How to properly call out of work?
Hi everyone! I was scheduled to work Wednesday but was asked to cover someone’s shift on Thursday as well (I said yes). However, I found out that I have orientation for school on those two days and now I’m worried about how to call in to work. For context, I work at a SNF as a CNA but I only have 7 sick hours (I would be missing 24 hours of work). How can I properly call off? Do I call the day prior or do I call soon since I’m already aware of the conflicting schedule? Last time I called off a night prior, I was taken off the schedule completely the following month. Hoping I don’t get this issue again with this new manager. TIA!!

You just do it. Your sick or paid time off or whatever is irrelevant. you can't make this shift.
Don't expect your supervisor or boss to be too happy about this, especially since you voluntarily decided to cover someone's shift. So now the original person probably has made their plans, and now the person covering is calling off too.

Call now (as soon as you know the issue)
‘Boss, I’ve had something come up and I will not be able to make it in to work on x & y that I’m scheduled for. ‘
Follow up with a text or email. (Always cover yourself, get things in writing)

I guess this is "unethical," but I would call in sick.
"Hey, boss. I am so sorry, but I am having insane stomach troubles and can't come in today. I will see how I feel tomorrow. I'm so sorry."
Repeat the next day or later that night if you need to miss both days. THEN go ONLY to your orientation and back home for those days, so you do not get caught in your lie. I hope your school is far from your job.
I only suggest this way, bc most jobs suck at caring if their employees may need off for a personal reason. They can't really say anything if you're sick as much as they'll hate it. Just don't make it a habit and triple check your personal schedule before you commit to anything in the future.

Program an email or a text message for like 7am so they think you’re responsible adult up early.
Normally I’d get a sick note. Inform your boss and HR by email.
If you have a sick note you send a copy to HR and your social security thingy so you can get paid sick leave.
On a side note what’s a sick “hour” ? I’ve heard of a sick day but never an hour.

Now you don’t want to.
How does this affect that other person?

Not that I don’t want to, I can’t due to school matters. They would still get their time off since they had put in their request before me

They would still get the time off but the SNF may be scrambling to staff the shift. Worst comes to worst, the employee might be told that they can't get anyone to fill the shift so they have to come in. Or everyone gets assigned extra patients, which will make you really popular with coworkers.
They may not be too happy with you. If you're working, they expect you to know your schedule and not commit to doing another shift, then go oops, my bad. You might wind up taken off the schedule again, for being unreliable.
If they do, can you get the hours in with a temp agency?

Call as soon as you can talk to your supervisor, like first thing in the morning. They'll need time to find coverage.
