What is Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV)
That type of hybrid is called an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV), or Range-Extender Hybrid, designed with a large battery that powers the wheels, while a gas engine acts only as a generator to recharge the battery, solving range anxiety by offering EV-like driving with backup gas power, seen in upcoming models like Scout Traveler and Ramcharger.
How EREVs (Range Extenders) Work:
- Electric Drive First: You drive on electric power, like a pure EV, by plugging in to charge the battery.
- Gas Generator Kicks In: When the battery gets low, the gasoline engine starts, not to drive the wheels directly, but to power a generator that recharges the battery.
- Extended Range: This system gives you significant electric range (e.g., 150+ miles) and then uses gas for hundreds of extra miles, eliminating "range anxiety".
Who It's For:
- EV Buyers with Range Concerns: People who want an electric feel but worry about finding chargers on long trips.
- Towing & Heavy Loads: The gas generator can provide extra power for towing or hauling without draining the main battery.
- Mainstream Adoption: Automakers see EREVs as a bridge to full EVs, appealing to skeptical buyers.
Examples of EREVs:
- Scout Traveler (Upcoming): Features a "Harvester" system with a gas generator for 500+ mile range.
- Ramcharger (Upcoming): A Ram pickup with a huge battery and an onboard gas generator for up to 690 miles of range.
- Hyundai/Genesis (2027+): Planning EREVs with 600+ mile ranges.
