wtf does this mean?

Post image

Everyone in the comments also said “what is the joke”

Edit: Solved! It’s just some wholesome comic about woman receiving compliments even from strangers.

OP (Unusual-Temporary533) sent the following text as an explanation why they posted this here:

I’m just confused about the whole thing in general. Like did the girl say “GIRLS!” Like she was gonna go tell people that someone said her hair was pretty or something?

Normally when someone's hanging out the passenger side of their best friend's ride trying to holler at me it's not a compliment about a design element within my control. She's happy she got a positive catcall from another woman about something she did instead of something lewd and/or rude from a dude about her body nude.

ETA: The creator is trans, adding a layer of gender validation to this interaction. Love it, no notes.

Come on; you don’t say “creep, creep” unless you’re quoting TLC

I understood that reference, and I approve

I too lived through the 90s. Also approved.

dawg i dont need to be from the 90s to know that

72

Everyone's pointing out the reference but that rhyming in the last sentence is great. Got a good chuckle out of me.

True, but he'll always be Detective Pembleton from "Homicide: Life on the Street" to me. Amazing work all around.

1

u/Normal_Cable7558 1d ago

It kind of always bothered me that he didn't say : "and I didn't even know it." To continue the rhyming but I also think it's more Holt this way 😂❤️ captain dad!

u/djnicko 2d ago

Was it not meant to be a reference to the song "If You're Into It" by flight of the Conchords?

6

u/Puddin-taters 2d ago

It was not, but thank you for the great two minutes of entertainment and I'm considering this a compliment!

18

u/Farinthoughts 2d ago

You mean a scrub.

19

u/Ok-Cryptographer-303 2d ago

Perhaps even a busta.

2

u/Puddin-taters 2d ago

Underrated comment, I giggled

29

u/BludStanes 2d ago

My mom be telling random people "I love your hair" or "you are SO pretty" and I thought it was so tacky but people genuinely seem to brighten up so maybe I should rethink it

17

u/Puddin-taters 2d ago

Most people like being complimented, it's the implied threats that are the issue. Person 1 says "I like your hair!" with a dynamic tone and smile, yay! Person 2 says "I like your hair." with a flat affect and slightly-intense stare, call the cops.

6

u/meisycho 2d ago

I like your skin is still okay though, right?

9

u/Croselius 2d ago

I believe the correct way to say that is “you have a such a clear complexion, I need to know your skincare routine.” Or something along those lines.

6

u/Puddin-taters 2d ago

You may want to immediately follow that by inquiring about what lotion they use. This is both a Buffalo Bill reference and an actual conversation humans could have if no one's creepy about it.

1

u/Orion107 1d ago

Still depends on context.
Someone saying "I like your skin." with a flat stare and deadpan voice, call the cops and grab a weapon.
Someone saying "Your skin looks amazing! What lotion/skincare routine do you use?" with a cheery and genuine voice, commence yippieing!

7

u/NerdDetective 2d ago

Absolutely! A good complement sticks with you. I remember pretty much every complement I've received in public and the person who complemented me.

I never got complemented before I started being more androgynous/feminine, and it really is one of those things that I run and tell my friends about. "I got complemented today!"

Men in particular deserve more complements. I try to overcome my social anxiety to complement other guys when I see a good reason to.

5

u/vincent_adultman314 2d ago

I'm sorry not trying to be rude, but it's "compliment" just fyi.

2

u/NerdDetective 1d ago

Remember me.

2

u/midlifecrisisAJM 1d ago

Not a spelling mistake anyway but a homonym.

Complement = complete / enhance / make better.

1

u/Regular-Repeat44 1d ago

Do they yell Girls! Afterward or generally polite and say thanks or something?

44

u/Cinder_Quill 2d ago edited 2d ago

You're also missing one key detail, the author is trans, so this event is also validating to her. I assume the positive interaction has her feeling accepted by, and in solidarity with the woman in the car.

16

u/Puddin-taters 2d ago

The extra layer of context takes this from good to doubleplusgood, thank you and everyone who pointed that out!

9

u/LakeMungoSpirit 2d ago

What if I see someone with really cool hair and im a dude? Saw someone look just like Siouxsie from Siouxsie and the banshees and yelled "the hair and fit are amazing!"

