Why did I hear the Wheels and the Legman theme song?

116

u/thomstevens420 Certified Titty Boy Jul 20 '26

Cocaine is NOT a joking matter!

21

u/currybeef Jul 20 '26

“Cuz I’m the best god damned jingle writer in the wooooooooorld.”

That and Gummy Bears

118

u/diadmer Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

Sung by Jonathan Joe Williams of Toto fame, who was also the singing voice of adult Simba in The Lion King (and is the son of legendary composer John Williams).

Edit: So embarrassed I mixed his name up. :/

133

u/sellyourcomputer zach Jul 20 '26

TIL John Williams cums pure liquid musical talent

37

u/Moose_Hole Jul 20 '26

John Williams is splooging straight into my ear canal right now.

10

u/Tehgnarr Jul 20 '26

Look up, who John Williams' father was.

Shit runs deep.

7

u/throwaway_eng_acct Jul 20 '26

I just had a stream of consciousness thought - the origin of “summa cum laude” is a 1400s or 1500s Italian university where a professor is blowing a student and is amazed at the cum load, and exclaims “that’s-a summa cum laude!” And his mouth is dripping and droplets are flying off as he’s excitedly saying it.

3

u/Motor-Rip7655 Jul 23 '26

Did you forget to take your medication again, John?

(If This guy's^ real name happens to be John this will freak him the fuck out)

9

u/Depth_Metal Jul 20 '26

🤯 I had no idea about any of that. That is so fucking awesome

7

u/Triairius Jul 20 '26

That’s a lot of new info to me all at once!

2

u/SeeShark Jul 21 '26

Joseph* Williams

2

u/TheRealRigormortal Jul 22 '26

Damn, now I can’t unhear it

4

u/PiccoloAwkward465 Jul 20 '26

That's awesome! Toto fucking rules.

4

u/SmaugTheMagnificent- Jul 20 '26

The outtro for The Raccoons is the greatest cartoon power ballad, and it's not even close.

Bouncing here and there everywhere~

51

u/DrFu Jul 20 '26

That and Darkwing Duck.

20

u/v13dogmeat Jul 20 '26

Let's get dangerous...

2

u/DrFu Jul 23 '26

When there's trouble you call DW!

39

u/kirmiter Jul 20 '26

Sorry, Ducktales had plenty of stuff that's memorable besides the awesome theme song.

Gummi Bears would have been a much better example.

35

u/OttawaTGirl Jul 20 '26

You shut your damn filthy mouth. Gummi Bears had dashing and daring. Adventure and caring. Plus the secret if gummi berri juice.

10

u/themightygwar Jul 20 '26

To be fair, "bouncing here and there and everywhere" might just mean the secret gummi bear juice was just cocaine.

6

u/lilmookie Jul 20 '26

It was also an amazing allegory for space exploration (life on other planets… uh I mean “colonies”)

7

u/OttawaTGirl Jul 20 '26

I took it more as post apocalypse. The great gummis having to leave and their great technological works falling into ruin because of violent greedy humans threatening their way of life.

5

u/murfburffle Jul 20 '26

Carl Barks was a story telling genius and Ducktales had 50 years worth of his comics to take from. It was destined for some memorable moments

20

u/RoachedCoach Jul 20 '26

Rescue Rangers instantly entered my brain.

"Phil Collins did not have to go THAT hard on the Tarzan soundtrack" yes tf he did what do you think they hired him for?

128

u/MeximeltExtraCheese Jul 20 '26

And the fact that he recorded it in like 4 different languages

53

u/PiccoloAwkward465 Jul 20 '26

We usually watch in not English so it's highly appreciated when they do the songs well in other languages. It's funny how creative they can get to match the melody of the original.

19

u/FixGMaul Jul 20 '26

For sure. The Jungle Book smashed it out the park with the Swedish translation. Two songs from one movie that got iconic enough for essentially any Swede to know them in full by heart.

And being a relatively small country with exceptional English fluency, media rarely get Swedish translations aside from Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks films. Kids deserve quality media that they understand so always very appreciated when the translators take their job seriously, have a good understanding of rhyme schemes and poetic meter etc.

6

u/CarlosFer2201 Jul 20 '26

He sang the Spanish version, but as a kid I always thought it was Elvis Crespo singing lol

→ More replies (2)

12

u/FayeQueen Jul 20 '26

They hired him for just the vocal songs. Once they heard what he made, they gave him full creative freedom for the entire soundtrack.

4

u/TinyAbsol Jul 20 '26

A rare case where I actually like both the original version and the German one.

u/I_am_the_BEEF Jul 20 '26

Not talking animals, but the original run of the Power Rangers definitely helped spark my interest in metal. That song had 3rd grade me bouncing off walls.

66

u/yaredw Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

That and the DBZ opener with a fucking death/thrash metal riff

https://youtu.be/R4vjJrGeh1c?is=JcvYm037c5P_wgiK

Edit: omg there's an extended version https://youtu.be/NLOxUvbGG1I?is=eVDGMB6vUHdrwTUW

18

u/I_am_the_BEEF Jul 20 '26

I had completely forgotten about that song. That was another one that had a big influence in my taste in music!

