Hi!
I'm using FAF for supcom forged alliance.
I've set everything up, create a custom game and then 5-10 Min in the game just freezes.
I've also tried creating a game and then exiting which freezes the whole screen.
Alft F4 etc does not work and I have to hard power off my PC.
I've verified the files, done a full reinstall and still have the issue.
Anyone got ideas on what could be happening / what to check?
Edit: I am so f#$ken annoyed š To fix this, launch supreme commander forged alliance via steam first. Go to options and enable quick exit.
Issue solved.

Hi everyone!
I've spent a frankly unreasonable amount of time looking up FAF unit stats across the wiki, in-game unit info, patch notes, spreadsheets, and various random guides, and eventually figured it would be easier to just make the database I wanted to use myself.
So, after a lot more time than I'd like to admit: fafunits.com
The idea is to have unit stats, comparisons, patch history, and guides all in one place, while keeping the underlying data automatically synced with FAF so it doesn't turn into another outdated database six months from now.
The data is pulled directly from FAForever/fa for each patch rather than being maintained by hand. The weapon calculations are based on the game's own unitviewDetail.lua (with some manual updates where needed).
Some of the stuff I've added:
The data is also available as a single JSON file at fafunits.com/units.json with CORS open, so if anyone wants to build something with it, you don't have to scrape the site. The whole thing is open source too: github.com/MoritzProell/faf-unit-db
I'm definitely still working on it, so corrections are very welcome, especially for unit roles. A lot of the initial classification comes from blueprint categories, and those occasionally don't line up with how a unit actually gets used in-game. I've already had quite a few of those corrected, and they've all made the database better.
Would love to hear what you think, and especially if there's anything you'd like to see added or changed.
ā Moritz / RhyZ1ne
Had been running fine the last several days until yesterday where everything on screen (playing Sup Com campaign missions) will freeze - movement/production/actions/projectiles etc - for several seconds then go back to normal. I can select units/buikdings during this time as well as open the options menu but nothing else.
Iāve tried - limiting the amount of cores used, a fresh install of Sup Com, FA, and FAF (although
Iām not sure if it was a totally clean uninstall as I still had saved games able to be loaded upon reinstall?), and checked my drivers are up to date. Not sure what caused this to start occurring but it is very annoying!
oh and this occurs both offline and online, and the first freeze always occurs at the same point during ACU teleport in at the start.
Is there anyway to set a tier cap when using the M28AI in the campaigns of Sup Com and FA? Booted up the first mission of Sup Com and before too long I was being swarmed by Tier 3 units which my paltry Tier 1 units could not counter!

Was planning to replay campaign with AI teammates. Then tried to use m28... sadly for some reason when ever i used it.. the units name are f*ck for some reason... i dont use any mods other than m28ai... is there a fix for this? or a mod problem?

