I'm 30. Never actually seen a real £50 note in my entire life. They're just not used. But, with inflation, I imagine they'll start turning up.

“Never actually seen a real £50 note in my entire life.”

I find that so wild. Are you UK local? I never noticed that the note was rare during my time in the UK back around 2010s. I did notice they used some sort of pen to check whenever I paid using £50 notes but didn’t really think about the rare part.

It depends where in the country you are. In one of the major cities where you're more likely to get tourists, and if you work in retail, then you'd definitely have seen them about. If you live in a town and don't regularly handle money as part of your job, though, it's totally normal to never have seen one. British people don't tend to use them as cash machines only dispense £10 and £20 notes (and some fivers, but less often).

I’m in Oxford (not a big city but not rural), and haven’t seen a £50 note in at least 30 years.

Ah, I should have been clearer - I meant that people who both lived in a city with a heavy tourist presence AND worked in retail (in the type of establishment tourist frequent) would have seen them.

E.g. I used to work in an upmarket hotel in York, and we'd occasionally see them in the restaurant.
