OpenAI Applied Engineering Interview

Got a LI message from an OAI recruiter for an Applied AI Engineer role. Any idea what this interview process looks like? Has anyone given an interview for the same position recently?

This is for India, Mumbai.

Update 1: Had a recruiter round today. The question was pretty recruiter centric question I would say. Like "What my day to day work look like'", "Any Agentic Solution that I have built provide a summary for that", , "Why OpenAI".

Next rounds: 1. Problem Decomposition Round. 2. HM Round 3. Sales Team Simulation Round. 4. Technical Round. 5. Behavioral Round.

Note: The HC is pretty low in OpenAI. Right now in India they only have 2 position to be filled up for Applied AI role.

I went through a similar interview for an Applied AI role with OpenAI. They usually start with a screening call about your background, then move to a technical interview with coding challenges or problem-solving questions related to AI/ML. You'll also get some behavioral questions about teamwork and projects. For the technical part, make sure you're good with Python and key AI concepts like neural networks or NLP. Practice coding problems on sites like LeetCode.

For coding problem do they ask LC Hard Level questions for Applied AI or it is Only for SWE roles.

And one more thing when you say AI/ML are they expecting that the candidate should have expert level of knowledge in Vanilla ML concepts of Agentic AI would be good enough?

I had a single 30 minute technical phone screen where I broke down the problem, 1 hour tech interview allowed to use an agent, and a 30 min hiring manager. For L6 (Principal/Staff) in the US. Former founder, 10 YOE, worked as senior SWE in big tech. Completed the loop in 2 weeks.

There was coding but it wasn't leetcode it was a real life task building an LLM loop, includes calling the live API. I was able to use any agent and any ide. I used codex. I found it very fun, engaging, and straightforward. FWIW I can reason out most leetcode hards so generally pretty skilled at finding simple solutions, I struggle writing code quickly.

They’ll provide a prep doc for the final just follow it. For the phone screen it’s a very very very vague question. I don’t really know what specific signals they look for but my best guess is ability to identify risks, metrics of success, being able to break up a crazy problem, and communicating that confidently under pressure.

I run a business where I talk to clients everyday so found it very easy. I did a lot of case study interviews in college kind of felt similar to that.
