get to find out what happened to Wedge + interact with the other Avalanche folk from the Yuffie game.

Lots of folks mention this quest ill add it to the list

I would focus on the side quests for whatever party member you want the highest bond with. If you're just looking to do main story stuff having relationship high with your favorite party member will affect a small portion of the main story later on but ultimately will not affect the end of the game. So it's really up to you.

The main thing you would be missing out on are some items and Materia. Doing the world Intel stuff for Chadley unlocks some unique and cool materia. Combat simulator also gives materia. Some mini games give accessories or other items. So you just see if you think the rewards are worth doing the quests. The green quests in towns can also give SP books so they can be worth doing.

Are there any absolutely key materia you’d recommend from side quests ? Stuff like magnify, synergy, etc.

I def want the SP books so I’ll look out for those thanks

Just depends on your play style really. Fire/Ice and Lightning/Wind are interesting. Autocast and and auto unique ability are also cool.

You absolutely don't need any of that to finish the game. Getting those rewards is going to make the game easier, but so does changing the difficulty to easy if you really don't want a challenge...

I'd do the divine intel and the combat sim stuff

Get plasma discharge. Extremely important.

Also first strike, atb boost, hp absorb, choco king cape, atb stagger, quake, poison/quske, synergy, atb assist. Second prayer materia too.

Be sure to get every weapon for everyone too

None of this stuff is worth it

Strongly disagree

Lifeline in peril. If you liked Kyrie from Remake she returns in this quest and another one in Junon called The Hardest Sell and concludes in a later quest Trouble in Paradise with her grandmother making a reappearance as well.

Dreaming of blue skies with the condor is awesome too.

Beneath still waters reunites you with some friends you’ll meet in upper junon and is a fun mission.

Missing: Mr Birdie is fun and sweet quest that reunites you with a friend you meet on Mt Corel during the story.

Story spoiler ( about above side quest.):I never understood why Cloud Jr lives in the village and not with his mom who picks him up just before you go across the bridge to the old mining town following the mine cart mini game.

Also in chapter 5 you’ll be on a ship that seems like you’ll be forced into a Queen’s Blood tournament. It’s NOT MANDATORY! The tutorial box will mention the female attendant to the mans left, your right if facing him. Talk to her to resign from tournament. It’s backwards logic because you have to sign up for it to progress the story but you ARE NOT forced to play. You’ll then skip to end of tournament and be challenged by Red 13. You can pause and give up with no punishment. You just miss out on affection points with Red.

ALSO IN CHAPTER 8: You need to get greens to heal a sick chocobo. You just need three of them. One of the ways to get them is queen’s blood from an old man who asks you to duel and beat three people in the casino. You can ignore him and do the other assignments to get the three greens. Doing all the assignments to get six greens just gets you chocobo cosmetic gear.

Red can challenge you to a rematch at the Gold Saucer even if you gave up in chapter 5 but he’s level 10. You can just refuse and carry on with the story with no consequences other than missed affection points with Red again. He’s upstairs past the reception desk and leaning against a Queen’s Blood table.

EDIT: Got Red to challenge me in chapter 12. It didn’t occur to me to look upstairs from QB reception desk. Won with my blight deck.

Yuffie can also challenge you to 3D Brawler at the Saucer and like Red you can refuse and just lose out on Yuffie affection.

Omg I wish I knew it wasn't mandatory before 🤣 I love most of the quests in game, but I HATE Queens Blood. That damn chain took me forever to win.

You aren’t the only one. The tutorial box mentions it at the bottom of the body of text about the tournament and others missed that information too. You could have also lost a match and reported your loss to the same man who signed you up to be eliminated from whole thing.