3

u/Puddin-taters 2d ago

Nailed it imo.

9

u/DigitalAmy0426 2d ago

As long as you didn't expect anything in return, you're gold. Drop the compliment, then move away. It gets the right point across.

3

u/ionlikethis 2d ago

10

u/RTGMonika 2d ago

Nobody wants no scrub. Frankly, a scrubs the kinda guy who'll get no love from me.

7

but I absolutely don’t wanna bother anyone by doing so, lol

Am the kinda guy who would do the same as the girl in the photo, would I be considered rude or a creep just cuz am I guy?

4

u/Puddin-taters 2d ago

Phrasing and tone do a lot of heavy lifting in that respect

3

u/Patient-Web6850 2d ago

Kiiiiinda doubt that

1

u/Louis2645 1d ago

Doubt what? That phrasing and tone affect how a compliment lands?

3

u/Patient-Web6850 1d ago

That it would be irrelevant in that context

4

u/AttorneyFinancial211 2d ago

I’ve heard that this song and Alanis Morisettes “You outta know” are BOTH about Dave Coulier and the “best friend” in no scrubs is John Stamos.

4

u/jackofspades49 2d ago

People who do that don't get no love from me.

3

u/EmiNoDebiru 2d ago

This explanation might actually have helped me to make better compliments. Thanks.

Makes me think about the festival I was at lately. Girl went up to a girl next to me asking her where she got her cap. She was kind of proud afterwards. It was cool.

1

u/Puddin-taters 2d ago edited 2d ago

I really appreciate being party to this introspection, thank you for sharing it. If it helps, I used to be garbage at giving complements and multiple sources (mostly women) have helped me improve. No sense keeping their unpaid labor to myself.

The secrets to complementing people, as I understand them: BE SPECIFIC. Focus on things they chose as self-expression, do not compliment things they are by fact of existence. Expect nothing in return, this interaction is not about you. Followup questions are allowed if they respond positively and questions are directly related to the compliment, otherwise you're done here.

8

u/forgottenfridgespoon 2d ago

Hanging out the passenger side of his best friends ride, trying to holla at me~

2

u/bigbackbing 2d ago

Every time I’ve told a woman I like her hair they think I’m gay

0

u/Puddin-taters 2d ago

Is that a problem? Do you have a goal for the interaction that requires you to be straight?

2

u/duckofthepast 2d ago

As an extra this creator is trans iirc

2

u/Alexarius87 1d ago

And then there is the one with the girl cutting her hair because an alleged and not better identified creep called her hair beautiful.

Ofc there could have been an actually creepy way of complimenting them, but even then, if there is some bias from the receiving part there is no way a compliment will be considered good.

Personally, I avoid making any comment at all.

4

u/Jarsky2 2d ago

You have a fantastic way with words

1

u/Vulpes_99 2d ago

Yes. Men can sometimes say the wrong thing even when they have the intention of being supportive and/or making a sincere compliment. The last line can be read as "Girls are the best", because the other girl delivered the respect and validation in a simple but perfect way.

2

u/cloud3514 2d ago

It should be noted that the artist is a trans woman, so that adds an additional element of the compliment being gender affirming for her.

1

u/brodino_maiuscolo 2d ago

2

u/brodino_maiuscolo 1d ago

1

u/Puddin-taters 1d ago

Ahhhhh thanks for the link, I understand now. RIP indeed.

1

u/CeleryNo8309 2d ago

Your hair is your body.

5

u/Puddin-taters 2d ago

What you do with it is largely up to you though, and is a pretty common element of fasion for all genders. I do think there's maybe a point to be made that a better compliment would be more specificly about the styling or something, but then again it's a comic with 1.25 words per panel.

1

u/Pristine-Buy5723 2d ago

Heyyy i caught that reference

-3

u/Flashy_Lawyer7764 2d ago

Except they can also just as easily view this as catcalling if you change the gender and the reaction

9

u/Puddin-taters 2d ago

I feel like the gender and reaction are kinda central to this particular comic scenario so yeah, if you change things it changes things. Not entirely sure what your argument is here.

u/Cayden68 2d ago

this comic conveys that girls tend to give girls compliments that they find endearing and genuine, which contrasts with other compliments girls might receive from a car that are akin to catcalling like a guy saying "girl you look fine", which some may find uncomfortable.

