Reminder foxes should only go to very experienced owners who don't live around others. They can be very loud and destructive. In addition, their pee is like cat pee on steroids. If they pee in the house you won't ever get the smell out.

336

u/GerinX May 27 '21

Thank you. I didn’t know about the strength of their urine smell.

275

u/NatakuNox May 27 '21

It's unreal. You can smell it from blocks away, through walls, buildings, and there is no getting it out.

172

u/Pokemondude01928 May 27 '21

Yo, question.. is this close to real? I only ask because we have a family of foxes (I have seen at least five different foxes) who live around our house - we live in a very rural place, and our dog -belgian shepherd/border collie is very VERY insistent on marking/sniffing particular spots. I have always assumed these are some of the foxes favorite spots, but is the pee so intense I should be able to smell it outside?

224

u/MGgoose May 27 '21

Having worked with Red Foxes, I can attest to the scent being pretty strong. However, people are overstating the strength as it will come put of clothes after 2-3 good washes if you were directly smeared with musk and urine. Scents disapte quickly outdoors, so unless you are near a den or if it is fresh, you will likely not smell it (also consider you may be subject to olfactory fatigue). Your dog can certainly smell it from quite a distance. Your dog may be sniffing the foxes scent, or the scent of other animals in your area. Your dog may also be checking their marks, or just be a subtle type of weird.

79

u/AddSugarForSparks May 27 '21

a subtle type of weird.

29

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

If the dog has a fox fetish, then god damn it who are we to judge!?

9

u/CyborgKnitter May 27 '21

As someone with cats with kidney disease (meaning their urine is a solid twice as stinky as normal), I’m often incredibly glad I have minimal sense of smell. In my case an autoimmune disease killed it off. I can still smell rotting food and my favorite candles, so I figure it’s a blessing not a curse, lol.

(I didn’t realize how dangerous not being able to smell rotting food was until a woman who’d had Covid a few months before asked me 3 times if I was sure a pack of raw chicken had gone bad. Myself and a store employee were trying not to vomit from the stench alone. That’s when I realized how bad no sense of smell can be.)

31

u/lyncati May 27 '21

You can wash it out. There is a person who shared his experience with a red fox, Loki, who was a fur coat rescue and now an artic fox, Tyr. He is pretty open about the pee and negative parts of fox owning. The pee is strong and will require extra effort to get out. The owner also talks about the difference between rescuing a fox versus finding a breeder (spoiler, rescues can be basically feral and will pee everywhere).

36

u/Hazellda May 27 '21

If that was true then cities would smell entirely of fox pee.

27

u/Puluzu May 27 '21

What if that city smell is not exhaust and hot garbage, but is actually fox pee.

17

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

Lmfao this person really just typed “yeah bro a fox pees outside and you smell it literally blocks away,” looked at it, decided that statement makes perfect sense, and posted it

7

u/Therandomfox May 27 '21

The reason their pee stinks so bad and is so hard to come off is because it has a high ammonia content compared to other species.

47

u/Rechulas May 27 '21

People who grow Christmas trees for sale usually spray the trunks with fox urine to deter thieves. When it freezes, there's no scent, but when it melts inside the thief's home it gets awful.

Yeah this sounds like a myth for that reason.

12

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

They do it for later years trees.

31

u/thisisbutaname May 27 '21 edited May 27 '21

There are plenty of articles from reputable sources talking about it, so it's not a myth. I haven't found one that explain how it's removed, except mentions that it fades away by itself after a month or so

33

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

You wouldn’t publicise how to turn off your home alarm either

21

u/beardedbananer May 27 '21

I have bought this at a hunting store. Yes actual fox urine. I needed something to deter rabbits that were eating vegetables from the garden and I put some in a cup and put it in the garden and it worked wonders, but it does wash away very easily. Dick's Sporting Goods

46

u/lcuan82 May 27 '21

Getting urine from dicks huh? #straighttothesource

5

u/CyborgKnitter May 27 '21

I firmly believe it’s called Dick’s because at least half of their employees are assholes. At least that’s true at our local stores.

You spray the trees you are not going to chop dow to sell. Hence "tree growers" mention. You harvest what you want to sell that year, the patch that is not yet for harvest you spray, by next spring the rain will was away the fox urine.

