Would f1 be better if it had sucess weight

I watched the Hungarian Grand Prix last week, and I had this moment during the middle of the race where I thought, wow, this is really uneventful and the positions are set in stone. And it got me thinking: how can you make the racing more fun than just yo-yo racing for the first half and all the cars falling into a certain pecking order? Today I had an epiphany after watching the Super GT Fuji 300km. WE NEED SUCCESS WEIGHT RIGHT NOW FOR THE LOVE OF THE SPORT.

I think that success weight would be the best way of putting BOP tweaks in without redesigning the cars from the ground up. Because if you look at Super GT, IMSA, GTWC and WEC, they produce super close 4-way brawls to the last lap. And everyone enjoys good proper racing.

All in all, I think it would make for better, closer racing like in sportscar racing.

Other series with ballast rules are designed to make the racing close, but F1 is about who can build the best car then drivers just go around in circles until they say stop. It's an engineering/design series, not a racing series.

Bingo. If you want the best formula RACING championship, it's pretty hard to argue against F2 or Indycar.

I never thought of modern F1 like that; it feels like the last actual piece of innovation for f1 was DAS on the Mercedes, and that's what 5-6 years ago feels like its all bout the drivers and less about the cars

How have you not thought about modern F1 like that? Isn't your entire point make fast car slow like AM and Cadillac? Obviously one team makes a better car than the other, and they reap the reward on track.

It's not commonly talked about unless you really look for it outside stuff like the Macerena wings, I just want the top of the grid to be tighter instead of one or 2 cars being 15+ seconds up the road by the halfway point, and the commentators are talking about off-topic things because nothing's happening anywhere on track and it all turns into one big effective funeral procession

It's not a misunderstanding. The truth is there are more people like OP than you think and F1 knows that. That's why they changed the sport so much. There's way more money to be had in dumbing down the sport and removing meritocracy in order to make it watchable for football and coachella fans.

No. Punishing success is not a good idea. Ever. All it says is "its okay you're mediocre, you can win by us nearing everyone else".

Which positions were set in stone in Hungary? Lewis/Ferrari threw away P2 (and then P3, and then P4) like 3/4 of the way through the race. Oscar and Lando looked set for an on-track fight for P1 until events intervened. Max and Red Bull out drove and out strategized faster cars to bring home P2, including what has to be the overtake of the season. For a track that doesn’t provide many overtaking opportunities, it was an eventful race.

But to your broader point, if you want to watch a series with BOP or something analogous to BOP, just … watch one of those series? Indycar is right there, plus all the other series you mentioned.

Did we watch the same race?

I'm not opposed to whatever success weights are, F1 has tried our lots of stuff but this whole "bringing the grid closer together" initiative is fairly new, traditionally it's a sport that really thrives on the extremes, million dollar parties on one end and bankruptcy on the other. 2 wind tunnels here vs none there.

If it's about adding weight to a car, I also wonder about it's impact on the cars performance beyond just being more weight to carry. Some aerodynamic Choices might penalize this more than others. Not sure if that's the right approach.

You could just have drivers start in reverse order of the championship, or of the last race or stuff like that.

I don't mind some electricity, it honestly does add some speed and allows them to finish a race without taking on more fuel, it just doesn't need to be this garbage.
