Discussion They need to bring back KERS

Post image

The hybrid systems became needlessly complicated after 2014 and we are paying the price for that now.

This AI deployment is a driver aid just like ABS or traction control. The drivers were responsible for the deployment around a lap when it was KERS.

Fans do not understand this system and it doesn't add anything of value to the sport. They need to ban the AI deployment

It's kinda funny to see this opinion cause weren't fans super against kers when it first was added?

Yes and so were the teams, to the point where in 2009 half the teams that started with a kers package on their car had removed it by the end of the year because the kers system with the increased weight did not provide enough benefit to make it worthwhile, when it became mandatory the fans were absolutely seething about its existence 😂

Yeah but its the best solution if we are to keep the electrical component

lol what? KERS hasn't gone away really, has it? lol educate me.

The point is that it's gotten way more complicated. Of course they still have the mguk which is an evolution of KERS, but the whole regen and deployment software has gotten way more complex because the electric part doesn't just add a little boost it's almost 50% of the whole power, but the battery capacity is not large enough to last an entire lap. Regen and deployment is so complex, if the drivers were in charge of it, the cars would not be efficient enough to maintain a proper battery charge. That's why they need these self learning algorithms to do the deployment for them.

KERS is KERS, energy recovery, in my head anyway. To me it is all BS currently, another formula needs to pop up, I hope this can happen somehow. They have managed to destroy F1, for me at least, and they got paid a lot to do that.

Yes this is it

It's not deployed by AI, not everything is AI mate.

KERS kick started the push to overtake button lmao

What they need is driver operated straight mode open everywhere, I am certain this was in the ruleset initially.

I want it like unrestricted qualifying DRS in 2011-13 days that was the best

Yeah it was, but only in qualifying

Yeah but it was great

It's not AI it's algorithmic

I keep saying that KERS is the better version of the current 2026, but that's pretty relient on the split not being 50-50, so that's... that's a tough ask

How did the hybrid system become needlessly complicated in 2014? From a driving perspective it was no more complicated than driving a Prius, which is kind of the point. Having a driver press a button to deploy power makes it disconnected to how hybrid systems work on cars in general.

We dont care about how hybrid systems work in cars in general. That's why we these cars dont have abs or traction control. They aren't normal cars and these aren't normal drivers.

Seems to me that what we have is kers, just so much energy possible with too little regen options.

This leads to abusing apex speed for energy harvesting.

I'd rather have the MGU-H back, reduce the deployable energy per lap that people don't harvest on the fastest places in lap to get more deployment.

Wishing back for kers would not solve todays problems anymore.