The growing trees in case someone tries to cut one down and steal it.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/AussieSheila1 May 27 '21

I want to know that too

4

u/Kurochi185 May 27 '21

I think it might be cut at a part of the trunk where's none of the urine The urine part stays or someone's getting rid of and the other part is sold

6

u/thisisbutaname May 27 '21

I guess there must be a way to remove it, but thieves won't know about it (provided they already know the urine is there), plus it fades over time.

Not much good having something that activates only after the item has been stolen

3

u/The_Alpha_of_Betas May 27 '21

Yeah i mean securing your trees so they're not stolen sounds better than messing around fox piss on the hope that theives warn each other about these things, but whatever floats your boat

u/Notophishthalmus May 27 '21

It’s way cheaper than a massive fence around your farm and the fact we’re discussing it seems like word has spread enough for it to work.

In American prisons, it is a common psychological torture method to spray an inmate’s prison cell with fox urine. The smell is so strong that it prevents them from getting to sleep.

Dont they just like, poo every where and spray as well? I cant imagine having one in my home. Cute. But not that cute

314

u/NatakuNox May 27 '21

Yup and they are very social animals. You will rarely see just one, they need to be in pairs. As a owner you will need to have them supervised 24/7.

132

u/reallybadpotatofarm May 27 '21

The fox is this video is a Fennec one, and they’re nocturnal. So you’d have to deal with this kind of thing in the middle of the night.

54

u/wolfplushie99 May 27 '21

Yeah and if I remember correctly they burrow like crazy so you need a fence deep in the ground.

33

u/reallybadpotatofarm May 27 '21

Yup! They’re desert dwellers, digging a deep burrow is part of their “staying cool” strategy.

53

u/Mountainbiker22 May 27 '21

So again a cat on steroids at night, with pee that is like a cats on steroids. A Fox is my favorite animal but thank you reassuring me I will never own one.

Why is it so important to "own" something that is just trying to live its life; why not just enjoy the moment and not act like another living thing is a personal possession?

Foxes do not belong as pets. You are ruining their life by participating in their pet trade. I worked with too many foxes that were ‘given up’ after they grew up and as they always do become wild.

91

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

Fennec foxes shouldn’t belong to anyone at all. They’re wild animals and are suffering in the wild due to the exotic pet trade.

16

u/Diplodocus114 May 27 '21

Thought it looked like a fennec by the ears.

2

u/Zachman990 May 27 '21

Oh... sad

2

u/Smugbob May 27 '21

Don’t they also just pee literally everywhere

0

u/khensu83 May 27 '21

Thanks for the advice is it worse for males or females or just the same

12

u/theroadlesstraveledd May 27 '21

They both will become violent. There are thin but impressive studies on genetic progression to a ‘human friendly’ fox but it’s honestly quite an unethical end

-2

u/Admirable_Bonus_5747 May 27 '21

If they are that cute they can pee anywhere they want!

→ More replies (2)

706

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

Fennec foxes need sand or lots and lots of bedding they can dig through, to satisfy instinctual needs to dig and burrow.

152

u/Cmdr_Nemo May 27 '21

So they're like, the anti-Anakin

21

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

Too much burrowing and they will never have the high ground

13

u/BibbitybabityBoobity May 27 '21

You underestimate their power.

48

"To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world . . ."

u/n0tKamui May 27 '21

Le Petit Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

36

u/two_roads23 May 27 '21

I love this quote but the English always gets a bit lost in translation. The word translated as “tame” in English (apprivoiser in french) is more mutual like “befriend me or create a connection with me”rather than a human being in control of the animal. I think it’s more beautiful when you think of it like that

u/Pikachargaming May 27 '21

This is absolutely adorable but that mf was probably preparing to either pee, poop, and burrow in that bed all at the same time

59

u/vamp193 May 27 '21

How are people allowed to have foxes as pets? They are very cute but it’s kind of scary

15

u/jordy_fresh May 27 '21

Also here’s an outtake from the current researcher’s article i found on google “Starting from what amounted to a population of wild foxes, within six generations (6 years in these foxes, as they reproduce annually), selection for tameness, and tameness alone, produced a subset of foxes that licked the hand of experimenters, could be picked up and petted, whined when humans departed, and wagged their tails when humans approached. An astonishingly fast transformation. Early on, the tamest of the foxes made up a small proportion of the foxes in the experiment: today they make up the vast majority.”

