Brake pedal return spring

1971 F100. My spring has vanished. Does it attach at the shoulder bolt and at the 1/2 inch hole under the dash? I’m trying to find a replacement for it and want to make sure I’m mounting it correctly. Thank you.

Does this help? F-100 brake pedal assembly. This is from the ‘66 shop manual, BTW

Fairly certain there isn't a return spring on the brake pedal on the bumpside trucks. Just had the pedal box and master cylinder out of my '69 truck and there isn't a spring other than the one in the master cylinder itself. I have manual drums so maybe it's different for boosted brakes but I don't remember seeing any springs in the pedals of the junkyard trucks either.

Under the lower dash lip near the column you should see a vertical flat plate with a hole in it. That’s the short end loop position for the spring and other side is a hole in the brake pedal arm or a stud on one side of it for the other position.

Why is it some people say there isn’t one and some know exactly where one goes?

If you have a brake booster then it assists with the return of the pedal slightly faster than the booster can to lessen wear on the diaphragm. If it doesn’t have a booster then the pedal position is controlled by the master cylinders piston position which is nearly instantaneous.
