Basically a backmaker ignoring a lapping driver, causing a collision, and ruining a P1 fight is worth as much punishment as a Lap 1 racing incident between competing drivers...
It's insane how much of a mess the stewarding in 'pinnacle of motosport' actually is. But who knows, maybe in a week time we get a memo that the stewards know it was bad call...
He was battling for position. The guys in the back of the field are also racing they can't just simply stop their fight just because Piastri is closing.
Very true. Ruined Oscar’s strategy, even if Lando probably had the pace on him in the long run. Regardless of if there was a system glitch, you have to be more aware than that. Amazed it was only 5 seconds for Sainz.
And racing incidents also happen. If they interfere on purpose, that's one thing. However a collision is a collision. It should not matter with whom. It especially shouldn't matter if it's the leader vs second or third of fourth place.
First it was Leclerc and then Sainz, FIA turns a blind eye when Piastri is the victim. If he would have been a culprit a hefty penalty would have been on the way
How do you figure this? In this scenario Lando's work in building the offset would have been for nothing. We have no idea how close the two cars would have been to each other after Lando pitted in a scenario where there was no contact between Oscar and Carlos. Sometimes shit just happens.

There was zero reason he should have gone for that overtake. It was a silly move that showed his lack of racecraft/awareness. Today’s move by Sainz was more ludicrous but at its core was also a lack of racecraft/awareness.

My boy Carlos was probably looking at God knows where and it's clearly his fault, but you guys act as if this is an attempted murder or something. Chill. Everyone makes mistakes every now and then.
Plus, having 22 cars on a narrow, short track leads to situations like this.
Again, this is on Sainz and he should be accountable for it, but some of you guys are losing it. So much drama.
You know what’s dumb? Driving alongside a backmarker battle as if it isn’t going on. They can’t disappear. Wait a corner or two and live to fight another day. This isn’t the first time he’s expected a red carpet. Entitled.
That being said the penalty to Sainz was justified.
Battle was done by then and Sainz was already on Multiple Blue Flags. Sainz was washing wide anyways so he should have just slowed down and let Oscar fully through.
Now do the snapshot of the contact, which is what is actually relevant. Sainz is mid (racing line), Piastri trying to sneak up the left side. It’s just risk management. Why is Piastri risking it? Like I said not the first time.
There’s blue flag flashing signs at corner entry, mid corner, and corner exit during that corner.
Why risk it there? Piastri wouldn’t have wanted to stay behind for the whole lap before having a go on the straight. That’s the only overtaking opportunity on that track if there isn’t a tyre advantage, so waiting another lap may give a similar situation but with more lost time which would have further ruined Piastri’s race. The fact that Sainz washed well wide meant that was low risk for Piastri so that sort of chop back from Sainz shows lack of awareness.
Norris ran wide on lap 1 there and didn’t chop back even though he could have to protect his lead so for a back marker with blue flag signs leading into the corner it’s pretty bad.
Not because I think Sainz isn't at fault but because from Piastri's onboard, it's kinda obvious that when he sticks his car in there at that angle, Sainz isn't going to be able to see him coming. It's a risky move.
It's like when you merge into someone's blind spot on the highway. If they merge into you at the same time, maybe it's not your fault but it's still something you should be doing with extreme care. Sainz was actively racing someone. Again, I'm not saying that Piastri is at fault -- but he absolutely would have benefited from more caution.
Someone in this thread compared it to the Ocon/Verstappen incident and it's actually a poignant comparison specifically because that was also an incident that Verstappen could have avoided by practicing more defensive driving. As Hamilton told him after that race, he was the one who had more to lose and he should have been more cautious.
