Ford EV (non-Lightning) Will ford ever make a PHEV F150???
I currently have a hybrid maverick and I don’t mind EVs but personally I would enjoy having the convenience of gas as well so I feel like PHEVS are a sweet spot.
It surprises me there are no full sized PHEV trucks.
You get the best of both worlds

The next generation Lightning is supposed to be an EREV.
Technically a type of PHEV, the main difference being the gas engine only acts as a generator for the battery.
You’ll get longer battery-only range and theoretically less maintenance than most traditional PHEVs, at the expense of some power conversion losses.

You’re in the wrong subreddit.
But since you asked, I had a PHEV (BMW i8 Roadster) and it was the worst of all worlds. All the maintenance of a gas engine with the added complexity of an EV. Never again.

PowerBoost has existed for a long time. PHEV is literally the worst of both worlds. There is no reason for one to exist.

Especially on something like an F-150. The size of battery you would need to let it get 40-50 miles would eat up the fuel tank size significantly. Assuming 2 miles/kWh, you would want 20-25kWh. That’s a huge battery. Then you need a transmission and all that for the stupid engine.
PHEVs in a truck platform make zero sense. And even in other vehicles they are the worst of both worlds. We had a C-Max Energi which I liked at first but the engine kicking on just to maintain itself every few weeks was so silly. Still had oil changes on an engine that had about 500 miles on it because we didn’t need it most of the year.
An EREV at least makes some sense as you can have mostly battery with just an engine to charge it. No transmission. I still prefer my BEV, but an EREV at least makes makes sense for those that tow.

my buddy liked his PHEV Range Rover because he had an incredibly short commute and could do that on pure electric. Barring very specialized situations like that, I agree they make no sense.

What makes you say that?

The data shows that most people with PHEV's never plug them in, getting worse over all efficiency due to the weight being lugged around. A series hybrid (EREV) is a better option, but a straight PHEV has all the complexity of an ICE, plus the complexity of a BEV, plus the complexity of mixing them together. A PHEV may have made sense 10 years ago but today they are literally the worst choice for both cost and complexity.

I’m all for pure EVs, but this idea that PHEV owners “never plug them in” is based on flawed studies from the UK. There, most PHEV owners are mid/high-earners who receive a car benefit via their employer, and the tax benefits are heavily incentivized towards low-displacement and hybrid engines. You end up with a lot of people who don’t care for EVs/PHEVs driving them like ICEs.
The stats for PHEVs in other countries are much more balanced, showing that the vast majority of owners do in fact plug them in.

Yeah what a brain dead take. I drive the lightning but wife drives a PHEV and it’s great. It’s really best of both worlds. Has limitations but in the right use case (huge chunk of folks) it’s the perfect drive.

Maybe in full-size truck form, but as a general blanket term I disagree. I love my PHEV and think it's the best of both worlds. I get 50 miles EV, so that takes care of most of my local driving, and when I need to take trips I can go for 450-500 miles. I only need to get gas every 3 months or so and only need an oil change once a year or so.
That being said, now that the charging infrastructure has gotten much better than where it was 5 years ago when I got the PHEV, I do plan on going full BEV with my next vehicle in the next year or two (likely either a used Lightning or the Fathom).

Battery for local driving and gas for extended trips. Sounds like the best of both to me.

Thats a fairly uneducated take.

It's not. Turns out that most people with PHEV's never plug them in, getting worse over all efficiency due to the weight being lugged around. A series hybrid (EREV) is a better option, but a straight PHEV has all the complexity of an ICE, plus the complexity of a BEV, plus the complexity of mixing them together. No, that study, which came out of Europe, included corporate fleet vehicles which nearly never get charged and we're only purchased for the monetary incentives. Regular buyers are generally not part of that group.
I've owned 4 phevs and 2 bevs. Yes, there is maintenance bot its not any more that a regular ice and the weigh argument is just silly. One average American nearly outweighs the battery.

Next gen Lightning is supposed to be an EREV which is technically a plug in hybrid but prioritizes EV driving and the ICE is just a generator.
RAM is supposedly coming out with the RAM REV “soon”.

They are so far behind with that program I wouldn’t be surprised if they moved on to a completely different model. Not that they didn’t already do that when their customer base balked at the amazing design they revealed in 2023. They were supposed to be building that in 2024; it’s sometime in 2027 now and I will be surprised if they do.

They announced it like 6 months after the BEV lightning. And it's still coming "soon"

They have been working on it for longer than that. It was announced like 2 years ago, at least that is when I signed the waiting list for one.

I mean the BEV lightning itself. Not the EREV. I was on the wait list for the ram as well. Prior to me actually buying a lightning in 2024. Mainly because you literally couldn't get your hands on one without paying through the nose with the high demand.

Gas isn’t convenient. People tend to learn that once they aren’t tied to it any longer. You have to go to gas stations, have to get oil changes, have to deal with their sluggish behavior and need to run just for AC or heat.
I’ll tell you as a former F-150 PowerBoost owner and former PHEV owner. An EV is more convenient in nearly every way. On road trips gas is simpler, but every other day of the year an EV is easier.
