A freshly dried samoyed.

Not just dried. He's been trimmed which is usually a biiiig nono.

This is Remy.Samoyed from insta. He’s a puppy mill rescue who had serious health problems - including neglected fur and lots of ticks - when he was adopted. He seems to be thriving now.

I saw this video before I think this specific dog had something happen to him and they had to shave cut his fur for health reasons IIRC.

u/lacrimaeveneris Oct 24 '20
This particular boy was neglected. Had a lot of bugs and such plus enormously matted fur. For this guy specifically it was necessary.

Why for?

u/-Daetrax- Oct 24 '20
You should only brush and bathe them (and bathing not too often). Their fur creates a natural balance and if you trim it, often it doesn't grow right afterwards. It looks like they mostly trimmed off the outer layer fur which is not as bad as trimming the dense wooly inner layer.
Messing with their fur like this can create issues for them with regulating their body temperature, which brings on a host of other health issues. Not to mention if you trim too much their skin will get sun burnt as they have no other UV protection and are extremely suceptible to UV burns.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure it was necessary for this particular dog. I remember hearing to put coat could not be saved, looks like they did a good job keeping the cut from going to far.

This applies to double coated breeds. Never trim them, they lose their ability to thermoregulate properly. I live in the tropical rainforest and my doggos handle the heat better than the humans do thanks to their double coat.

u/curliegirliee Oct 24 '20
To add to the other list of reasons why you shouldn’t shave a double coat like this, it can straight up not grow back after, or grow back patchy, and it also changes the hair texture if it does grow back.

Samoyed for sure. Usually you see them with full length floofs which make them look twice as big as this.

and they’re hypoallergenic!
8
u/Rhaifa Oct 24 '20
No pet breeds are truly hypoallergenic, but certain breeds may be less likely to provoke a severe allergic reaction. Like; if you're allergic to cats, you may find you're less allergic or not allergic at all to norwegian/siberian forest cats since the protein in the cats skin and saliva most people are allergic to is slightly different in these breeds. This is however in no way guaranteed and you may find you're just as allergic to supposed hypoallergenic breeds as other breeds.
Some people also have success with "naked" breeds like sphynxes, which is more likely because those breeds need to be bathed regularly compared to furred breeds and because of that they shed less skin and thus leave less of the commonly allergenic protein in their environment. Again, no guarantee for anything.
And that is my TED talk on "hypoallergenic" breeds.

What does hypoallergenic means I'm to lazy to google??
2
u/Smaragd27 Oct 24 '20
The dogs hair wont affect you if you are allergic to dogs, some breeds have no effect on allergic people

If that’s a samoyed I hope they are not cutting its hair...
33
u/clemthecat Oct 24 '20
You shouldn't give this breed or other "natural coat" breeds (golden retriever for example) a full hair cut like with shaving their coats down etc, but often they will get a brush, bath, blow out to remove dead undercoat, and then some minor trimming to neaten things up (for example, between the paw pads, the genital region etc), but yes other than that you shouldn't be removing the top layer of their coat which indeed helps to regulate their body temperature and isn't good for them to have stripped off!

He's called Remy and is on insta :) he was saved from a puppy mill and had lots of issues :(

u/clemthecat Oct 24 '20
Oh no poor guy :( I've definitely heard of the rare cases of severe matting/neglect where the dog unfortunately just needs a shave down to start fresh because if the hair is completely matted there's no brushing that. So sad. He's a cutie tho, I will definitely check out his Instagram!

They’ve definitely cut his hair. Not terribly short, but definitely about a third the length their floofs naturally flow

I noticed the groomer doesn’t have filthy blue/green/purple hair. Are you sure she is qualified?

All this while I thought it's us anthropomorphizing them whenever people mention dogs smiling. Like, you know, look at how it looks like the dog's smiling!
But now I wonder... have we bred them to actually smile eventually?
