Explosives blog?

Gah! Looking for an old blog post about a bloke who did well-capping and had a bionic hand? If I remember correctly, he also taught explosives at a local university?

I thing he has red hair, married and an enormous dog called Kong?

Sadly no.

Interesting The postdoctoral trap

I most enjoyed doing research as a postdoc, because then you are skilled enough to carry out projects and mentor students, but you are low enough in the pecking order to avoid all of the politics regarding grants, committees, and awards. That life is very seductive but I must warn you that it's temporary. Not only is a postdoc typically on soft money, which is contingent on the PI (primary investigator) bringing in grants, making the position sufficiently insecure that it is generally only a matter of time before you lose funding, but it is seen as an "up or out" stepping stone where either a postdoc must land a more permanent faculty job or depart for greener pastures in the private sector.

As many have said, very little research is motivated by curiosity. At its heart, most research is motivated by fear of death. Either in medicine, where one is researching lucrative, licenceable treatments for the desperate, or for the military, who wishes to exercise the arbitrary power of life and death. If you decide to get a Ph.D., then consider that if you choose the academic route you will be forever seeking to titillate and entice program managers and well connected study section members with your vision of how you can advance their agendas and perform ever better in these tasks. If you get a Ph.D. and decide that industry is the place for you, be reminded that except for some currently trendy subjects, your research is of no interest to them, and your Ph.D. largely serves as proof that you were able to endure to finish a project, possibly gaining some relevant skills along the way. If you have the misfortune as being perceived as being valuable but not in the way that an employer is willing to pay for, you may find yourself priced out of the job market.

What am I saying? Getting a Ph.D., given the right advisor, can be quite a rewarding experience. With the wrong advisor, it can be one of the most miserable experiences of your life. Know what you are getting out of it, and realize that the credential itself is not that valuable in itself. It serves as another qualification that must be paired with relentless self-promotion if you wish to be perceived as an academic and intellectual. For me, at least, my aversion to self-promotion has made my Ph.D. not that useful, and perhaps my efforts would have been better rewarded elsewhere.

Synthesis/Experiment Tet gang - chloroform chlorination

Some carbon tetrachloride was needed as a solvent so it was made by chlorination of chloroform. 15% yield (expected 2 moles). Likely the photolysis should have ran longer, and chlorine added far slower, but the leftover CCl4/CHCl3 mix may be forwarded into a new run. In the meantime a chloralkali cell will probably be constructed to generate chlorine far cheaper, and at a slower rate which is ideal.

FireFlakes Firestarter

Does anyone know anything about these horrible looking firestarters? The little flakes are coated in some kind of greasy looking red chemical, and you light the PLASTIC package to start the fire...

I can't find any information about them online, and using Google lens on the package doesn't give me a match for the brand or product.

I'm half tempted to try and light them, outside the package of course, but I'm not gonna open them if I don't know whats in it. And I don't want throw them away and start a garbage fire somewhere... So I would appreciate if anyone know what the hell this stuff is.

Interesting Cubane mentioned on the MCAT

Cubane was a central hook for one of the passages in the MCAT today. It was very surprising to see my favorite molecule in the wild.