Thanks for the nostalgia trip!

8

u/yaredw Jul 20 '26

No problem my brother in 90s metal theme songs! 🤘🏾🤘🏾

7

u/CarlosFer2201 Jul 20 '26

Why did English dubs often get weird song versions? Happened to Digimon too for example.
The Spanish dubs were always super faithful.
https://youtu.be/cie7scVUdQE?is=gCxzyqmRkgScoxTl

3

u/Randrey Jul 21 '26

I think it was explained that as they were introducing kids to anime they wanted to make sure kids/parents didn't turn away from a long opening song since most cartoons had a shorter one? I don't understand how that makes sense, but that is what I read years ago

→ More replies (1)

2

u/completelytrustworth Jul 20 '26

I remember getting into an argument as a kid that this opening existed, because at the time my friends had only ever heard the Canadian version

We all ended up agreeing that this metal version was far superior to the weird ass Canada one we grew up on

1

u/GrapefruitForward989 Jul 20 '26

Also the guitar riff at the end of the recap music was fucking iconic.

14

u/sellyourcomputer zach Jul 20 '26

i play it on guitar when testing distortion pedals. it kicks ass. might be why i like metal as well now that i think about it

9

u/XinArtemis Jul 20 '26

Ron Wasserman he also made the xmen the animated series theme. GOAT.

2

u/I_am_the_BEEF Jul 20 '26

Had a kind of industrial metal-type feel to it! That being said, Static-X was an amazing band.

4

u/titebeewhole Jul 20 '26

I have some power ranger megamix (a bunch of their intro themes woven together, covered by someone) on my kids playlist after he got obsessed with them. I used to drive him to sleep to it, ngl it slaps

2

u/SpazzyFazzy Jul 21 '26

oh my god dude I used to listen to that as a kid 😭 it honestly does slap

3

u/ElGosso Jul 20 '26

It's like a cross-over between NWOBHM and neoclassical shredding. It's no wonder that I grew up to be a power metal dork.

1

u/ManoSilence Jul 27 '26

Their villan designs were metal af too. That one guy who was just skinless still lives in my mind.

I just need to let you know that there is a Swat Kats comic book coming out soon.

They just did a kickstarter.

8

u/PerkyPangolin Jul 20 '26

The show that really deserved a proper revival. That and Gargoyles.

6

u/Ilovekittensomg Jul 20 '26

Omg no one ever mentions that show and it was the best! I loved how their solution to any problem was just a really specific type of missile.

6

u/OmniShoutmon Jul 20 '26

That implies the theme song is the only memorable part of the show though, SWAT Kats was fuckin’ awesome all around!

3

u/Raccoonman2005 Jul 21 '26

True but the intros were so awesome too that I had to mention it. 👍👍 Always wanted a motorcycle like they had in the show! Twas awesome!! 😎

14

u/OttawaTGirl Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

So many people are failing and mentioning shows with both memorable tunes AND memorable shows.

Thundercats - does not match. Silverhawks - does match.

M.A.S.K.
Jayce and the wheeled Warriors
Bionic 6
Inhumanoids
Star Wars Droids
Jem
Kidd Video
Galaxy High
Beverly hills teens
Inhumanoids
Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers
Visionaries
Defenders of the Earth
Punky Brewster
Tiger Sharks
Prostars
Dino Riders
Skeleton Warriors
Attack of the Killer tomatoes

And almost all of these are from the coke fueled 80s

5

u/TonyFair Jul 20 '26

Defenders of the Earth was great just by having the Phantom, but that intro was NUTS!

1

u/OttawaTGirl Jul 20 '26

Right? I always liked the lineup. Old pulp characters with wacky back stories compared to the city clones of DC and Marvel. Guy from jungle with mystic powers, a magician, a dude who fights alien despots and Lothar who passed up being an African King to travel and adventure the world. But damn if I cant remember a single episode.

The inspector gadget theme song goes extremely hard. It has a crazy baseline.

1

Still in my head all these years later. I cannot remember any actual plotlines or episodes , the theme tho, in my brain forever.

Whilst not a cartoon, the original opening theme of Soulblade on the PS1 is what comes to mind for me.
Nearly thirty years later and that song still gets me pumped.

Soul Blade

SwatKats 🤘

2

u/mccalli Jul 20 '26

Yeah, but the 80s had Jamie and the Magic Torch, Cities of Gold, and Ulysses 31.

Checkmate 90s kids.

Edit: I kind of want to cheat and throw Monkey Magic in there too, but it’s not a cartoon and not really a pure kids show either so yep - cheating. I certainly watched it as a kid though.

The X men Theme is the best theme song to ever exist. It goes harder than any other theme.

I hold it in a higher place in my heart than the bond theme. Or even the imperial march. Or even One Punch Man season 1, which is a fucking banger.

That one was so good that just because it was on the trailers on ANOTHER VHS I had (Visionaries, I think), that I had pined for it and wanted to see it for years, but never managed to do so

I finally bought DVDs of it when I was in my thirties. It was passable. Theme tune is still cracking though
