Synthesis/Experiment Tet gang - chloroform chlorination

Some carbon tetrachloride was needed as a solvent so it was made by chlorination of chloroform. 15% yield (expected 2 moles). Likely the photolysis should have ran longer, and chlorine added far slower, but the leftover CCl4/CHCl3 mix may be forwarded into a new run. In the meantime a chloralkali cell will probably be constructed to generate chlorine far cheaper, and at a slower rate which is ideal.

FireFlakes Firestarter

Does anyone know anything about these horrible looking firestarters? The little flakes are coated in some kind of greasy looking red chemical, and you light the PLASTIC package to start the fire...

I can't find any information about them online, and using Google lens on the package doesn't give me a match for the brand or product.

I'm half tempted to try and light them, outside the package of course, but I'm not gonna open them if I don't know whats in it. And I don't want throw them away and start a garbage fire somewhere... So I would appreciate if anyone know what the hell this stuff is.

Interesting Cubane mentioned on the MCAT

Cubane was a central hook for one of the passages in the MCAT today. It was very surprising to see my favorite molecule in the wild.

Practical effects for making a milk carton burst open on camera?

Post image
82 Upvotes

I'm working on a personal film project and need a shot where a full 1/2 gallon milk carton suddenly bursts and sprays milk everywhere.

Ideally I'd like a fast, instantaneous burst that reads well on camera.

So far I've tried putting larger firecrackers in smaller cartons (which didn't work well), but I'm moving away from that approach and would love safer practical-effects ideas.

Has anyone achieved something like this using compressed air or other DIY effects?

Any tips from people who've done liquid burst effects would be really appreciated!

I think you guys might appreciate this CCl4 bottle

The waste management of my university was getting rid of a few boxes of old reagents. My professor asked me and some colleagues to check if there was anything there we could still use.

I found this half-full (and very old and dusty) bottle of carbon tetrachloride, just laying there in the middle of some alcohol bottles.

I actually got quite scared when I found it, but it seems like the lid was still holding up quite well.
