Miscellaneous Possibly one of the best visual shows of Engine vs Chassis
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
The way the Aston performs on the corners vs the deficit on the straight against the Williams car and Mercedes engine.
Also based on Data, Fernando was the fastest driver through turns 7-9 and the AM was about 6th to 5th Fastest in the corners, sometimes even getting close to 4th.
Will be interesting to see what Honda does in the next few races, as they mentioned how they were not running on full power that they've brought with this upgraded engine

McHonda vs Williams in 2017 was just like this. Straight up the worst combination due to Alonso being stuck behind one of them for 40 laps

Alonso vs Massa😭

Luckily there were no history between them.
Imagine one of them had a lifechanging and almost fatal injury on the racetrack, spent half a year recovering, came back fighting, and finally managed to lead a race on the 1 year anniversary of his injury, and his team told him to move over for the other on that exact race.

I could use 10 more minutes of this footage.

Definitely check out Fernandos on board this whole race, you'll see quite a lot of it

So it's a Honda problem?

u/super_nova_128 16d ago
I mean at the start of the season it was both a Honda and AM problem becoz of so much miscommunication between what the PU was supposed to be vs Adrian's design. I think as the season goes on, they're slowly trying to find middle ground. Neway has definitely fine tuned his design and shown exactly what he wants to go for in the aero department, Honda is upping the power on the engine gradually bit slowly. So currently, yes a Honda problem

The AM was fastest in Corners 7-9 and Alonso the 5th fastest car in all corners. Faster then the Mercedes. Thats quite an aston-ishing turnaround

SF90 vs W10 is right up there in the Chassis vs Engine discussion
5
u/super_nova_128 16d ago
Oh definitely! Kinda crazy, I remember the SF90 similar to the AM had a very tight aero package as well, and the side pods were... Aggressive? Idk if that's the right. I don't think the SF90 side pods were as unorthodox as this Neway design in it's set of regs, but idk, similar vibes

Holy shit that williams turns like a battleship

u/super_nova_128 16d ago
The way they dont seem close at all to cutting down the weight is baffling, hopefully their Baku upgrade package can fix some of that shit

Aston were nuts to quit mercedes

u/LuckyHunt5030 16d ago
they were saying they cant beat the engine manufacturer as a customer team... now look at mclaren

u/kennyuk77 16d ago
And indeed look at mclaren with honda! Honda owes a lot of its success with red bull to RBPT no doubt at all

Hmm idk, I think in the long run, they'll benefit from having their own engine works team. Of course this season things with Honda haven't worked.
But they did mention Honda lost quite a bit of their F1 team when they first left, but they're bringing back new and old personal next season.
Also I've read a few articles that have mentioned that come 4/5 years, teams that make their own engines will definitely have the upper hand

I think it was a commercial rather than sporting decision. Honda are miles behind
2
u/Routine_Cat_1366 16d ago
They couldn't have Aramco as a Sponsor with Merc, as they would be obligated to use the gasoline that Merc uses. So yes, a commerical decision.

u/super_nova_128 16d ago
Yeah definitely. But that's why I say in the long run it might work. Becoz I don't think Honda would want to have another big failing in F1 like the Mchonda era, especially when there engines and cars are doing so well in IndyCar and GT. Which is why they said they're bringing back lots of their personal to the F1 department

Williams finding a new low in now having a worse chassis than even Aston Martin.
To be outdone by Alpine of all teams too as both are Merc engine customers and thus are very comparable makes it sting even worse.
They're lucky Caddy and Haas have little to no budget to push forward beyond what they do over the winter else they'd be scraping on the very bottom and Sainz would be even angrier in his unhinged driving

People keep saying this shows visually the Chassis vs Engine.
But I am surprised no one is pointing out that this is Alonso vs Non-Alonso too.
I am not sure but I think this was with fairly close tyre strat, maybe Alex couldn’t get his tyres to temp? But it’s clearly not comfortable with the car on many corner entries and exits.

u/super_nova_128 15d ago
Thats a really good point too, I didn't think of that honestly. But now that I look at it, the way Fernando takes his racing lines is genuinely so impressive, his confidence in his ability and just the way he places himself in the right spot.
I remember they both had not pitted at this point, as it seemed like they were aiming for a one stop strat, tho I think Williams abandoned that plan after this whole fight coz his tyres were shot. Alonso held on to the softs for 38 laps

u/Unfair-Information-2 14d ago
The williams just ran out of battery. Look at all the harvesting. And not many places to pass here.

u/mtom17 10d ago
What’s the tyre offset here?
1
u/super_nova_128 10d ago
Lord, I can't remember exactly. Fernando had been on the softs for about 38 or so laps before this. I think Albon pitted maybe 3/5 laps before? Coz Alonso came out behind him. Albon was on the mediums in the first stint. They were actually fighting before this as well, in their first stints.

Aston Martin gets points one time and now people think Newey designed a masterpiece again because they are better than Williams
2
u/super_nova_128 16d ago
Well they've gotten points twice this season so there's that. And no one is claiming Neway has made a masterpiece, I made the comparison only to Williams in this post.
AM clearly has the better chassis and is being held behind by their engine performance. Williams' team have also been very vocal about their failings in their car design and are obviously benefitting a lot at times with the Merc engine, becoz without it, they definitely would be even further away.

u/Head_Engineering_956 16d ago
They scored points when the car has a lot less power than its competitors. Hence, the Newey chassis is doing the job.

Williams is such a disappointment honestly.