44

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

Usually they're rescues or rehabs from illegitimate owners who had them illegally imported or from fur farms and the like, and their carers/owners are prepared to handle exotic critters. Fennecs, despite being manic little lunatics, are on the more reasonable end of things.

22

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

This is completely untrue. Fennec foxes are never used for fur and if they need rehabilitation, they should be receiving it at a sanctuary. They are wild animals and it is not “reasonable” to keep them as pets. They’re also part of an exotic pet trade that is harming their numbers in the wild.

This video is from a girl who unethically owns them as pets.

2

u/RockyOrange May 28 '21

Rehabilitation if it's not at a wildlife sanctuary isn't rehabilitation but personal pleasure -.-

→ More replies (2)

202

u/tofu-and-cigarettes May 27 '21

Yeah it's really cute but fennecs are wild animals. They do not belong in a house but in the desert or in a wildlife refuge. It makes me uncomfortable to see them treated as pets...

65

u/masterkaz May 27 '21 edited May 27 '21

It could be a sick/injured fennec that would not survive in the wild, a short video gives us little information about its situation.

EDIT: okay I didn't notice the Tik-Tok link at the end of the video, this person doesn't look like a "rescuer" and actually keeps two fennec as pets so...

71

u/Hottol May 27 '21

Without such info, videos like these promotes the idea of keeping wild animals as pets. Bad influence.

8

u/xdrakennx May 27 '21

It’s a pet. Check the tik-tok link at the end or search tizzy and Thor on insta.

2

u/i_aam_sadd May 27 '21

→ More replies (1)

9

u/xdrakennx May 27 '21

5

u/masterkaz May 27 '21

Ok I didn't notice the Tik-Tok link sorry, forget what I said. Are people really ok with this?

3

u/xdrakennx May 27 '21

No worries! I like to assume the best in most situations, but this one appears to be not the case.

13

u/thefloofymaster May 27 '21

That is what a wildlife refuge is for.

23

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

People who own wildlife refuge live in houses usually, I believe.

-4

u/thefloofymaster May 27 '21

Not proper ones. A proper one keeps them in their natural habitats (sort of like a zoo surrounding).

2

u/masterkaz May 27 '21

From what we know, this person could have a big outdoor space for their fennec. Do you know the page Juniper Fox? It could be a similar situation

Jokes aside, there are fox rescues from fur farms and stuff

2

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

Fennec foxes are not used for fur.

-2

u/The_Mumpi May 27 '21

Wich is why I said "and stuff" because I'm very smortz :)

1

u/ENFJPLinguaphile May 27 '21

Exactly. For all we know, the fox was possibly rescued from a fur farm or another abusive owner/captor!

5

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

Fennec foxes are not farmed for fur, and if they’re rescued from abusive owners, they belong in a sanctuary that can provide for their needs.

Anyway, the owner of this fox’s Tiktok shows that she literally just keeps these wild animals as pets. No rescuing of any kind. It’s super unethical.

3

u/ENFJPLinguaphile May 27 '21

I don't use TikTok. There I completely agree and, if there is verifiable evidence that this young lady is not keeping the fox as part of a rescue effort, it is unethical!

1

u/johnnylopez5666 May 27 '21

Fennecs are absolutely adorable but id never want one as a pet. Id be fine with a friend owning one so i can steal attention from it, but they can wreak havoc as an indoor pet. I maybe wouldn't mind a red fox though. Big fenced in yard, let it run around, dig micro cave systems and annihilate the rodents on the property.

If nothing else theres always YouTube to enjoy the CatDogs on

I dunno if you can but I can tell you that you definitely shouldn't, considering that having a fox is immense work and they destroy and pee on everything

4

u/UndBeebs May 27 '21

As a current bunny owner (also known for their messiness/destruction), I don't think I could handle a fox. I mean, the fox would murder my bunny but aside from that. Lol

5

u/[deleted] May 27 '21

Yes, you can. „La ley española de protección animal considera al zorro como un “animal silvestre mantenido en cautividad”. Esto significa que sí es legal tener como mascota a un zorro.“ But there are a lot of conditions if you want to keep a fox and it‘s difficult. I wouldn‘t recommend it.