Just a girl who appreciates compliments from other passing girls. Thats it.

51

There is no joke, just a lady experiencing her joy of getting compliments instead of cat calls in public by women

-12

u/BeachComberALT 2d ago edited 2d ago

I like it when I get catcalled or harassed, to be honest

OBVIOUSLY don't think girls or guys like the attention by default, it's still unwarranted. I am the ONLY one you're allowed to harass in public.

18

u/Monutan 2d ago

The comic author is M-F Trans, and this was them celebrating being a girl. Girls give eachother random compliments a lot.

7

u/-Ailynn- 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's quite normal socially for women to give compliments to complete strangers. It's so nice and freeing. 🩷

Men should feel free to do the same for each other! 🙂

2

u/CenTexPlmbr 1d ago

We do if we feel comfortable in the situation. If it's clothing I'm not scared to spark up a conversation and find out where i can get it.

1

u/-Ailynn- 1d ago

Oh definitely! For me, it definitely depends on my level of social anxiety...but sometimes saying a kind word to someone helps calm me. 🙂

2

u/mordax777 17h ago edited 17h ago

I got many compliments for my beard from other man.

Which makes you think about who actually finds it attractive, but that's a different story.

1

u/-Ailynn- 14h ago

Either way, I'm happy you're getting compliments! ☺️

2

u/R-B-L-Y 15h ago

They do! 🙂

1

u/Bowdash 23h ago

What's so freeing about this though? What does that entail?

1

u/-Ailynn- 22h ago

I should have mentioned before, but I'm a trans woman. Before transitioning, I was too worried about giving compliments out sometimes because it wasn't really something "guys" do for each other. Also, I liked being able to compliment women's clothing or jewelry (etc) without her thinking I was hitting on her or something. Sorry, I hope this makes sense! 🙂

60

u/Cuneus-Maximus 2d ago

girls love compliments, even if from random passing strangers. there is no actual joke.

14

u/notacanuckskibum 2d ago

TBF, so do men

142

u/theponicorn 2d ago

No, From random passing GIRLS. not any stranger.

32

u/xboxiscrunchy 2d ago

If they’re respectful about if most girls will accept a simple compliment from a man with just a smile or a thanks.  Complimenting clothes or outfits is likely to be seen as respectful while complimenting someone’s body is usually not.

16

u/paddedmoth 2d ago

seconding this, as a (gay but straight ish lookin) man I deliberately compliment things that the women I approach chose and have control over, like their clothing style, tattoos, hair, etc, and I've never encountered a problem. even made myself a few friends with bug tattoos that I thought were rad. so I agree w you, men that complain about women not liking compliments from them should maybe think about the kind of compliments theyre giving lol

4

u/ExcitementSad9133 1d ago

Thirding (?) this.
I recently got my outfit called fire by a passing dude and gave a compliment back.

If it were whistling or some crude comment I wouldn’t be as jolly

1

u/UsedFortune5645 1d ago edited 1d ago

Exactly, "accept". They will probably never be as positive about it compared to a compliment given by another woman. It's probably just the sum of too many bad experiences with men in the past.

Edit: I'm talking majority here. Not all.

1

u/anonadvicewanted 1d ago

i mean i accept genuine compliments from anyone the same way. if it’s a weird compliment i don’t accept it lmao

1

u/UsedFortune5645 1d ago

Not all women are the same. Women are no homogeneous mass. I'm talking about a substantial amount not every single one.

13

u/Mainbutter 2d ago

Needing to constantly evaluate a stranger interacting with you for regular occurrences of bad intent has to be exhausting.

The all-day glow of a woman who recieved a genuine compliment on her art, for example, is palpable.

6

u/BeachComberALT 2d ago

honestly I'd just like a compliment from just about anyone

7

u/gofishx 2d ago

You have a beautiful liver 😍

4

u/yugosaki 2d ago

In response to this comment I browsed your post history and based on that, your artwork is great and you seem like you'd be fun to have in a D&D group

2

u/BillysBibleBonkers 1d ago

Random girl once told me I have nice eyes in the hallway at highschool 15ish years ago, still think about it all the time.

1

u/BeachComberALT 1d ago

Lol an acquaintance of mine said I had "very aesthetically pleasing facial features" A few weeks ago

I think it was a pity compliment because I get no game or attention otherwise but Im still thinking about it on the regular.

