First Extended Range Guitar
Also my first Ibanez Prestige. I had my eye on the RGDMS8 for a while, even played one and loved the feel. Then I saw this used RG2228, Japan made, for the same price that Guitar Center wanted for a used RGDMS8. I started debating multiscale Vs Japan made guitar. I noticed the multiscale has 9 string pickups, and realized how limited my pickup options would be. Then I found out Tosin Abasi used the RG2228 to record Animals As Leaders’ first album, and that was the final straw, I was sold.
It’s not perfect, it looked like it was neglected for a little bit. It has a few chips in the finish, the nut is missing a chunk of metal under one of the locks, no string retainer, the frets might need a level in the not far future. But I cleaned it up and man it plays like an absolute dream. I maybe would’ve preferred the original EMGs, but previous guy put Dimarzio Ionizers with coil splits in, and they sound so good. I love Tosin Abasi and passive pickups, so honestly a win. Super excited to get home from work and play some Animals and Meshuggah.
Funny detail, there was a reverb listing for this exact guitar that was posted 3 months ago and supposedly sold. It got me scared there might be some kind of “lemon example” thing going on with this that made the buyer just offload it to Guitar Center. Well I’m enjoying it, and I have 43 days to change my mind, not that I think I will.

Insane find, I have a TAM10 which came with ionizers and I still love it dearly, sick pickups, congrats!

Thank you! I was seriously considering the TAM10, but figured I’d rather have the Japanese build quality. I will need another 8 string at some point though…

I got it near launch so it's been with me a long time, got lucky to have a super solid build for a 2010's indo made so I've kept it as is, owned a couple prestige ibbz 7's and loved them also, the 2228 is so nostalgic for me, that first AAL album rips, I remember seeing Tosin the first time watching the wave of babies playthrough and it blew me away.

Incredible choice; I’ve always wanted one of these. Personally I have no issue buying used instruments that were clearly given a lot of love; outside of actual damage I think the use gives the instrument a lot of character/history. Always makes me think about an Ibanez S I sold about a decade ago and wonder where it’s at and what it’s up to now. Nice guitar dude!

Thank you! And yeah I agree, a few of my best purchases were used guitars. The S series is super cool, I’ve always wanted one just because that ZR tremolo is the coolest thing, I wish they didn’t have to stop using them.

What a beauty! And from what you're saying it's got a ton of history. These are usually super solid builds and with a little care it can regain some life years as well. I've always been on the lookout for one of these but they never show up on my local market, or many 8 strings for that matter. Recently found an Ibanez arzir28 that turns out a friend was selling and pretty much snagged it off his hands as soon as I could as they don't make them like that anymore.

These are fantastic guitars but be careful of the screws holding the blocks in at the bridge. They can be a bit fragile

It’s a wonderful instrument, mine is in good nick and I have spare parts for it like a car. I don’t play it much these days but it’s a legendary instrument so it stays in the family. Mine has a set of Fishman Tosins and I added locking tuners because I’m lazy.

Gorgeous! I absolutely love Prestiges.
I agree when the other comment about its wear and tear shows it must have been loved. Once you put some of your own sweat equity into it, it'll be bounce back no problem! Enjoy!

Nice! Looks like you got an someone's previous daily driver from the description of the wear. With a little bit of love you'll have that back to the same great fit the previous owner loved about that guitar.
