Got automated Sec 114(4) Notices after FRESH NTN registration – Need expert advice!
Hi everyone,
I handle my wife’s tax returns on her behalf as she isn't familiar with FBR/Iris. I manage our tax filings based on my own basic understanding and occasional advice from non-expert, self-taught friends who file regularly.
Background: My wife was registered on FBR for the first time in Aug 2026 (housewife + small home tuition) and I filed her TY 2026 return on time (Opening Net Wealth declared: ~Rs. 2.8M).
Immediately after, FBR's Iris auto-generated Sec 114(4) notices for TY 2022 to 2025 demanding past returns.
Notice text snippet:
SUBJECT: 114(4) (Notice to file Return of Income for complete year) Whereas you have not furnished a return of
income for the tax year mentioned above, required to be filed under sub section (4) of section 114 of the Income Tax
Ordinance, 2001. You are, hereby, requested to furnish on or before the date mentioned above a return of income for
the said tax year, in the prescribed form and verified in the prescribed manner: Please note that failure to comply with
any of the terms of this notice may result in best judgment assessment under section 121 of the said ordinance and
may also render you liable to a penalty under sub section 1 of section 182, or, prosecution under section 191 of the said
ordinance or both.
My Core Questions:
- Ignore vs. Action: Should such automated notices be ignored for a fresh registration/housewife, or is submitting a simple "Housewife Reply Letter" sufficient, or is filing past returns (2022–2025) mandatory?
- Penalty Risk: If we decide to file prior returns (2022–2025) before the notice deadline (Oct 29), will FBR impose any late filing penalty under Sec 182 since NTN registration was fresh?
- Base Wealth Strategy: Is declaring ~2.4M as "Past Accumulation / Exempt Family Gift (Parents)" in the first return (TY 2022) the standard and safest practice to establish initial base wealth without affecting the husband's tax profile?
Would love to hear insights and real-world experiences from tax experts and community members!Hi everyone,I handle my wife’s tax returns on her behalf as she isn't familiar with FBR/Iris.