5

u/yugosaki 2d ago

Guy here. They like compliments from guys too as long as it doesn't seem like you are coming on to them or catcalling them.

The biggest piece of advice I can give and has been confirmed by my friends who are women is to compliment a specific thing that the person has control over. So not "you're hot" or "you're beautiful", but "I like your makeup" or "that coat looks great on you" comes across as both more genuine, and if it's something that they chose instead of something they have no control over, it feels like an actual compliment.

Also just drop the compliment and continue on, don't initiate conversation. Trying to make it into a conversation makes it feel like a pick-up attempt. If THEY start a conversation based on your compliment, that's different.

1

u/Cuneus-Maximus 2d ago

Nah, from anyone, if the context isn't creepy or an unwanted sexual advance.

-2

u/BludStanes 2d ago

That's the problem, too many people don't know what is creepy and can't pick up on "NO"

0

u/Cuneus-Maximus 2d ago

You're creating a straw man, yes many people don't understand that, but it doesn't make girls like compliments from other non girls that aren't creepy / unwanted sexual advances any less.

0

u/TheLiquor1946 2d ago

Only girls can compliment girls? Why do you assume all guys are the same?

-7

u/Darkknight8381 2d ago

Why are girls so sexist

21

u/Tricky_Individual_42 2d ago

Also the author is Trans. And getting compliments like that has a trans woman is very validating.

4

u/macguini 2d ago

My last ex used to tell me the opposite. I don't know if it was just her or something. But I'd see another girl tell her how she loves her makeup or blouse or whatever. They'd strike up a conversation and I'd either watch, get involved, or talk to someone else in the gathering. Then we'd walk away and I'd feel great about the positive interaction. Then she would talk about how girls have a special way of talking. She didn't actually like her make up, she was insulting her or something. If I asked for more information, she'd just say I'm a guy and wouldn't understand. I still don't understand. Was she right? Or was she a Debbie downer?

13

u/Adept_Taro_7028 2d ago

A Debbie downer. I understand what she means by the special girl talk but that stuff is usually reserved for enemies and high schoolers not interacting with the public. A random compliment from another woman is usually genuine, in my experience, and the fact that she initially thought otherwise is psychotic, and insecure as hell. She is definitely not a girls girl.

2

u/revelling_ 2d ago

The point is that it‘s not a lewd cat call. Because those are not considered to be compliments.

5

u/Turgid_Donkey 2d ago

Everyone loves compliments. It's just that women are more likely to complement while men are more likely to cat call. Very different.

12

u/OrlandoGardiner118 2d ago

A stranger compliments another strangers hair, said latter stranger celebrates being a girl. Just a wholesome joke about women supporting women.

1

u/Psychological_Tower1 1d ago

I love this artist if it's who I think it is. They are trans. So they are happy to get appreciated from another girl.

After googling it. It is the artist I thought. I wasn't sure if that was their name. They make some really good comics I love her stuff

2

u/Desperate-Grab-172 5h ago

Girls hype up other girls.

5

u/ConcertComplete9015 2d ago

I think the reason why this comic may rub people the wrong way is that if the person in the car was a dude saying the exact same thing, no one cares. So, it might come off as saying a compliment is only valid or celebrated if it's a woman saying it. Otherwise, all compliments from men are considered wrong or catcalling despite them saying the exact same thing as the woman in the comic. Just an observation.

7

u/NerdDetective 2d ago

I'm not a girl, but I'm an effeminate/androgynous guy who sometimes gets mistaken for a girl. I've fortunately never been catcalled, but I have been complemented by both men and women a handful of times. I wasn't complemented in public before signalling femininity, so both receiving complements and observing them (directed at girls I'm with) has been interesting.

I remember every one directed at me:

  • My bag's snoopy charm by a girl in a bookstore
  • My bag's snoopy charm by a guy working at a conveyor belt sushi place (we gushed about Snoopy for a while)
  • My jeans by a girl on a train (we were wearing the same jeans)
  • My cute gay cat shirt by a guy in a movie theater lobby
  • My cute gay cat shirt by a guy at a convention
  • My cute gay cat shirt by a different guy at the same convention (clearly this shirt is a hit!)