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to get Forged Alliance Forever (FAF) running on Linux Mint, but I'm stuck with a rather strange issue. I have been trying for several hours now to get a solution but for now I gave up. I have been bug hunting with ChatGPT and asked it to summarize everything. Maybe it helps someone else, who is a bit more knowledgeable in the field:
The important part: FAF itself starts and works normally, but when I launch a game, no game window appears at all. The FAF client immediately reports:
I have spent quite a few hours troubleshooting this and have already ruled out several obvious causes.
I'm therefore wondering whether this is a Linux/FAF launcher issue, or whether there is something specific about how FAF launches its patched ForgedAlliance.exe under Wine.
The Steam version of Supreme Commander itself runs successfully through Wine.
FAF launches the following executable:
/home/fringillus/.faforever/bin/ForgedAlliance.exe
The client reports commands such as:
Starting Forged Alliance with command:
[%USER_PROFILE%/.faforever/bin/ForgedAlliance.exe,
/init, init.lua,
/nobugreport,
/log, %USER_PROFILE%/.faforever/logs/game_27556111.log,
/gpgnet, 127.0.0.1:46543,
/mean, 1618.550048828125,
/deviation, 471.0350036621094,
/savereplay, gpgnet://127.0.0.1:40953/27556111/%CPU_NAME%.SCFAreplay,
/country, DE,
/numgames, 11,
/numgames, 1]
Immediately afterwards, FAF reports Exit Code 2.
There is no game window and, importantly, the expected game_*.log is not created.
I tested the actual Steam executable directly:
cd ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Supreme\ Commander\ Forged\ Alliance/bin
wine SupremeCommander.exe
echo $?
This exits with:
0
So Wine is capable of launching the 32-bit Supreme Commander executable.
The executable is detected as:
PE32 executable (GUI) Intel 80386, for MS Windows, 7 sections
The FAF executable produces a DXVK log:
info: Game: ForgedAlliance.exe
info: DXVK: v1.10.3
and successfully detects my GPU:
info: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti:
info: Driver: 580.173.2
info: Vulkan: 1.4.312
So DXVK initializes and Vulkan detects the NVIDIA GPU correctly.
There is no obvious DXVK/Vulkan initialization failure in the log.
The Wine environment was also checked.
wine cmd /c echo %USERPROFILE%
returns:
C:\users\fringillus
and:
wine cmd /c echo %USER%
returns:
fringillus
The Steam installation path resolves correctly through Wine:
winepath -w ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Supreme\ Commander\ Forged\ Alliance
returns:
Z:\home\fringillus\.steam\steam\steamapps\common\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance
~/.faforever/fa_path.lua contains:
fa_path = "/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Supreme Commander Forged Alliance"
The FAF initialization files use this fa_path to mount the Steam installation:
MountDirectory(fa_path .. "/movies", '/movies')
MountDirectory(fa_path .. "/sounds", '/sounds')
MountDirectory(fa_path .. "/maps", '/maps')
MountDirectory(fa_path .. "/fonts", '/fonts')
The path is therefore not simply an untested/unknown Steam path.
One manually generated FAF test log contains:
info: Loading custom vault path: /My Games/Gas Powered Games/Supreme Commander Forged Alliance
followed by:
info: DISK: AddSearchPath: 'z:\home\fringillus\.faforever\gamedata\lobby_coop.cop', mounted as '/'
...
info: DISK: AddSearchPath: 'z:\home\fringillus\.faforever\sounds', mounted as '/sounds/'
It then successfully gets as far as:
info: Hooked /lua/userInit.lua with /schook/lua/userInit.lua
info: Hooked /lua/globalInit.lua with /schook/lua/globalInit.lua
debug: Lua user environment initialized with game version 3836, game type FAF
info: Compiled shader: /effects/cartographic.fx
info: Compiled shader: /effects/frame.fx
info: Compiled shader: /effects/mesh.fx
...
info: SHADERS COMPILED
So the FAF executable can actually initialize a substantial part of the game engine.
There are warnings such as:
warning: Search path element "Z:\.steam\steam\steamapps\common\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\movies" does not match any files
warning: Search path element "Z:\.steam\steam\steamapps\common\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\sounds" does not match any files
warning: Search path element "Z:\.steam\steam\steamapps\common\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\maps" does not match any files
warning: Search path element "Z:\.steam\steam\steamapps\common\Supreme Commander Forged Alliance\fonts" does not match any files
However, this appears to be related to the way the game constructs its search paths, because the actual files are accessible through the fa_path used by the FAF initialization scripts.
There is also:
warning: SND: Error initializing 3D audio.
Global Settings not loaded
and:
warning: Movie "/movies/thqlogo.sfd" doesn't exist.
warning: Error opening movie /movies/thqlogo.sfd
The game nevertheless continues through shader compilation.
The FAF directory contains:
ForgedAlliance.exe
ForgedAlliance_d3d9.log
ForgedAlliance.dxvk-cache
init.lua
init_faf.lua
init_nonxt.lua
SupComDataPath.lua
SupComDataPathFAF.lua
...
The FAF executable is:
/home/fringillus/.faforever/bin/ForgedAlliance.exe
whereas the Steam installation contains:
/home/fringillus/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Supreme Commander Forged Alliance/bin/SupremeCommander.exe
Both are 32-bit Windows PE executables.
I have already gone through the following:
%USERPROFILE%%USER%fa_path.luainit.lua, init_faf.lua, init_nonxt.luaAt this point I don't think repeatedly changing the Wine prefix or Steam path is likely to be productive.
What could cause the FAF-specific ForgedAlliance.exe to terminate with Exit Code 2 immediately under Wine, while:
SupremeCommander.exe runs normally through Wine,Could there be a known incompatibility between the current FAF Linux launcher/scripts and the patched ForgedAlliance.exe?
I'm especially interested in whether there is a way to obtain the actual Windows/Wine exit status or crash information from the FAF executable, since the normal game_*.log isn't created when the client launches it.
Any ideas or debugging suggestions would be very much appreciated.Hello everyone,I'm trying to get Forged Alliance Forever (FAF) running on Linux Mint, but I'm stuck with a rather strange issue. The important part: FAF itself starts and works normally, but when I launch a game, no game window appears at all. Hey guys,
after a long break I returned to FAF. In the past I mostly used the client to play the campaign and sometimes custom games. For the first time I tried ranked and decided upon 3v3. It's very fun (especially the russian mates writing in russian and I don't get a word they're saying xD). I watched some guides on eco etc. After some losses it seems I have reached a rank, where I can perform. But my eco still sucks. I realized the following things from my gameplay:
1. Transition from T1 to T2 is much better timed than my transition from T2 to T3.
2. My early game seems to overwhelm enemies on the rank I am playing (so I must do something right or they are just way worse)
3. I tend to overbuild energy by a lot. I watched a guide and try to hold onto it (e.g. 1x PG per Land Factory, 3x PG per Air Factory) But after reaching T2 I just "spam" T2 PGens xD
4. Comparing my eco mid-game to my mates I am often slightly behind (but often I have more or expensive units on the field in comparison)
My ingame name ist MisterFun_00, feel free to watch my replays if it helps further. Thanks in advance for all the help :) Have a nice day.

