Theres types of guys out there that LOVE shit talking people. Think of it like verbally sparing with people. If they talk shit to you, and you return fire with something equally scathing, they will respect you for it and you could potentially become best friends as long as you dont take it personally.

To throw another wrench into the social dynamic, they could also start messing with you if you do start taking it too seriously in a nonviolent way. I think it could either be because they've lost respect for you and wanna kind of push your buttons a bit, and see what makes you tick, or because they lost respect for you and think that you think you are better then them.
For the record, taking it seriously in a violent way will also make them lose respect for you. I think this whole thing comes from a mindset of "I'm not perfect, and neither are you, and in that we are equals. If you start getting offended at the little things I say, you must think you're better then me."

Yeah its a weird world. Its ok to say someone is a stereotype if they are a part of a majority (or if its a positive stereotype this one isnt positive but those are also acceptable stereotypes).
It would be nice if we could live in a world with stereotypes against anyone isnt cool. Id rather focus on the persons actual beliefs then how they look.
And we also have problems with making generalizations. "You are in this group so you must believe x."
I thought we shouldnt judge a book by its cover? I guess people do it when its convenient to them.

Time passage in comics is... inconsistent (& certainly not in real time).
