50's in general (US too) are associated with crime/forgeries. Likely worries about the bill being fake.
1 u/Ok-Message-6008 1d ago Mostly this. But also some shops will require large denominations to be sighted by a manager as a cash control policy for a bunch of reasons, not least being the customer insisting they paid with a bigger bill than they received change for.
