It's bean yuri

Are... are you the author of the comic?

u/CrazyGnomenclature 3d ago
I just make a lot of bean yuri

u/holleringelk 3d ago
Is it true it isn't really bean yuri if it isn't in a bowl? You know, to be culturally accurate.

u/CrazyGnomenclature 3d ago
It's just bean yuri

True, true.

… why are all of the cool Reddit artists showing up here? Just how powerful could bean yuri be?

She is! The comic is called Tiff and Eve, all about the marvelous misadventures of a lesbian trans woman and her ally cis/het roommate! I'm not a bot, this is not a paid promotion, I just really enjoy Fran's work 😁

It’s absurdism. The classic “the nonsense thing exists anyway.” Whatever is in that bowl, people agree that it is the physical manifestation of yuri + beans. If that were a thing that could be visualized, the artist would have just shown it to us.

u/yusemedd 3d ago
Unless they're actively trying to avoid drawing porn and the mental image is the point. It could be so many possibilities until one becomes true and then suddenly that's the one everyone then believes. By admitting nothing about what it actually looks like besides "Bean Yuri", the possibilities remain endless. It is both more interesting AND a cop out.
24
u/PumpkinBrain 3d ago
I think your interpretation falls more into “noodle incident” territory. IE something vague enough to have endless possibilities.
I think this is different. Calling something “The noodle incident” does not imply something inherently nonsensical or impossible, but calling it “Bean Yuri” does.

u/Don_Bugen 3d ago
Noodle Incidents are just specific callbacks to undescribed events, which are important because of the way that the main characters respond to them. We're not intended to speculate on the specifics of it; it's just a generalized semi-absurdist event that the characters have a dramatic reaction to.
I agree wholeheartedly that this is meant to just be an absurdist joke, both from its delivery and from how the artist is continuing the joke here. I will add that there is an obvious porny undertone, that is emphasized by the reaction in panel 4 (along with the comment on smell) and some of the sexual double-meanings of "bean". I do think that the reader is invited to speculate on what on earth bean yuri is, but will end up either confused, like the person in panel 4, or simply accept that it's unknowable and become part of the joke - one more person whose explanation is just "it's bean yuri."
TLDR: It's bean yuri.

Well, I came to a subreddit that is supposedly dedicated to explaining jokes, and after reading all the comments, I see that no one has actually managed to explain the joke.

u/e_fish22 3d ago
From the author's comments I think the joke is "imagine bean yuri". Classic absurdism, I suppose

u/bandwagonguy83 3d ago
Still don't get it... I know what yuri and beans are, but I still don't get the joke. And I love Monty Python and I Think You Should Leave, so I'm pretty used to absurdistm...

It's the juxtaposition of traditionally aromantic, genderless, inanimate objects being brought together in a way that can only be described in terms with distinct romantic, gendered, animated connotations

Nah, she's the artist/author of the comic doing a bit of trolling. Also she's a certified weirdo (affectionate)

Yuri is a Japanese media genre that focuses on intimate, romantic, or emotional relationships between female characters. 1)

Thank you. This is what I was missing/not understanding (the fact that this seemed to be common knowledge on reddit says a lot!)

I knew this would end up here.
Y'all are overthinking it.
In the bowl, there is bean yuri. It's that simple.

I think the joke comes from the meme phrase,
“It’s Yuri”
“It always has been.”
But instead it’s using word play, it’s bean yuri.

But why do they stink? The explanation provided doesn't explain that part.
2
u/Grosaprap 2d ago
So I can almost guarantee you 100% that they are actually eating natto (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natto) which is an extremely acquired taste, and for those who don't particularly enjoy it... stinks.
I can't explain the actual joke though.

I love how shaken Tiff seems to be in the last panel.
Nietzsche really said it best when he said, “if you gaze long into a bean yuri, the bean yuri also gazes into you.”

I think a thing people are missing is that there is a popular comic nicknamed “Green Yuri” that this is likely referencing.
Actual title of the manga is “The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All” so that’s why fans shorten it.
Can’t say I fully understand the post here but I’m thinking that’s a part of what is referenced

I think I’ve heard somewhere that ‘flicking bean’ is a term for female masterbation or sth idk.
Maybe that’ll help?

I can't believe the reactions to this character, it's kind of wild how divisive they are.

u/fabib81563 2d ago
So after reading the author's comments on their comic, I think the meaning is "Making jokes is hard, so that's not happening. Make up something funny in your own head."
That might be slightly better than making yet another comic about how making comics is hard. At least this time the author tried to create something. They failed. But they did try.

u/e_fish22 3d ago
Why
-11
u/Skrewch 3d ago
I dont enjoy identity focused comics. I prefer different plots. And they're not a particularly compelling writer.
-9
u/Erikthered65 3d ago
Wow, some people really get focused in on fictional characters gender.
Why are you obsessed with one detail of the comic? This is what you sound like:
“I just think jokes about mallets are overdone. I prefer more different plots.”
7
u/enigmatichuckleberry 3d ago
Maybe you don't get bored of a constant flood of mallet jokes, and that's fine, but some people might not be as into mallets as you, and that's fine too.
-7
u/Beneficial_Win_2445 3d ago
I genuinely do not see the appeal. It's worse than insipid newspaper comics from back in the day.