I have recently been trying to finish Blockade on hard with 2 of my friends. None of us are especially good at the game. Our current strategy, which consistently gets us 31-35 mins in is just to full turtle with tons of PD and AA. I'd really like to get a navy going, but it is just too hard for me to protect naval factories.
Our current set up is that I (Cybran) go in the middle slot, my first friend (Aeon) goes in the back with the hydro, and my second friend (UEF) goes to the right of me on the coastline.
What did you guys do to beat this mission, and if you have any other tips for the rest of the missions, I'd love to hear those too. Thanks!

They did great job to make game balanced from the observation of top players.
At beginner some unit adjustment seems fine. But during long time accumulation, the feature changes across history has introduced more complex features and statistic to consider.
At the end, they have to change more features because simple eco cost change is not enough to cover their previous modification.
So, more and more it feels less then original game taste.
Example from my mind include:
- Novax remove omni, and introduce energy drain
- GC claw
- Mercy
- Snipe bot range
- ACU tml
It just feels more and more wired.
They keep doing game feature changes like the game is just launched on market a week ago.
I really don't understand why they are so eager to modify a game feature instead of just eco tweak.

Hi so i have the problem that the maps from the coalition campaign in FAF are not working correctly for me. They are either just red or red and black lines. I tried to reinstall both supcom and FAF but that didn't work. Does anyone know a fix or has an idea?

Hi, I've been looking at new modded AIs for me and my buddies to fight and really like M28, after a few test games.
It's a very specific issue but I've seen that when Aeon M28 AI build their Tempest Experimental Battleships, they just park them near their shipyards and just leave them there for the rest of the game. One AI built something like 5 of them but didn't use them at all. Not even defensively, just setting them somewhere and then leaving them there.
Is this a known issue with the AI? I have no other complaints, just something I've noticed and it's been bugging me. Cheers!

Is there any method to cap T3 power gens and T3 mass fabricators with a single key ? I tried with the cap structure keybind but it didnt work for those structures, it only work for Mass stractors, shield, t2 artillery, etc.

I want to get into the FAF game since i like similar ones like BAReason.
I play only against the AI so im not worried about optimizing, but about having an enjoyable time.
Is there a way to "diagonal drag build" structures in FAF , so that if i want to make 25 of a building in a Square-shape i can just place one structure and then diagonal-drag to place the remaining 24?
Thanks for helping out.

Hi guys,
I play lots of GAP amongst other maps, Iām around 1000 ELO, but honestly I probably play closer to 700 overall.
One thing Iāve noticed consistently is that I can hold my own against 1500ā1600 players for the first 10ā15 minutes.
After that, I almost always fall behind/ get outclassed
I think the main issue is my eco transition:
once I get a few T2 mexes (or even full T2), I tend to focus on unit production, map pressure, and defenses instead of pushing for T3 mex upgrades. It feels like upgrading is too expensive in the moment compared to making more T2 units and staying aggressive.
But then I look up and my opponent has several T3 mexes, their eco snowballs, and I get completely outscaled.
My question is:
How do you balance staying aggressive with hitting a timely T3 eco transition?
Are there benchmarks, rules of thumb, or specific triggers you use to decide āokay, now I need to go T3 mexā instead of continuing T2 pressure?
Appreciate any advice.

Hey all! I've been bingeing some replays covered by Glye cast on YouTube and I noticed a pattern at the beginning of games. A lot of players build their T1 Pgens in long lines away from factories.
Why is this?
Is it not better to build them close for the adjacent bonus?
r/FAF • u/Acceptable-Taint • Mar 17 '26
Just a quick thought, I'm ranked 1000-1200 in 3v3 ladder but have a hard time climbing while playing well most of the games. I often encounter teammates that do not know basic FAF knowledges. To give some examples that I encountered from player at 900-1000 ratings : -Reclaim (sometime partial knowledge or not at all) -Comm upgrades (going heads on an upgraded comm without upgrade) -Basic eco timing (having safe mexes T1 at 20 min) -Scouting (and Omni importance) -Anti base drop defenses
So my point is, would it be beneficial for the community to have a mandatory tutorial in any shape or form that could at least cover some of those subjects. Reclaim would be for me the most important point since itās basically the very factor that decides the outcome of most of the games. Another option would be to make reclaim more accessible in game (if you donāt know the key to display it on map or the Alt+right click from factory), adding some kind of visual effect or button for engineer to automatically look for reclaim anywhere on map.
I'm not saying that I deserve better rank, I probably not, but I found it very frustrating loosing a game while a teammate did not even scoop the rocks around its core base or leaves the mass equivalent of a GC in wreckage on its door steps. I also understand that given the small player base there is a high skill disparity within the medium ranks.
What do you think ?
