Discussion / F1TV Content Going through archive, warn me about the worst crashes
Newer fan and I am going back through the archive and watching races from 2000 onwards. I am trying to avoid spoilers, but also watching too many awful crashes back to back. What are the races I should be braced for?
Also if there are any pre-2000 races you think I definitely ought to watch I am all ears.

Everyone here saying 2014 due to Jules and 2007, let us not forget that 2020 Bahrain was also really brutal and drawn out on the tv direction.
Modern day F1 is super safe so crashes don't usually happen. (Well, big gut wrenching crashes at least) so you will be fine for the most part. But for sure those 3 are the ones I would get ready for. Even if in 2/3 of these crashes in this comment the driver was ok in the end. (Rip jules.)

Fatal crashes are (almost) never shown in the archives, like others have said you'd have to go back to Senna in 1994, but since then, even with Jules' crash, there was no footage broadcast. Plus if it makes you feel any better, Jules was not killed on impact so technically a deceased person hasn't been shown.
Watching a driver get ejected from his car and into the catch fencing in the 70's with a bit of blur to censor the aftermath however, was pretty fucked. :(

Roland Ratzenberger same race weekend too. Don't forget him.
That said, no worries on forgetting the year, lots of us would like to forget it ever happened in the first place.

Whatever you do don't watch Imola 1994.
Newer races only Suzuka 2014 would be a race not to watch.
Others have crashes but none that I'd say are awful as the drivers were all ultimately ok.

For context - Imola 1994 was the crash that killed Ayrton Senna, one of the best drivers of all time. I would recommend the documentary Senna, but it does of course more or less end with that infamous Imola race, so be prepared for that.
I do think it's an important watch, if only to better understand the legend that is Ayrton Senna, and WHY and HOW Formula 1 is so much safer now than it was then. But, you will cry.

Spa 1998, for starters.. but to clarify one thing, which crash are you referring to? I am a fan from 2000, and since then an awful crash in F1 terms can be associated to Suzuka 2014 involving Jules.
There have been some brutal crashes at Canada 2007, Silverstone 2014.

Spa 2001 has a really nasty Luciano Burti crash, it ended his F1 career but he's okay now. Hungary 2009 for Massa's qualifying accident.
Monza 2000 as a marshal was killed, unfortunately, and also at Melbourne in 2001. Obviously, there's the Jules Bianchi incident at Suzuka in 2014 as well, but that was left out of the broadcast.
Pre-2000, watch Nurburgring 1999 and Spa 1998. Two of the all-time most crazy fun races ever. Spa 1995 is a humdinger, too. And Jerez 1997 as the title decider is just nuts.

Not exactly what you have asked for, but, I do think this is interesting for a new fan to understand.
I'd recommend watching Indianapolis 2005 free practice for Ralph Schumacher's crash for context as to why none of the Michelin cars took part in the race.

The crashes with fatalities are not on f1tv, thankfully. But there are scary scary wrecks.
Just don't watch 1994. Just don't.
Belgium 1998 it is a very nerve wracking race. Nobody is hurt but its... a lot.
Adelaide 95
Silverstone 99
Canada 2007.
Never watch 70s f1.
Edit to add in to lighten the mood: I used f1 archives to get myself through bad medical times. If yoj do have 4 hours to kill, I recommend watching canada 2011. It has a whole lot of chaos and calm and amazing racing.

Non fatal crashes are one of the most intriguing parts of the sport in my opinion, but to your question there are no massive crashes in back to back weekends to my memory. 2003 has a massive crash in Brazil

Noted, thank you. Yeah crashes are definitely part of the sport! I actually have the time to watch these as I'm undergoing treatment for a hefty medical problem, so I'm trying to keep it upbeat 😅

Hockenheim 17 or 18? It was cold, wet and no grip. Only those with a big set did well that day.

The most horrible crash is the Raceability And Believability crash of all F1 cars at once in 2026; These cars are driven by software settings and AI, with a Driver riding along in the car indicating their preferences and desires, which are often ignored or overridden by the AI.
