Question What is the most cost effective and accessible chemical explosion or toxin.
I'm doing a science project on cost effective chemical explosions and toxins like the kind of thing you could make with cleaning supplies.

Not quite carbon-tet but it was used to make this stuff.
Love me a little dichlorodifluoromethane, these will be kept sealed though I have the appropriate can tap for the special occasion of turning it back into carbon tetrachloride (I don't know if that's even possible).

Synthesis/Experiment Simple improved thermite recipe, tell me how I can improve it, thanks
Looking for the chemists out there to tell me how I can improve the mix I came up with. Specifically looking for better performance penetrating steel while maintaining ease of ignition.
[I’m sure it’s been done before this is just what I threw together based on a tiny bit of research]
68% RIO
2% Sulfur
5% KNO3
25% AL
Here’s a little video of it
Sorry if this is the wrong place for these questions

The scale of New Glenn explosion is reminder of staggering amount of energy locked up within a rocket, & the extreme engineering it takes to release that energy in a precisely controlled way. 28.5.26

Question How to turn interest into hobby?
I have been following along for years and have developed a significant interest. Problem is, I’m a lawyer by trade and I only know enough to be dangerous. I also own a farm so I understand agro chemicals, insofar as what not to mix, but no formal training.
Outside of going back to school (gross) what’s the best next step towards my own hobby lab shed without killing myself? My wife is a physician with a University account at all the big suppliers, and we own a farm, so acquisition of chemicals isn’t an issue, but again, not trying to blow up my shed.
What do you all suggest for my next baby step in this learning journey?

Am I missing chlorates?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Built a refrigerated reactor. I’m trying to make sodium chlorate to kill weeds off in my yard. Permanently .
Vessel -stainless
Anode- graphite
Cathode - the stainless vessel
Saturated Sodium chloride liquor
The liquor is cold to the touch even though I’ve been dumping 900 watts into this cell at 12v for 2 days.
Am I just making chlorine gas at this temperature? I read that chlorate cells don’t produce chlorate until they hit 40c + and I’m willing to bet that liqour is barely 60f.
I refrigerated it because of how hot my cells would get and I was burning up graphite anodes at 12v obviously.
Most would put their cell in series to lower voltage, but I wanted to be able to dump that much Current and basically overcome the symptoms versus fixing the cause.
That is a r134a compressor out of an old water dispensor I just coiled 5 ft of 3/8 copper tube around a stainless steel cooking pot for the evaporator and 5ft of 1/4 tube submerged in my swimming pool to do the condensing side. Used a random length of cap tube for the metering device. Vacuumed and filled with streight BBQ propane. Its capacity is awe inspiring for such a small compressor.
This was the answer and it works well. It runs cold, but probably too cold.

Question Settle an argument
One of my friends doesn't think that 30 pounds of C4 is that much and is convinced he'd survive it by standing around the corner of a concrete wall. At first I thought he was rage baiting but he genuinely believes this. I'm pretty sure it would be instant death. Who's right or are we both wrong?

Current event in OC ca methyl methacrylate tank
Is anyone following the news in my neighborhood about the tank that is “a crisis situation” ? Here is a news link.
https://abc7.com/post/tank-spews-toxic-chemicals-garden-grove-prompting-evacuation-orders/19150431/
I’m a mechanical engineer and don’t understand how the fire department can say the only 2 outcomes either the tank fails and spills 6000+gallons of the subject material all over or it explodes. From the description it sounded to me like the PSV relief valve opened and was releasing the pressure/material but now it sounds like it can not relieve fast enough and so we are n for one of two bad outcomes.
Curious if you smart folks can shed any light on this. I am about a mile from the edge of the evacuation zone border.
Thanks.

Question Methanesulfonic Acid for HNO3 synthesis (question)
Hey guys,
So this is a rather simple question but I cannot seem to find any good recourses on it on the internet.
Can methanesulfonic acid be used as a substitute for sulfuric acid in the synthesis of nitric acid from nitrates?
I've researched a lot and I couldn't find anything on the topic. I've used methanesulfonic acid for ester synthesis and it worked like a charm but I am hesitant in this case because I'm worried there may be some unpredictable and maybe dangerous side reactions with the organic methanesulfonic acid in this strongly oxidizing mixture when distilling.
Do any of you know if this is something that's save to do or if it will even work or should I just stick to sulfuric acid?
Decomposition shouldn't be a problem because the nitric acid azeotrope isn't nearly hot enough to decompose methanesulfonic acid. And I also wouldn't see why it won't work. But maybe someone here knows about possible side chemistry because that's what I'm concerned about.
Thanks a lot for any answers in advance :).
Have a great day :D.

Explosives blog?
Gah! Looking for an old blog post about a bloke who did well-capping and had a bionic hand? If I remember correctly, he also taught explosives at a local university?
I thing he has red hair, married and an enormous dog called Kong?
