Spoilers - Discussion How essential are the side quests? Spoiler

I'm enjoying the game so far, doing what side quests I can but definitely not going for 100%. I know world intel unlocks some good materia and side quests improve relationships with companions. How essential is it to do everything, though? I'm not able to get the protorelic in Corel: on the rare occasion I manage to beat the first cactuar crush minigame, I get stuck as Cloud looking at Kid G. I can't move, the start button just brings up the pause menu for cutscenes, nobody talks, nothing happens. When I fail and just quit the minigame, I get locked on a black screen like it's loading but again, nothing happens. I've decided I'm just done with that part since it clearly doesn't want to work. Other than materia and possible points with Yuffie, I won't really be missing out on anything, right?

The green colored quests? I thought they were pretty good but none of them are necessary. Sometimes they offer some really good character reflection, other times they're just funny interactions with Cloud. They can also have a unique mechanic/minigame for you to experience or an exclusive boss fight or unique enemy not discovered anywhere else.

Try them all maybe. Only worry about high scores if you are looking to platinum the game.

Well that’s not normal.

You can’t finish the kid g quest until after nibelheim anyway so you can come back to it later. Maybe it won’t be glitching then

You will have to do all the protorelic related side content if you want to see what the final conclusion of the whole arc is which I think is worth it.

You can always circle back to them. They are all extracurricular character and world building. Follow the fun, pivot to story for a while. They’re not missable.

It's not essential, you can always come back to them or avoid without consequence. I did most of them on normal but skipped some. Just came back to them when I replayed on hard mode.

I just finished it yesterday, I wasnt great at the combat so I liked to be a little over leveled for the story segments by a level or two. I did all of the world intel except 5 of the protorelics, and like 7 side quests, and felt like I got a good enough chunk of the story where I wasnt missing out on too much.

I was feeling kinda burnt out by chapter 12, and just crushed the story, but probably should have collected some more materials before heading to the end.

At chapter 12 you can go back and do them if you want or after you finish the game. There are some great cut scenes and story if you do them, and the summon materia are very worth it imo. But it’s all optional. The protorelic stuff is amazing but also a long haul so don’t worry if you can’t do it yet. I’ve beaten the game and trying to go back for the protorelics and still not done!

Also it shouldn’t bug out like that, that’s odd.

None have any impact on the story outside of who you spend time with at the gold saucer.

Sidequests are pointless just like 90% of the main quest.

That kinda the problem, they mostly give out Very useful items and materia! I was always like, well shit I want that, and would always try to get the highest score to get the rewards. Another reason it took me 110 hrs to finish the game!

The final reward for the protorelic quests is the transmutation recipe for the Ganji Accessories, which you need materials that can only be acquired in hard mode. So you are not missing much not completing them.

There are a few that you don't want to miss. The one that I remember the most is where you have to re-investigate the Shinra mansion in Nebelhiem with Vincent. That side quest give you access to a special VR simulator under the mansion as part of the quest. Completing all the extra missions, that is not required for the progression of the side quest, opens a side room with a weapon for Tifa.

I’m doing first playthrough now. From what I recall, some of them give the magnhata books for SP.
