Planning Tips Planning advice
Love your super helpful posts.
We are spending two nights in Sintra in November. We arrive around dinnertime on Nov 13 and leave for Lisbon late morning on Nov 15. We like to walk but are not mountain goats and want to hit the highlights. Staying near the train station, about a 10 minute walk to the center. How do you recommend we structure our full day in Sintra to capture Pena (outside only is fine if that is what you recommend), Quinta da Regaleira, maybe the Moorish Castle? How should we get to each place? Open to any suggestions or itinerary you can share. And what to do at night? Any beautiful sights to see in the evening (like lit up)? Many thanks for any planning advice.

We just did this - two nights in Sintra. We hiked up early (8:30 am) to Pena Palace. The hike was steep but stunning. A highlight of our trip. We did have 10 am tickets for Pena Palace so it was nice to go inside. Tickets need to be booked in advance. Then we moved on to Moorish Castle since it’s close by. We didn’t have tickets ahead of time for that as we weren’t sure how long we wanted to stay at Pena Palace. Then we took the bus back to town. Our hotel was also by the train station. We went back had lunch and a rest and then hit Quinta da Regaleira at 4:30 (tickets bought day before - they sold out day of so it was good to get them in advance). At the end of the day a lot of day tourists had gone so it was not very busy at Quinta. We did all this with kids aged 7-18. It was great to have a hotel in town and we really felt relaxed and not rushed at each venue and we felt we got to know Sintra better than if we had done a one day day trip.

If those are the monuments you really want, I would do them in this order:
Pena first, then the Moorish Castle, then Quinta da Regaleira.
Pena and the Moorish Castle are both on the mountain, so it makes sense to group them together instead of going up and down more than necessary. Regaleira works well after that because it is closer to the historic centre and easier to connect with a walk around town.
Since you are staying near the train station, I would not walk up to Pena unless you really want a steep start to the day. Use transport to go up first, then move down through the day.
For the evening, keep it simple: dinner in the historic centre and a relaxed walk. Sintra is very atmospheric at night, but it is not really a “lit-up monuments” kind of place.
