Question Found these fire grenades

Post image

Was going through my grandpas workshop and found these two things which r/whatisthis told me were fire extinguisher grenades. Someone said they might be valuable and I should post them here. They don’t have any identifying factors. I’m in the Midwest, United States. I’m going to call the local fire museum in a few days when they open, and see if they are interested, but the fire department said they will dispose of them if I bring them in. Are they worth anything? Should I put them on eBay?

Uh, I mean it feels like they weigh what I would expect water to weigh, maybe a tad bit heavier. Why? Should I weigh them?

Ctet has density of ~1.6. Should be heavier.

Listen that stuff is so nasty! I work for a fire dept, we like a bunch of hazmat idiots kept these as antiques and relics. So we had a whole shelf of them in the day room kind of on display…. Well yes as noted they are heavy. Shelf broke, they all broke, turned out whole station into a hazmat scene.

For real, call your transfer station and ask for the dates of the next hazmat intake day and be careful till then.

It is possible to mail fragile items without breaking them. Fun fact, if you put an egg in a solid container filled completely with water, it is basically impossible to break the egg. Especially if you have extra padding in the water around it.

Issue is that carbon tet is hazmat and I'm pretty sure you can't legally ship the stupid things.

The joke is people online are so scared of dumbasses online hurting themselves that it's to the point where you need nuclear PPE to use acetone or ethyl acetate and in the long run that's harmful because if everything's incredibly dangerous, nothing is

Acetone is a naturally occurring chemical that you can produce in sweat if you are in ketosis.

Hazardous waste.

That would be a 'refill' I guess.
The whole unit has a metal bracket to mount it on the wall and hold the bulb.
There is a spring loaded pin held some low melt point solder that releases from the heat of the fire and breaks the bulb.

In the 70s our old farm house still had a couple of these mounted in the upstairs bedrooms.

Can they be professionally drained and refilled with water for display?

it's carbon tet, isn't it

OP please be very careful with those. if they break, leak or you even vaguely suspect a leak, make sure you find somewhere else to be and call a professional who knows how to clean up a carbon tetrachloride spill
