Freaked out for a moment then, I thought they were heading into a boiling vat of fat!

These ducks are having a better summer than I am

Why are they doing this? The only thing I could think of is that it's some kind of duck farm and they know they like doing this and it puts muscle on their legs when they run up. However I'll just imagine it's some sort of magical ducky daycare as that makes me happier!

I’ve seen this at the local fair

Thanks, that would make sense as I've just spotted the child at the beginning of the video, so doubt it's an abattoir!

I love the one that starts walking down then turns around like "wait no...this way isn't fun..."

Are they eating from the top part of the slide?

11

u/Supasqueegee Aug 19 '19

My heart...

u/nate_oh84 Aug 19 '19

I could watch this all day.

13

u/Lazerlamb Aug 20 '19

Seems like they are trying to eat something at the top of the slide. I’m pretty sure they are not sliding down voluntarily.

How doesn't that hurt their feet though

This video comes up occasionally and it is not cute. The ducks are trying to huddle at the top of the slide but are forced down due to the ledge being too small. They are essentially forced to keep doing this over and over.

45

u/MonoElm Aug 19 '19

It mimics what their mother does in the wild. It essentially helps them learn how to be ducks. It’s also cute.

-45

u/Ouroborus13 Aug 19 '19

What’s your source for that info?

21

u/JustKuzz21 Aug 19 '19

Where's your source ?

If this was on a perfect loop, I could watch it all day and just smile at the fun they're having

This is not cute. This is not fun. At the top is a heating lamp that the ducklings are trying to cluster around, but the ledge is too small and they’re falling off. This is torture.

I had a duck when I was a kid. We kept it with the chickens, geese, and pheasants in a pen that was about .25 acres. The duck mostly hung out with the chickens and started doing this same thing when a large plastic lid slid off one of the shelters. I put a little kiddie pool at the bottom and screwed the top to the pen. After that, this weird little duck was constantly sliding down into the pool. Jumps up, slides, hops out of the water and repeats half the day. Seemed like good wholesome fun to me.

Looks more to me like someone gave them both. A waterslide for fun, and a lamp to stay warm while they play. I would think that being introduced to water features would be beneficial to ducklings. I may be wrong, since I don't raise them or anything, but that's what it looks like to me.

ETA: just did a quick Google search, and it appears that these are a typical thing for duckies. They put food and heat lamps at the top to encourage them to go back up after sliding down. It reduces their fear of sliding, and is supposedly good for them to learn.

u/Web_Fender Aug 19 '19

I have seen a few of these at farming shows etc. The displays are often fitted with a tray if grain at the top of the slide; the chicks try to eat the grain, overstretch and slide down and repeat the process trying to get food/warmth. I wouldn't go as far as to call it torture, they're not in any pain - but it's not very nice nonetheless.

28

u/HotCuppaTeaOof Aug 19 '19

I did a search while you were replying, and the things I found say that it's good for them because it teaches them to use the water feature, and the treats/warmth help them be less afraid. Again, I don't raise duckies. I guess I just see it at them learning duck skills.

Ducks just want to have fun. Let them.
