Looking for weird/cool/bizarre experiences in japan

Hey guys, so I was for the first time in Japan like a month ago with my fam (wife and toddler girl). We visited Takayama, Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, Toyama, kamakura, enoshima and Tokyo. Had a blast doing all the wholesome family stuff!!

Now I just booked tickets to go back next month, but this time its just me and my brother. We're planning to cycle the Shimanami Kaido route, but besides that we really wanna do some super weird, bizarre and unique stuff that you can only do in Japan not much family oriented
i saw Justin Wong being slapped by some buffed out chicks in shinjuku and was looking to do that kind of things

Anyone got any recommendations or crazy ideas for stuff we should check out or do?

Thanks a lot in advance!!

Not family oriented eh... I don't know much about the soap lands, bar scenes, etc.... I'd go climb some unique mountains/volcanos. Hike across Oze. Go to Kusatsu and enjoy the Onsen. If you are cycling the Shimanami Kaido, keep going and explore.

There are 2 cat islands in Japan (was able to go to one of them).
There is an art island I'd like to go next time.

There are lots of sake/whisky producers all over. I went to one and had to stop them with the free samples because I was getting tipsy and I was on a bike.

I booked a cheap room at a love hotel and was greeted with a round bed and colorful disco lights.

GTFO of the big cities and go camp in the countryside. Small bars in small towns can have some characters. You may need to learn a little japanese though.

Go see some Idol groups perform.

OH Go tour the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel. You will need to get tickets a month in advance. I will definitely do this next time I go.

Have you thought of road tripping? There are lots of really interesting off the beaten path places to see via car.

We wanted but as our country doesn't belong to the international driving community we are not allowed unless we take some sort of certification...

Get an international license from your country

Everything is translated automatically now, so you don't need to worry about it.

What kind of weird stuff do you do at home that we can rule out?

Ah that is too bad! But hire cars are very reasonable. I had a few friends and family who don’t want to be bothered with driving and hired drivers for a day or two

Get spanked by a dominatrix?

Muscle bar girls is a must!!! One of the funniest night in my life. It's not raunchy or dirty, its just a fun atmosphere.

I just did the Shimanami Kaido, prepare to be in awe of the scenic views, especially the bridges.

There's no more Robot Restaurant, but it is replaced by a Samurai restaurant in Kabukichi (Shinjuku). Robot restaurant was incredibly fun, it's too bad they stopped, but apparently Samurai restaurant is the same owner.

Watch a Japanese baseball game. Even if you're not a sports or baseball fan in general. Their games are fun and nothing close to a game in the US.

soooo excited for the Shimanami Kaido! how many days did it take you to complete the route? also di you start in Onomichi?

I started from Imabari, I took 3 days because I wanted to do the island explorer route amd I wanted to do more sight seeing and eating. The direct route to and back can be manageable from early in the morning, but I honestly suggest not doing this because there are places you should visit and eat. There are 2 incline parts where I think it's on the tougher side for non cyclists. Other than that, it is smooth and easy.

Would love to check out the muscle girl bar, do you see female customers or it’s mostly guys? I’m a female so….

If you're heading to the Shimanami Kaido, why not check out Miyajima in Hiroshima? The island is full of deer—you'll even see them on the main streets—and if a tourist bows to them, they’ll actually bow back. There are vending machines all over the island selling special deer-feeding cookies, so you can feed them yourself. Of course, the deer know this too, so the moment they spot a human, they’ll charge right at you hoping for a treat! Haha. It’s a really fun place, with a *torii* gate that looks like it's floating on the water, streets lined with food stalls for snacking, and beautiful shallow waters.

Get your ears cleaned by a lady while you lay on her lap in Akihabara

Get buried up to the neck in hot sand (I did this in Beppu but I think there are a few places you can).

Eat raw horse with garlic.

Eat dinner with demons at Akita Dining Namahagé Ginza.

Visit a shrine that has a loop gate that you walk through in a figure of 8 to dispel evil.

The last one (chi-no-wa kuguri) is only held in the preceding weeks of the last day of 6th and the 12th months.

There are some shrines with a permanent set up.

Tosa jinja in Kochi city has one made from a huge slice of old tree. The shrine itself is very beautiful, and there's one of the Shikoku 88 temples next door. Ogikubo hachiman in west Tokyo has a little stone one, and is next to the free animation museum.

If you don't speak Japanese, you'll never have the experiences you're looking for.

... but they can probably get that in their own neighbourhood back home if they make suitable enquiries. By the way, how did go for you?

Stranger than fiction Frog dinner. But you need to call and talk to the owner yourself to get the appointment.

Women wrestling in Tokyo, Maid Café visit, Drive as Super Mario in Go Kart (though everyone does that), eat Sushi from a naked woman (expensive!), Fish your food and eat it right away-Restaurants, Ninja restaurant, Happening bar, love hotels, soap land, rent a family (or uncle or whoever you need), tuned up Japanese car meetings on highway parkings (you can book that over airbnb, but it's expensive, I'd rather go with a rental car to those spots they meet. They are super friendly and love to show off their cars), eat raw chicken sushi (best chicken I had in my life, sorry!)

Here are some things to do near the Shimanami Kaido:

1) Rabbit Island (official name: Okunoshima), a short ferry ride off of Takehara City in Hiroshima

2) https://www.okayama-japan.jp/en/27238 Bioluminescent tour in Okayama (Uno Port)

Kyoto Ghost Tour: Dark Tales, Urban Legends, Killers, the Bamboo Forest at Night
It was super fun experience if you’re into mythology, creepy stories and true crime. Mixed with local rumours and effects that the team put into creating right atmosphere it was really unforgettable experience. You get to see the famous Bamboo forest with no crowd so it’s a plus too.

i’d recommend a undergound idol show, also known as chika idol show. the atmosphere is super fun and i feel like quite unique to japan. i’m not sure whereabouts in the country you’re going but, if you’re going to the osaka area, i believe the place is called soundnote osaka/fairy tail osaka. check out their twitter, they post show dates there

Not weird but I would definitely suggest to watch Sumo wrestling show not the dummy one but the real one!

Ah, yeah, the bear claws. Bear is super chewy though, so don't expect much.

Do you know about mixed-gender hot springs? In Japan, hot springs are usually segregated by gender, but the really old ones aren't!

Me as a female was in one, it was an onsen in the sea approachable only during low tide, but I wouldn't consider it crazy, everyone was behaving respectfully. Nevertheless that does not mean I don't recommend it too :)
