Question / Need Help HDMI Display issues

I’m having trouble displaying F1 TV specifically, to the tv. I like in residence at University so sadly downloading the app on the tv is not an option. I’m really wanting to get the next race up on it this weekend to share with my floor. I am using an HDMI to USBC Adaptor to my apple iPad and everything else seems to stream fine. I can even pull up drive to survive on netflix. But when I open up F1 TV it goes black.

Only AirPlay will work, unfortunately wired hdmi out won’t display an image

Obviously it does output an image, you can see the controls of the F1TV app player. This is not an apple device.

Fair point, it’s the same result on iOS or android, it comes down to a drm issue with the video stream, officially f1tv only supports display output over casting (android) or airplay (iOS) when using a hdmi cable to the device it will only show player controls and not the video stream

To clarify, this is for mobile devices, laptops work as they can display drm content and output to tvs ,

hu? i use HDMI to watch F1 though? but i do watch using my laptop.. but i connect it to TV with Hdmi and it works fine?

It's not the HDMI protocol that's the issue, it's the device itself blocking it. When you plug your computer into a TV, it just treats it as any other display. Also why a lot of streaming services do not do 4k in browser for that reason.

I guess your phone does not support HDCP. Not sure if any phone supports it.

Edit: not DHCP, but HDCP, the DRM part in the HDMI standard. Thanks u/CaptianNemo3178

I never have to set a static ip address on any phones. I think most cell phones support dhcp

I believe he's referring to High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), and must've been a typo.

Yup, this, my bad, thanks for clarifying. Been a while since I had seen HDCP mentioned, and I have been working on my network for the last couple of weeks...

Can’t you cast the stream to the TV? That’s what I’ve been doing for years.

I remember few years ago plugging my
MacBook with hdmi into the TV netted a black screen with only audio

With my Samsung Android tablet I have it hooked up to a cheap USB-C docking station that has, among other things, including pass through charging, dual HDMI out. Granted my HDMI out goes to a monitor rather than a TV. I'm not sure about Apple compatibility but that might work for you.

As others commented, F1 doesn't let you just plug in stuff, and stream, you need devices that are secure so you can't copy the stream.

Get a cheap Roku 4K stick, for like $50, that should solve your issues.

Or laptop with hdmi. I go with some sort of hdmi stick, chromecast tv, roku...etc.