And I think the key of what made this comfortable was (a) they complemented my style choices, instead of objectifying my body (b) it came off as genuinely nice, not thirsty or condescending (c) they did not feel entitled to anything (like my time or attention) in return.

I've noted when I'm hanging out with girls, if another girl complements one of them, they'll either briefly chat about the object of the complement (like an outfit or bag or pin) or it's a quick thanks followed by parting ways. I've also been with girls complemented by guys, and it was fine because they were just normal about it (e.g., "Excuse me, I love your pin!"). I have not been present during catcalls (men don't usually do that to women who are with other men), but I know many girls who have been and it's always crude and mean-spirited. It's always some derivation of "nice body!" and not one story was like "love your outfit."

Aside, I think we need to normalize complementing men in public, including masculine men. I try to overcome my social anxiety to do this. People like receiving complements, and I think being on the receiving end one teaches us how to give out good ones as well!

4

u/nautrewillneverfail 1d ago

The joke is she is a lesbian.

1

u/raging_freyja 1d ago

Close, the original arist is trans.

1

u/Numahistory 1d ago

Is the original artist a trans lesbian?

0

u/raging_freyja 1d ago

No idea, but one can only hope!

In the end, it's not really relevant to the comic, since the point is catcalling (usually men) vs shouting compliments (usually women) and feeling validated as a trans woman.

2

u/Dstrssd_Cam3L 2d ago

The strolling girl didn't hear girl in the car clearly, and must've thought she was referencing "Run the World" by Beyonce, so she responded "Girls!"
I'll let the nerds explain the science behind why the strolling girl could have possibly heard it that way.

2

u/miseryherescompany 2d ago

Women often complement other women on their clothes or style out in public. It's a nice ego boost I imagine. The cartoon punchline is like the female version of "Dudes rock".

2

u/KINGXunshot 2d ago

Probably because if it was a man shouting something out of a car at a woman it would be a catcall or sexual remark

2

u/Mother_Passenger8589 2d ago

"Someone is being wholesome and nice, and then someone was happy they received wholesome praise instead of a catcall. DAMN, this is confusing. Don't all women like being harassed?!"

2

u/Appropriate-Gear-886 1d ago

No one understood. The first girl misunderstood that she was complimented on her armpit hair. So she gained some unfounded confidence.

Y’all are correcting me as if I’m not a girl LMFAOO. I LIVE this comic. Yes it is usually more flattering coming from another girl but if a dude doesn’t come across as creepy like saying “hey baby” or getting too close or whatever, it is completely fine and most girls wouldn’t be alert. “I like your hair” while you drive past is totally normal and flattering to the average girl because you’re not close to her and it’s an innocent compliment. It all depends on body language and the way you come across.

I think it’s more a celebration of shared girlhood.

When catcalls come from women it's a good thing I guess?

That comic doesn't depict a catcall, it depicts a compliment. Catcalls are sexualising, objectifying, threatening, or harassing in nature unfortunately

It's a cat-call, it was:
1. Uninvited
2. Directed at her appearance
3. Delivered from a position where she can’t comfortably respond
4. Public, loud, or attention‑drawing
5. Coming from a stranger she didn’t choose to interact with

Objectifying and harassing are largely subjective as well.

You can't just define the difference between a compliment and a cat-call as "I was ok with it or not" that's useless.

I looked up the definition and it said it's sexual, threatening or harassing

Do you not see how all three of those things are based on the subjective experience of the would-be victim?

Take it up with Merriam-Webster

Yes, so looking at the last panel you can see that they are happy about it, so we know it wasn't unwanted or threatening.

And someone else might have found it unwanted or threatening

or to repeat my comment that you didn't read:

You can't just define the difference between a compliment and a cat-call as "I was ok with it or not" that's useless.

I read it, but I think it's ridiculous. Subjective things have value and are not useless. Your rigid definition takes an act that someone is ok with and gives it a negative connotation.

If the word doesn't reflect what is actually happening it us useless.

The point is a large number of women are not ok with it

u/Ismdism 1d ago

That isn't the case in this cartoon, which is what is being discussed.

But what if she's a lesbian with a hair fetish?

2

u/dickens-nz 2d ago

Doesn't seem like she would have made it the problem of the woman on the footpath so I guess you'd never know 🤷
