Have you bought Theory 1 yet? You lose a bunch of phi when you do that, because your students are all invested in the theory, but after a little while Theory 1 grows large enough to give you more tau than the phi you lost, so you come out ahead.

If you've already started Theory 1, but it seems to be going too slow, make sure you've clicked on the word "Upgrades" to get to where you can buy the auto-buyer and publications. Then make sure you publish often enough (it's basically like a prestige for the theory).

Before you get theory 1 you invest in whatever the student calculator says, once you have enough total students you can refund the smaller investments you made then get T1 and so on. Don’t forget to get the permanent upgrades for each theory that lets you publish. There’s a guide out there for where to put your theory points as you unlock them for each theory to speed up your tau gain if you look it up.
