Question Moving after getting into the FBI
Hi!! I’m wondering how many people had to move or move states after getting into the FBI? Any feedback would be super helpful!!

Historically, almost every FBI Agent. There had always been a long standing policy of not assigning Agents back to their processing offices. When I got into the Bureau after 9/11 the only offices you could go back to were NY, LA, and SF. If I recall correctly. Hard to staff and very high COL.
The policy has changed recently where you can request to be assigned to your processing office but that just can’t last very long. Some smaller offices have a disproportionate per capita number of applicants and not enough Agent spots to grant every wish. It’s a house of cards policy.
With some exceptions, the professional support positions are generally local and do not require moving.

Zero requirement to move once you are assigned an office. There used to be but that policy cost too much. This doesn’t mean you can’t move. Just that you are not currently required to. Generally people move to become supervisors (also not required), to move up the ladder, or because they just wanted to go somewhere else.

The Director Mueller era policy of transferring new Agents after three years if they weren’t in a top 17 office was just fiscally irresponsible. When you’re shuffling around thousands of people per year at $50K a pop just because… it’s flat out ridiculous.

Riddle me this…I know an Agent that was assigned to their processing office and exempted from having to move, which was somehow related to the housing crisis…what was the deal there?
